Brandon Sanderson / Re: The Color of Vin's Eyes
« on: May 27, 2010, 05:06:58 AM »
I'll be an Omega. I don't want to read anything prior to it being published. I don't want anything to be spoiled. I enjoy reading some of the deleted scenes afterward, I like the annotations, and I even read the preview chapters Mr. Sanderson puts up on his website prior to release, but those are in finished form, so I don't think that counts.

Omegas Unite! 8) ;D

I think it's pretty clear the writers did have the mythology and all the island related mysteries planned out from the start. There is way too much symbolism and foreshadowing in the early seasons to argue otherwise.

Character wise? Not so much. Back in the third season (I think, it may have been the second), the writers didn't know where they were going, and made up a lot of characters' backstory and whatnot, just to fill time. Once they set an end date, they stopped all of the fluff and the show improved. Characters' storylines still changed, and they adapted parts to the actors, but it was all moving towards the end at that point.

I don't know when you stopped watching Peter, but you might want to think about retrying the series. The last couple seasons have been fantastic.

I just checked and it still works for me. Maybe it's only good for people in the US.

Ruin may have made Atium so super powerful, so that it would be super valuable. People don't tend to lose valuable things, plus they will go to extremes to find it, and if people find it, Ruin finds it.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Elantris discussion? **SPOILERS**

Question 4 clarification: When Raoden was in Elantris, Ien would insist on hovering near him, even coming to Raoden when he extended his hand.
The only explanation I could think of (that could be arrived at with knowledge at hand) was that this is how all Mad Seons act whose Bondeds are still relatively sane. The others don't act that way simply because (1) Seons are rare and (2) those few that are now in Elantris have Hoed Bondeds. I was just looking for other possible explanations.

Well, we don't know that the other mad Seons didn't hang around their Bonded, even the Hoed. The Hoed originally just littered the streets, maybe the Mad Seons spent a lot of time hovering around their Hoed and then wandering aimlessly.

Well, the series isn't over. The Finns still have a big part to play, IMO.

One huge problem with that theory is that she has family and memories that place her growing up in Baerlon.  So that's not possible.  I think we have to just accept that no character in play, except some of the darkspawn have any possibility of being finns.  It's remotely possible that Shaidar Haran is made from a finn instead of a Trolloc.

Ahh, sorry, I didn't make it clear, but I don't think the theory was ever really a true theory. The author didn't seem to really believe it (and I didn't), but it was very well put together, and I kind of wish it were true.

I will point out that the only family she seems to remember/talk about are three "aunts".

I remember reading it on Wotmania, so I went and used the internet's wayback machine to try and find it (wotmania closed down about 8 months ago). I found this one, but I seem to remember another one. The comments kind of flesh out the idea a bit, maybe my mind built up its awesomeness since it's been a while since I last read it.

Anyways, here's the theory:

And the Wotmania Theory Post had a lot of good ones:

I read an awesome theory once that Min was a Finn, or at least part-Finn. The theory said that the Finns kept and raised humans for clothes, and Min escaped the Finn realm. There was all kinds of evidence, like the fact that Min sees auras above people's heads, and when Matt visits the Finn through the doorway in Tear, they look above his head to answer his questions. Or that Min is from roughly the same area of Andor that the Tower of Ghengi is located.

Min the Finn. It was awesome.

Well, just one Ashmount (for now).

Yeah, it's the volcano in Iceland. But it's kind of interesting to see what the world of Mistborn might look like.

The concept of an atium misting doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
If your ability to be an allomancer comes from the amount of preservation you have letting you tap into its power, and the burning of atium is fueling allomancy through concentrated ruin; does it seem logical that the power of preservation would produce something that doesn't actually tap into preservation's power at all, but, instead, ruin's?
I'm pretty sure that's not a run-on sentence.

I agree. I might accept it a little easier if an Atium Misting was actually just a Temporal metal misting of some sort, but even then, it doesn't quite fit.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Mistborn 3 Annotations Discussion *Spoilers*

Looking back just a bit, Chapter Seventy's annotation (The Reason for the Mistsickness) says:
Quote
Suffice it to say that there are people who have Snapped because of intense joy or other emotions. It just doesn't happen as frequently and is more difficult to control.

Anyone think in the future trilogies there will be Rioters testing the population trying to Snap them? Maybe Nicrosil-enhanced Rioters, but still, just a quick Rioting of joy and then you're done. Something official, where people make an appointment and visit a "doctors" office for the test, not Allomancers randomly targeting people on the streets. Seems like a much more civilized way than beating your kids. ;D

While we're talking about this, what happens if an allomancer burns an imbued spike? Say, if Vin swallowed her earing and burned its bronze?

Probably the same thing that happened when Vin tried to burn Sazed's metalmind. She'd get the power from the metal, but any imbued power would be lost.

Also, I have a question. Since there is a balance, and there is never more Ruin than Preservation in total, does it mean that if atium comes back to earth after it's used, would Larasium do so as well? It takes hundred years for atium, and if larasium would, I think we have a storyline for the next possible book in Mistborn world, where there are only Mistings, and suddenly, the possibility of becoming a Mistborn reappears. How much chaos would that make and how people would react to it, it's a perfect background for a story of Mr. Sanderson.

I think that the mists are where most of Preservation's body is found. We've seen Dark Mists, which were of Ruin, but the mists that come out at night (and that Vin uses to fuel her Allomancy at the end of Book 1 & 3) are Preservation's body.

There may be a Lerasium mine somewhere (Peter gave me a RAFO), but the majority of Preservation's body is in Mist form.
