Brandon Sanderson / Re: The Gathering Storm Chapter One
« on: September 15, 2009, 04:06:27 AM »
I think it's fascinating that somehow I knew that specific sentences were Brandon Sanderson-style prose. I guess I'm more familiar with his books than I thought? For example, I think there was a sentence about how the White Tower was a metaphor, and it seemed straight out of Mistborn. It's just me nitpicking because I have no real complaints. :)

Brandon Sanderson / Awakening speculation (Spoilers)
« on: June 17, 2009, 09:26:07 PM »
I just finished reading Warbreaker for the second time, and Awakening has really captured my imagination. Are steel and stone the only inorganic materials that can be Awakened? What about glass? Or plastic? Or iron? Could you Awaken a cloth made in our modern times that is a mix of cotton and polyester? Could you encase a dinosaur skeleton in stone and awaken that?
Are swords the only steel thing that would become sentient? What about a lance, or a steel cube? I wonder what other Commands could have been given to Nightblood. Protect me?
Vasher had those two pairs of shirts and pants fight along side him. I wonder if Awakened pants or shoes could be taught to dance.

depends on your definition of "lived." Some authors have military, law enforcement, or journalism backgrounds that help with their writing. others have their personal studies or hobbies. some have religion or travels. the point is, everyone can draw on something to have ideas. ideas are a dime-a-dozen. the kicker is how good of a writer are you...
That's something I've never thought of before but it makes perfect sense. I'd say Robert Jordan was good at military themed-writing, Brandon Sanderson writes a lot about religion

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Gathering Storm Title

I think it's actually not such a bad title. It sort of fits with the others. The Shadow Rising...The Gathering Storm. Not a bad title. But the tentative title for the next book...was it Swirling Clouds? No way.

I went to a book signing a few months ago and Mr. Sanderson read an excerpt, about an assassin. I asked if, like his other books, there would be discussions of religion and crazy magic systems. He said there would be 10 magic systems, and I couldn't tell if he was serious or joking. Anyway I'm excited because this will be the first huge, epic series I read from the very beginning! I found out about Harry Potter maybe two years after it started. I was a tiny kid when Wheel of Time first came out and I only just read GRR Martin this month, although maybe that's a good thing because I have a shorter wait for book 5.

Brandon Sanderson / Harry Potter unforgivable curses
« on: February 16, 2009, 05:39:47 AM »
The other day I was thinking about my favorite book, Harry Potter, and I thought of something. The three Unforgivable Curses which land a person in Azkaban for life are murder, torture, and the Imperius curse (stealing someone's free will maybe?). And then I realized the forbidden magic in the Wheel of Time is basically the same. Aes Sedai can't use the Power to kill, or use the Power as a weapon, which rules out torture, and Compulsion (maybe analogous to slavery?) is forbidden too, although not by the Oath Rod. I thought it was interesting that the same things were outlawed in two different books.

I could be wrong, but my theory is that it had nothing to do with saidin and saidar, but is power drawn directly from the Dark One.

I recommend Running with the Demon by Terry Brooks, it's part of a trilogy. I can't think of any other fantasy I know without elves or dwarves. Also it's set in Illinois.
And don't forget Warbreaker, or Alcatraz versus the Evil Librarians.

As per several PoV's from Aes Sedia/female channelers we know that there is something strange going on with Saidar from the time Rand cleansed Saidin and on.

The strangeness is caused by the massive amounts of saidar and saidin being used by the Bowl of the Winds. There is more of a problem the closer to the spot it was used and little to no problem when not close.
Maybe you were referring to the 'failing' of saidar instead - wards to keep rats out of the White Tower and saidar Keepings to keep food fresh aren't working, because the Dark One is going to break out soon. Similarly, flies and weevils are proliferating - remember in book 11 Perrin goes to So Habor and they have a massive warehouse full of rotten grain.

Where does Mat fit in?  He kind of seems out of place to me.  What does the signet ring and the medallion mean?  We know the nine moons means Tuon, but what does the fox chasing two ravens mean?  What's the medallion supposed to be meant for.  I know what the medallion does, but what is it meant for?

Mat seems to be the wild card in all this.  He's always late to the party in this series. Rand found out he was the Dragon Reborn, Perrin found out about his wolve senses long before Mat discovered his luck.  Likewise, Rand found all his women, Perrin found Faile long before Mat found Tuon.  So I wonder where Mat fits in any ideas?

Don't forget Mat blew the Horn of Valere in book 2 and no one else can use it unless he dies. The signet ring was something he picked by chance, which showed a fox chasing ravens (symbol of Seanchean) surrounded by nine moons. Tuon's damane had a Foretelling that she would marry 'the fox that makes the ravens fly.'

The Aelfinn said "to live you must die" which is obviously a paradox. I think Nicola Treehill had a Foretelling about 'the world not yet done with battle' and Elayne Min and Aviendah standing on a boat while 'the guardians balance the servants' so I don't think any of those three will die.
I suspect Robert Jordan intended to follow through with the Christ allusions, and Rand will die and come back to life in order to defeat the Dark One.

Would elevators and electricity work in the World of Dreams?

I was under the impression you could just think something up and it would work a certain way, without really needing a rationale for why it works.

ex: "I want to stand on this circular platform and it will hover in the air." No need for electricity, pulleys, shafts etc.

Well it would be even easier to fly or teleport, but using an elevator might be cool. I was reading the part in book four or five where they are searching through Elaida's papers in the World of Dreams and the papers keep disappearing because their reflection in the dream world is weak...I wonder what would happen to a computer, if you tried to turn it on or access the files or...go on the internet. There's no electricity in The Wheel of Time...I wonder if it was in Robert Jordan's notes about how electricity works in the World of Dreams.

Also, seeing the percentage bar move so fast is really cool. 400,000 words x 1% = 4,000 words, which is about 5 single spaced pages in Microsoft Word. I bet if Mr. Sanderson pulled an all-nighter he could finish the first draft before his birthday.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Warbreaker: Free Ebook

I hope the title doesn't get changed because the big reveal of in the last part, of who Warbreaker was, was one of my favorite moments, as well as Lightsong's final act. It made everything make so much sense
The cover art is beautifully done - it'll be great to have the book in hardback instead of in Microsoft Word!

One thing that was odd was "BioChroma" sounds a little too modern and technical, too Latin/Greek. It's weird when you expect all fantasy to be like Lord of the Rings or King Arthur. But it's not a big deal, it's good to be suprised.

I never quite understood the differences between Tones and Colors though. Maybe I read too fast.

(I like the covers, except for the fact that they keep changing the characters' appearances. Book 1 and 5 are the best, in my opinion.)

Would elevators and electricity work in the World of Dreams?
