Reading Excuses / July 19 - The Sword of Worlds CH 26 - Ellie
« on: July 20, 2010, 10:24:01 AM »
Recap:

Ellie has just traded the Sword of Worlds to Mordred in return for him healing Bloodbath. As soon as Mordred had the sword he ordered his Sigil Knights to kill Malik and bring him his head. Ellie rushed off to stop them. She fought briefly with the knights but they managed to grab and hold her. As they held her she pointed at Malik and used her ring which breaks magic.

Thanks for reading!

Brandon Sanderson / Re: The Paolini Takedown Challenge
« on: July 13, 2010, 12:28:07 AM »
I hate to be the one to say this guys, because I'm a HUGE Sanderson fan. The guys done tons to help me out with trying to get into writing and he's just awesome. He's my favorite writer currently alive and writing.

But I just don't think you guys understand how many books Paolini sells.

He'd sold 2.5 million copies of Eragon... BEFORE the movie came out. I have no idea how many he's sold now. Double? Triple? Ten times as many?

To put it into perspective The Gathering Storm started with a print run of 1 million. I don't know if its gone to a 2nd printing yet. I can't imagine that any of Brandon's other books have had that many copies printed. I doubt Way of Kings will have that many printed. I think Brandon once told us that the Wheel of time sold like over 1000% more than any other Tor series (Which I'm assuming included his).

I hope I'm not doing his a disservice by saying that, but I would think that all of his sales together do not equal even the sales of Eragon, to say nothing of Eldest and the other books in the series.

really? I haven't read them either (I want to save it) but that sounds like they're crucial right off the bat, right?

My understanding is that pretty much any battle in WoK's is decided by how many Shardknights each side has.

Its like if you are a normal army with two guys in Iron Man armor, you better hope that the other side doesn't have 3 guys in Iron Man armor. :D

Everything Else / Re: Vader vs Batman
« on: June 18, 2010, 07:53:11 PM »
A lot of this discussion depends on which version of Batman we are talking about. There's really only one version of Vader, there are dozens of versions of Batman. Vader would probably easily defeat the movie version of Batman (Hell he'd probably defeat the latest movie version of Superman).

I'm going with the Justice League or Justice League Unlimited cartoon version of Batman, which I think is pretty close to the comic version of Batman. I don't think that version of Batman would have much trouble with someone like Vader. Here's why:

-He's fought Lightsaber type weapons before. Whenever he has to fight someone with energy weapons like that, or if he's fighting someone that can't be taken down with human level strength, Batman puts on these energy gloves of his that deliver a powerful energy burst when he hits. They are also able to block and parry energy weapons (like a Lightsaber)

-Batman is really just going to dodge or block anything that Vader throws at him. He IS that good. Seriously, if its the Justice League Unlimited version of Batman, he's going to just walk all over Vader. In a contest of martial skills Batman always wins. ALWAYS. He fights people way more powerful than him all of the time, dodging everything they throw at him and taking them out with fancy tech.

Batman is just going to run up to Vader, dodge his lightsaber of block it with bat-gadgets then he's most likely going to stick an explosive to his back and blow the hell out of him, using just enough of a charge to incapacitate him without killing him.

AS for the Stormtroopers, Deathstar and all that other crap Chaos... fine. Vader can have his allies. As long as Batman gets his:

"Batman to Justice League..."

Going to see Laurell K Hamilton tomorrow while she's on tour for her new Anita Blake book: Bullet.

Any other Twgers read her stuff? I've read a few of the Merry Gentry books and just started the first of the Anita Blake series.

Writing Group / Re: Creative Ways to Kill a Character

Damn, I have to get in on this thread.

How about:

Toss your victim into a bathtub of lye (the chemical Ed Norton burned his hand with in Fight Club). I really can't think of a worse way to go then that.

Ok, maybe pouring honey on someone and leaving them tied up near an ant hill would be as bad.

I actually just got stung in the neck by a bee last night. So tossing someone in a locked room, then tossing in a bee hive would suck too I'm sure.

Lowering someone into a tank filled with flesh eating fish would be a good way too. Not Piranhas, something smaller that would take longer.

Feeding someone feet first into a wood chipper or plastic shredder isn't pretty. I still remember that scene from the movie Downtown.

I think one method of making a Witch confess was stacking rocks on them, slowly adding more rocks to the pile on top of the person over the course of several days.

Damn, I need help.

Star Wars and D20 just don't mix. Soooooo lame.

Luke: 18, I hit Vader for 1d10, plus 4 plus another 3 for my strength. (Rolls) 7, he takes 14 damage.
DM: You hit him with his lightsaber and he looks hurt, but still fighting. He swings at you, hits and does 32 damage.
Luke: Ow! Ok, I still have 55 hit points left. I use power attack!
