Everything Else / Wolfram Alpha
« on: June 08, 2009, 10:53:46 PM »
So i know it's been around for a little bit now, but i've been coming up with (and looking for) fun things to type into this neat little internet-toy.

Anyone else have any other ideas they've tried/found?

Fun things to type into wolfram alpha (wolframalpha.com):
1. what do women want?
2. What is best in life?
3. Open the pod bay doors, Hal
4. Are you a robot?
5. how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop?
6. i love you
7. how much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

Everything Else / awesome eating establishments
« on: May 22, 2009, 08:46:49 PM »
So we go to eat on occasion here at work at little known/small eating establisments (i.e. non-mainstream/chains/whatever) and we know a few good little nooks and crannies around here. Today we went to this place called "Simient custard", which is, as it name claims, a custard stand, but they sell actual food too. They make a really good buffalo chicken wrap for 4 bucks, and to top it off, it's about a foot long by 5 inches wide, so it's quite sizable.

Anyways, to the point of this thread, what sort of small, non-mainstream eating establisments do you have around you that you love to visit, sort of like a local secret? :)

Everything Else / Mockingbirds: Nature's assassins

Ok, so maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration, but still, this article was rather interesting.

Apparently mockingbirds can discern one human from another (which is probably better than humans to mockingbirds)

Video Games / Phantasy star online

I know this game is ancient by today's standards, and the official servers dont exist anymore, but anyone ever play this? I love this game, very much so.

I used to play on a private server about a year ago, but they delete your accounts after 60 days of inactivity, but they removed that policy, so i started playing again! Someone should come play it with me! You can play it on any console you own, or download their BB client and play it on PC. :D

My character name is Eerongal, but I think you need to have someone's guildcard before you can message them, so if you wanna play it, you can hit me up via AIM, it should be in my profile! :D

Everything Else / 403 Forbidden error
« on: April 09, 2009, 01:49:22 PM »
So, for the past week at home I've been getting a 403 Forbidden error when I try to visit here from home, at first I didn't think much of it, until i was able to get here from work. So I gave it a few days just to see if it wasn't something that would clear up, but it still appears to be happening. Anyone else have or had been experiencing this? Or did my IP get blocked somehow?  :o

Role-Playing Games / Call o' Cuthy
« on: March 31, 2009, 05:15:25 PM »
anyone else here play Call of Cthulhu? Got any good stories, or past gaming experiences? My group *loves* this game, but we currently aren't playing a campaign of it.

However, they've expressed interest in doing so, so I've been working on a campaign (complete with some custom rules for various things) I think is kinda neat. Most of my players have never read any works of HP Lovecraft and crew, so they don't know many of the rich histories and such behind some of the stuff they see when we play. So the campaign I'm working on has the basic idea ripped off from the video game eternal darkness. Basically, the players are in a house where a friend/relative/whatever recently died and, at his request, are staying there for 2 weeks before the final will reading. In this time, the players find and read texts, following hints and clues left by the deceased person. Each text they read puts them in a "Flashback" scenario that replays some classic lovecraft stories/histories/scenarios. I've taken some stories and turned them into scenarios, some histories of various books and done so, and some actual historic events and put lovecraftian twists on them.

Edit: also, if anyone is interested, I can post all of the notes I've made. note that they are rather generic, and "fill in the blank" style for yourself, and I don't currently have any maps or anything.

Everything Else / Think green, save gas?
« on: March 31, 2009, 02:26:10 PM »
If you could power your car off of compressed air from a standard air compressor, would you?

The above link leads to a car called the "City flow Air" made by a company called Motor Development International, based in luxembourg. They have a line of cars from small, three person cars (airPod) to goods/passenger transport vehicles (MultiFlowAir), they currently *AREN'T* in production, but the company predicts to have a factory starting in New York near the end of 2010/start of 2011. These vehicles are run off of compressed air, some of them hybrid air/gas vehicles, some full air.

The city flow air, full air compression version, gets up to about 70 mph, the hybrid version up to about 80.  The hybrid version gets around 1500 KM (almost 1,000 miles) to a full tank of gas. The way their "Hybrid" versions work is that they work off of air up until a certain point (i think like 40-50 mph) then kicks in the gas power for the upper speeds. Obviously this vehicle isn't a speed demon/hot rod sort of car. Obviously, it's very environment friendly.

The prices for each are projected at approx. this (in US dollars, converted from euros):

AirPod ~ (no Current price estimate)
OneFlowAir (basic Model) ~ $5,000
OneFlowAir (standard model) ~ $7,000
MiniFlowAir ~$12,000
CityFlowAir ~ $17,000

So my question is this. Would you support the idea of car fuel sources moving to Air Compression? The technology appears to be quite possible, and economical. In theory, would you like to see this fully replace petroleum driven vehicles, or would you just want it to become a "hybrid" driven vehicle technology? Personally, I'm kinda interested to see if this can be incorporated with either electric or hydrogen, to create a very economical, clean vehicle power source. Mostly, I just wanna save a bunch of money on gas. :P

Edit: Oops, forgot to post this, as well. This page contains a demo of their 2002 experimental vehicle. They still currently use it as a test vehicle. Note that it is very bare bones, and has no sound suppression at all.

Located in arizaona. I would TOTALLY eat there.

They have an 8,000  calorie burger.

To put that in perspective, to eat that many calories in a day you would need to eat:

Breakfast: Three fried-egg sandwiches loaded with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, fried onions and mayonnaise. Two cups of coffee. One five-egg omelet. One bowl of grits. Three slices of French toast topped with powdered sugar. Three chocolate-chip pancakes.

Lunch: One pound of enriched pasta. Two large ham and cheese sandwiches with mayo on white bread. Energy drinks packing 1,000 calories.

Dinner: One pound of pasta. An entire pizza. More energy drinks.

Get it here!

Anyone else ever play this game? it's currently in alpha, and it's a rogue like game combined with a city-builder that generates a huge, persistent dynamic world. I've been playing it all weekend. It's cryptic, but once you get the hang of it, it's fun as all heck!

Also here's a wiki dedicated to the game that i've found very helpful.

The recentley released kindle 2 is under scrutiny by the Author's guild for violating author's rights by having Text-to-speech conversion.

While I'm all for protecting someone's IP, this strike anyone else as kinda...dumb?

Everything Else / Forum CYOA
« on: February 26, 2009, 04:26:04 AM »
I'm bored, so I figured I would start up a forum Choose Your Own Adventure. For those who don't know, I'm basically going to present a situation, and take suggestions from everyone, and do things based on those suggestions! I don't know how much time I'll have to update, but I'm gonna try to update about once a week or so, so keep the suggestions rolling until I get a chance to get around to it. If for whatever reason, you feel I update to slow, and you have the gumption, feel free to make your own parts of the story, and I'll move on from there. I'll try to keep it going until everyone loses interest, but it should hopefully provide a bit of a distraction!

Note that I won't use EVERY suggestion, just the ones that catch my interest and are easiest to do!

Simple example of how it works:

Me: I find myself standing in a room, with 1 window and two doors to the north and south. What should I do?

Poster: Open the window and climb out

Me: Opens the window and climbs out.

so here goes.....

So one day I'm sitting at home,

When suddenly, I became bored with life!!

So I decided to become a super hero!

Unsure of what powers I really possess, I head to the rooftops to look for trouble, when suddenly....

A CRY FOR HELP!!

Ever vigilant and ready for action, I.....

Help guys! What do I do!?
