Movies and TV / X-Men: Last Stand *SPOILERS*
« on: May 26, 2006, 04:54:44 PM »
So I liked the film, but...SO MANY ethical and social issues left untouched.

I think it would have been a stronger film had they just focused on the mutant cure and taken out the whole Dark Phoenix story-line.

This would have given more time to with character development. I really would have liked to have seen more of Rogue’s storyline.

I liked all the characters (mostly), but there were so many that I wanted more time to understand each of them more.

Also, they completely have it set up for another sequel without any of the expensive stars.

Things I liked:
There was a Callisto/Storm fight, I would have been a little annoyed had they not done this. Although since when does Callisto have super-speed?

I liked Callisto, Arclight, Quills, and Psylocke. Could done with more of them.

No Jubilee.

I’ve decided that I hate Cyclops still, but James Marsden does a pretty good job playing him.

And before I forget, they did away with Cyclops, yay!!!

Too bad nobody stays dead for long the Marvel world.

Role-Playing Games / Anyone up for Gaming?
« on: April 23, 2006, 08:29:29 PM »
So I have most of this next week free to do what i want after I finish finals on Tuesday.

I've been dying to play some more Mutants and Masterminds, particularly 2nd ed. (For those of you not familiar with Mutants and Masterminds, it a D20 ogle Super-Heroes setting.)

So I was thinking if anyone in the Utah area was interested, I'd run a game this Saturday the 29th probably starting in the afternoon. I figure about 2 hours to build characters and 3 to 4 hours of play.

So anyone interested?

I'm giving Eagle Prince and Harbinger priority for participation, but I could still use couple more players. After this I start school again and won't have time to plan sessions as much.

Also I'm hoping to get  review for the site out of this.

Writing Group / Politics and Writing

So what do writers and editors think about political science fiction?

I recently watched an episode of Battlestar Galactica that dealt with abortion. It was well done, but also didn't take a particular stance on the subject. It also reminded me of a lot of Star Trek episodes where they metaphorically tackled political hot topics. Some of my favorite sf&f writers are alos very political (George Orwell, Ursula K. LeGuin,...).

Yet, I remember so many stories at TLE that had a strong polical slant that were just plain tacky.

So what works?

Movies and TV / Dragon Hunters
« on: February 12, 2006, 10:25:40 PM »
So I've just now seen an epsiode of this show on cartoon network. Has anyone else seen it?

Two guys (One kind of chinese and the other sort of italian) hunting dragons with their blue bunny rabbit in a arial archepelgo. All kind of Nodwick like.

And the theme song is by The Cure.

Apparently it's an import from Europe.

Opinions?

Role-Playing Games / D&D bashing D&D
« on: December 17, 2005, 10:45:37 AM »
So I've posted links to D&D's development articles before, but I thought this was interesting. It's the people who write D&D rule books saying what's wrong with D&D. Or at least the things that bug them.

So I don't think I would actually use one of these, particularly because I could see the initiative one causing some road rage.

So does anyone else around here waste hours of time by creating hordes of RPG characters that often never get used?

Books / Books worth Giving.

I need help deciding on what I should give my parents this year. Both are avid readers. My Dad likes historical fiction and my mom loves mysteries.

Suggestions? Please. New authors welcomed.

Um...for some reason I don't see this being a commercial success. So I doubt they will find a distributor.

I think I'm passing on this one.

The reviews are not good so far. Not to mention that the distributor didn't hold any screenings for critics, which is a big sign that they wanted to get the movie out before it got panned by the critics.

This also continues the trend that a once a pretty, young actress wins an oscar, she is obligated to make one completely awful action/superhero film where she wears a tight leather/spandex outfit.

Rants and Stuff / Christmas Shopping ranting
« on: December 02, 2005, 06:13:20 AM »
So is already the 2nd of December and I still haven't got gifts for my parents or five of my siblings.

I hate shopping. Normally I have all of my gifts purchased on-line by Thanksgiving.

This year, I just can't seem to make any decisions on what to get people.

Role-Playing Games / Campaign Setting Speculation
« on: November 18, 2005, 09:53:14 PM »
So I had an idea today.

What would it be like to play in a campaingn that had a very limited topographic area? No traveling around the entire world, or going to other planes.

Just staying in one place. Like a castle or small town.

I kind of ran a campaign this way, though it was a short lived one. I don't think that it went over too well, largely because I was new to DMing.

Has anyone played in a campaign where the entire course of the campaign remained localized?

What were the pros and cons?

Just a thread to comment on odd stuff mentioned in the press.

So here's mine for today: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10075910/

And how is this more psychologically damaging than wearing a giant chicken suit and waving a sign that says "____day sale."?
