Writing Group / Re: NaNoWriMo?

I probably should have posted this on Saturday, but I hit 50k words then. I'm trying to reach 60k right now and hopefully will hit somewhere between 80-90k before the end of the month. Unfortunately, my motivation is waning now.

I'm doing well, I'll admit it. I wasn't doing this well last year. Though I am writing fewer than a 1000 words per hour (actually probably around 500 words/hour). I'm just putting in a lot of hours.

If I didn't have to work, I might have hit the 50k mark already.

The NaNo site is down. Can't update my word count. I'm at 36,865 words right now. I didn't get as much done as I had hoped I would over the weekend.

I've been waking up at 4 a.m. to get writing done before going to week and then scraping as much time as I can get on the weekends. I'm actually really enjoying it so far.

Also, my user name is squeebe on the site if anyone was curious.

I'm not sure what my writing goal is right now. I just have to write a lot today because I have to work at my paying job the next four days. That will cut into my writing time a lot.

I have a feeling that I need to write a lot this month since I outlined my novel at 19 chapters and I'm only a chapter and half into it at 8,000 words currently.

I've gotten off to a good start. I'm over 7,500 words so far today.

I'm getting ready to do this. again.

Got my outline started. (I'm one of those that needs an outline if I'm going to make the deadline.)

WriterDan: trying to guess what WotF is looking for is rather self-defeating I've decided. After looking at my own stack of honorable mentions, I decided to look over a lot of them and start sending them out to other venues. I figure if it the story got honorable mention, it was a good story, it just didn't make through the group of stories submitted that quarter. It's a contest, which is actually a little more competitive than most short-story venues. (I'm also working on my next WotF entry currently.)

I've also read some of the stories getting published from WotF and I'm starting to question what they are thinking too. But there is no accounting for taste. What's brilliant and original to one person is bland and boring to someone else. It that weren't the case then getting published and writing best sellers would be a lot easier than it is.

So keep writing and keep submitting. And congratulations on getting honorable mention.

I've heard some buzz about this book, but I haven't actually looked at it much. I'm hoping to check it out at my local game store soon. Just having hard time finding the time right now.

Role-Playing Games / Re: all things Dice!

My only requirement for dice is that the number rolled can be read quickly and clearly. Not a big fan of dice with patterns, symbols, or odd numbering that makes it take longer than a tenth of a second for my brain to decode what number was rolled.

This is sad. Blackmoor was an awesome setting.

I agree, I really like being able to watch shows on-line. Course, I see there being on-line "networks" of a sort. Really just web sites that provide a good selection of shows.

I can see the successful networks surviving the change, but I don't see SyFy as being able to compete.

Movies and TV / Sci-Fi Channel

Now that Battlestar Galactica has ended spectacularly, there is some debate going on about the future of the Sci-Fi Channel. Adding to the discussion is that Sci-Fi plans to change its name to SyFy.

John Scalzi has posted a nice editorial about the change.

So Thoughts? Opinions? Ranting?

Writing Group / Re: Suggested Writing Excuses topic...
« on: March 09, 2009, 01:50:46 PM »
Some topics I'd like to see discussed.

  • How to kill off characters so your reader actually cares (but not so much that they put down the book to mourn).
  • How to rewrite and keep your sanity.
  • How to write when holding down another job and maintaining a life.
  • Knowing when something is ready to be sent off to submission.
  • Artwork and illustrations--when do they help and when do they hurt your writing?
  • Conventions and conferences--how to get the most out of them and which ones should not be missed.
  • Outlining and notes (I think you've touched on this before).
  • Writing from life and writing what you know.
  • Writing and mental health--how to keep both.
  • Ratings, censorship, and keeping it clean.
