Brandon Sanderson / Re: How did you find out about Brandon Sanderson?
« on: July 08, 2010, 02:26:49 PM »
Welcome all you new readers.  :D  I am glad that people have been finding Brandon through other major fantasy authors.  I think finishing WoT is a great boon for Brandon and will help attract him a large audience base so that we get to experience a lot more of his writing.

I went back through this post and relized the thread has been around for 3 years.  I have probably said it before on this thread but I started reading Brandon's book when it was announced that he was finishing WoT.  I have read all but the Alcatraz books.  I have only read the first on of them.  I plan saving for a kindle now that the price has dropped.  Is there plans to put the alcatraz books out on it.  I know the rest of Brandon's books are on it.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Warbreaker Wikipedia page?

Well i just went to the page and did not see a tag for notability on it anywhere.  You may have already staved off deletion.  The one review that was posted seemed to be wishy washy.  It was a bad magic system but I liked the rules is what I got out of it.

I am sure as this page grows it will get better data.  I think we need to find another review for it as well though.

I didn't notice that.  I thought the type of gem just affected the amount of stormlight that could be stored within it, not what could be done with it.  Of course all I have seen done with stormlight so far is the lashings.

They said emerald was the most valuable because Soulcasters could use it to make food.  This implies that they can't use diamond held stormlight for foodmaking, otherwise it's rarity compared to emeralds would make it more valuable.  Unless emeralds are actually rarer than diamonds on Roshar, but I'm going to assume they aren't.

Now that you mention it I remember that when they were explaining the values.  Which makes me wonder if lashings can be pulled from any stormlight or only certain gems.  Also can someone use all gem types or are they specifice to certain people.  If they are specific, are there people the equivalent of a Mistborn.

I might have to look that one up.  I am in a reading lull right now with nothing new to read.  I have been going through my bookshelf and rereading them.  I am just finishing off The Annotated Elminster trilogy.

I am glad that you are enjoying the WoT books.  There are a few that are better then others.  Over all I enjoyed them all though.  I just finished my reread last year in time to finish the new book at the beginning of this year.  Now it is just a waiting game.  I will be picking up the Way of Kings book later this summer too.

I like the purple. It helps me keep track of where I am at in the post. :D.  I probably won't be attending any of these signings.  If he hits LA for Orange County for the WoT tour I am going to try and stop by.

Brandon posted his tour on his site today.   http://brandonsanderson.com/blog/899/THE-WAY-OF-KINGS-Tour-Details

It has been a while since I posted on here but here are my thoughts on the prologue and the chapters so far.

I really liked the lashing system in the fact that it completely changed gravity for the person or object it was being used on.  It wasn't just having my feet be pulled to the cieling by a magnet but having my whole body orient that way as well (i.e. No blood rushing to your head when hanging upside down effects).

We also see a glimpse of what I think is going to be a second magic system with Kalidin where he seems to glow and move faster.  This one does not seem to be related to stormlight as there was non mentioned on the battlefield.  However, I could be mistaken because the currency is clear beads with gems in them and the gems are frequently infused with stormlight and soldiers could easily be carrying money.

One of the things I really want to see is the first storm.  So far we have only seen hints of its affects on the enviroment and locations of citys.

Now for the part everyone will complain about.  After reading what is available so far I find it very disjointed.  I dont mind the point of view changes in most books but this seems to happen way to quickly.  The chapters are so short and unrelated because we are going though character introduction.  I expect this to change later in the book or series as the characters meet up and there storylines connect.

This is most likely a personal thing.  In most books I read the point of view starts with a main character or characters and then the point of view switches as the characters seperate and new characters are added.  From the beginning you have more of an idea on how the stories relate together.  Right now it feals like I am reading three books at one time, a few pages from each, then on to the next in hope that in the end they tie together.

Well I changed my mind in that it was Asmo because Shadar Logoth is after Age of Legends and during the time of the trolloc wars.  With that in mind I still don't think it is the shadow.   It sounded to much like and individual.

Doing a reread and just finished the part where Fain gets the dagger back from the tower.   He mentions going after Rand and "old enemy".  I don't have the exact quote on hand though.  Any idea who this old enemy is.  This seem to be from Mordiths perspective so it would have to be someone from the AoL (makes me think Asmodean but I haven't got back to his death scene yet).  My only thoughts are one of the forsaken if he is referring to an individual.

To answer your question about why Vasher didn't use Kalad's Phantoms, he couldn't he gave up his "extra" breaths to the 1st God King, and they were passed down to Susebron.

If they are already lifeless, they do not need breath to  be commanded, only the command words to use them.  The same way that lifeless army works.  The only reason they were not used before this is that no one realized what they were.  If they thought they were normal statues they would not try to break the command word or words.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Sanderon's WOT without reading the series?
« on: July 06, 2009, 09:07:57 PM »
Seems how it is one huge story with character development from book 1 through the end it would be impossible to read.  If you just picked up one of the later books and read Rands parts you would be very confused.  I have known alot of people who are not into RJ because of his winded style.  If you don't like to read the style I would suggest audio books of them.  The detail tends to fit in better with the audio books.

As for having to wait for his books to come out after WOT, you don't have much to worry about there.   He stated he is going to try and keep releasing his own books at the same time.  I know his site currently states he is 90% done with revisions for Way of Kings.  Last week that was at 75% so he is actively working on that.  I think he will finish that before diving heavily into Shifting Winds.

I liked troll. To bad the concept probably would not fit into the world very well. :D

We know that bonds can be seen (the link to the dark one) by some people and that they are like strings connecting people.  It is easily possible that they bond to land was severed when the doorway was destroyed then.

As for the Finns killing Lanfear, I find that very likely as they seem to have an aversion to anything with a connection to the shadow.  Or at least the other ones did and you had to be careful to not ask them questions connected with the dark one.
