News:
"Magic is what makes fantasy fantastic," someone says, "you can't apply rules to them or else it loses wonder!" I respond, "Sure, but if you want to write them you will certainly want to know how they work." Writing is all about execution, and I find applying some basic laws of physics to magic systems make them more understandable and realistic. Here, I'm going to outline my basic method for developing a magic system.

« on: April 26, 2011, 05:23:18 AM »I'm stuck on this rape scene – I've never written that sort of bit before, and it makes me feel kind of strange seeing what I've come up with. But the rest of the chapter's done, so if I can't finish it I think I'll send it in and come back to the dark parts later.
To be fair, doesn't exactly sound like it would be easy to write. Yikes. (And make sure you tag it--I forgot to tag the violent bits in one of my subs once and I was mortified.)
Sorry for my absence lately, folks. End of semester madness here. A couple more days and I should be done. Well, "done."

Heh. Well, I've always been good with using grammar, but it wasn't until I started learning Spanish and Latin that I really started learning what all the different pieces are called. (Sound familiar? 
) I've picked up a lot more of that now due to my work as a tutor and teacher--it's really become essential for me to know because I often work with students who are learning English as a second language.

No, you're correct. Actually, I'm going to borrow your explanation--as an English teacher and tutor, I see students writing in passive voice all the time.
