Brandon Sanderson / Re: On Feruchemical 'Mistings'

Well then where would the other mist come from?
Ruin's power, no longer contained by Preservation's trap but now controlled by Sazed.

I would guess that in the normal mists Sazed will have an easier time using Preservation's power and in the new kind of mist he will have an easier time using Ruin's power.

I bet she has some guilt with this and her friendship with Elayne.
You have no idea.  Expect some interesting discussion when Aviendha and Elayne meet again.

Then the two run into Seanchan at the gateway home. (Where the hell were they?)
As melbatoast says, they went all the way across the Aryth Ocean to the Seanchan continent.

-Suian, Min, Leane, and Logain have found the gathering of the Blues in Salidar. I'm glad that they're safe now. I had this bad feeling that something bad might happen to them before they got there.
Well, it did, sort of.  The whole run-in with Gareth Bryne was, on the face of it, pretty bad.  His totally unexpected personal pursuit all the way to Salidar, though...  A whole bunch of Aes Sedai planning a rebellion with no general, and one of the universally acknowledged Great Generals shows up on their doorstep...

She somehow blocked Liandran's access to the Power with a weave and tied it off. She didn't still her, but left it so that Liandran will have to find somebody skilled enough to untie that weave to ever touch the Source again. This scene left me breathless. I also have a new appreciation for how strong Nyneave is with the Power for overpowering Moghedian.
Very nasty punishment imo.  Effectively stilling Liandrin, but leaving her just that tiny bit of hope that she might some day find someone able and willing to break that shield, strikes me as very sadistic.

I went and found the post I was thinking of.  Note point 2:
1.  The metal chunk that Elend ate is intended to be something of a mystery.  Much like atium, actually.  Suffice it to say that Atium isn't, and never was, what people thought it was.

I intended Allomancy to be much like a real science.  People investigate and put things into boxes, trying to describe and understand the world around them.  That doesn't mean they always get things right, however.

Let me say this, as I don't want to spoil too much.  If that metal Elend ate were fused into specific alloys with certain metals, it could have instead created Mistings of each of the different Allomantic powers.  Atium's abilities are not entirely explored yet either.

2.  Allomancy, Feruchemy, and Hemalurgy all work as they once did.  However, now they are more directly affected by the presence or absence of the mists, which will slowly return to the world but not be of the extent they once were.  (The mists are now an extent of Sazed's power, and where they roam, he is better able to influence things.  There will also be two kinds of mists.)  Note that in the future, Feruchemy powers will start to fracture and split, creating Feruchemical "Mistings."

Yes, this means that in the future series, it will be possible for a person to have one Allomantic power and one Feruchemical power.  It will create for some very interesting mixing of powers.

3.  The Terris prophesies were created by Preservation before he attempted his imprisonment.  He knew that he wouldn't be able to do much for the world after he did what he did, and he foresaw a LOT of what was to come.

4.  Way before Alendi's time.  Hence the need for the prophesies.  But Ruin managed to corrupt them.

I understand it for the mist-filled world but the world in which these new names are going to be created is going to be mist-free(At least gaseous-body-of-Preservation-mist-free).  I don't know...
I don't feel like going to the effort of digging up the post right now, but I remember Brandon mentioning in the Q&A thread that there would still be mists - two types of them, in fact - and that it would be easier for Sazed to do things in areas covered by them.

Regardless, I don't see how the presence or absence of Mist has any bearing on the name "Tineye".

Optional rules for Atium and Larasium, and possibly their alloys, would be useful tools for making plot devices.
Oh, and I'd be interested and amused to see rules for Atium Savants.  I doubt it's even possible to become one without Ruin's (or Sazed's, after the trilogy) active cooperation, but it's still a detail that would make for a nice sense of completeness.

I think all the hype about the Eye of the World was just that - hype.  If the amount of power there were truly enough to free the Dark One completely, as Moiraine says, the Dark One's followers would have freed him completely with trivial ease back in the War of Power.  It is also clearly far from enough to fill all the Dragon Reborn's needs until he can cleanse Saidin.  The pool of power itself is really just a red herring and a unique way to guard the real purpose of the Eye - the Horn of Valere, one of the Seals, and the dragon banner.  It cannot be cleared by any means save a man channeling, and clearing it requires a man of such strength that few besides the true Dragon Reborn would be capable of it.  Thus, the three items guarded by the pool are safe until either the Dragon Reborn or one of the Forsaken comes.

I want to see a) full Allomantic, Feruchemic, and Hemalurgic* details for all 16 metals, and b) details on what a combination Allomancer/Feruchemist can do and how.  The Lord Ruler is the only example in the books of someone actually using the synergy possible between Allomancy and Feruchemy, and it's never explained except in vague speculation.

I would like the mechanics to be capable of handling everything from The Lord Ruler himself all the way down to random skaa and everything in between.  Mistborn of various strengths, from the original few down to the last after the bloodlines get diluted too much, 16 types of Mistings with the same range of strength, 16 types of Allomantic savants including what it takes to become one, full Feruchemists ranging from TLR down to whatever the low end is, 16 Feruchemical "Misting" types, what happens for each possible combination of Misting + Feruchemy, etc.  Game balance, for those who want parties of mixed Misting/Mistborn and normal people, should be in terms of how badass a normal person has to be to match the metal user, not in toning down the magic system.

Optional rules for Atium and Larasium, and possibly their alloys, would be useful tools for making plot devices.

Ideally I'd like setting information for several time periods, but doing a proper job of all of them would probably require extra rule books.  Just to list them off, I'd like to see the time before Rashek and Alendi, the consolidation of the Final Empire under Rashek, a point or two during the millennium of TLR's rule, the time just before the trilogy (if it's significantly different in a way other than the typical strength of Allomancers), and a suitable period after the trilogy.

* I realize Hemalurgy is capable of some very complicated and advanced effects, like the creation of Koloss and changing mistwraiths to Kandra.  I don't expect all of those to be fully specified or even mentioned, but the simple "use X spike to steal Y ability, losing Z strength" stuff should all be there.

There's not much to theorize about for Brandon's own works right now, and Wheel of Time theorizing has been done to death elsewhere for quite some time, to the point of a rather extensive and detailed FAQ being put together.  Just about every even halfway plausible theory about anything remotely significant in the series is listed and analyzed in depth there to the point where there's really not much left to talk about that isn't just repeating things.  The WoTFAQ (just google it) has not been updated for Knife of Dreams, but that one book only adds so much to speculate about.

Yes, but I don't think his insanity is of a kind likely to affect his ability to notice the taint, or to make him lie about it.

Brassmind: Firefighter?

Walk right into a bonfire and start dumping all the heat into your brassminds so you don't burn.  Just be careful to stop at exactly the same time you get out of the fire so you don't end up a frozen popsicle.

Casco, please watch the spoilers.  Any plot points after the beginning of The Fires of Heaven are off limits for this thread until after JoeC posts that he's gotten to them.

The one section 1.1.6 of the Wheel of Time FAQ is about.

There, I think that was a sufficiently non-spoiler way to specify it.

Ah yes, that little mystery.  Robert Jordan's statement that it's "obvious" has always amused me, and I will be very interested to see JoeC's reaction.
