Go for it, Caleb.

Yeah, 4000 words is the ballpark, though it's a pretty, ahem, flexible guideline. :) Generally people don't seem to mind getting more than that.

By the way, everyone, after tomorrow I'm going to be away until the 12th of July.

...So anything that goes wrong during that time span is Chaos's fault. :P

See you all when I get back!

Reading Connie Willis's Blackout.

So I finished it last night and posted something snarky to Twitter about looking forward to the other half of the book, and then realized that Blackout and All Clear are actually appearing on the Hugo ballot as one item and felt kind of like a jerk.  Maybe I should wait to review it until I've read both...

Whatever authentication process that Twitter/Echofon for Firefox have just switched to is clearly not working, since it has refused to complete the process every single time I've tried (and it pesters me constantly as long as I stay logged in).

Everything Else / Anyone used a Mobicool W45 cooler?
« on: June 30, 2011, 06:01:58 PM »
Hey folks,

So we're looking at this cooler and trying to decide how well it would work for camping. It's battery powered and can charge on car batteries while the car's running. I have no idea how long the battery lasts after it's charged, though, or how long it takes to charge it.

I've already checked the instruction manual and online and found precisely nothing useful. Anybody used one of these?

Awesome! That makes things a whole lot easier. Best of luck to both of you. :)

A verdict on From The Notebooks of Dr. Brain: Absolutely brilliant in number of ways,  disappointing in others; worth the read over all.

Also read Kowal's Shades of Milk and Honey (awesome), Shadow Blade by Seressia Glass (pretty good, though mostly a romp) and am now onto Blackout by Connie Willis. Having fun on that one so far.

Having your name on a published novel might depend more on whether the project is successful sales-wise than whether you've simply done the work. How your friend plans on publishing these novels (is he planning on going through a trade publisher? self publishing through a printing press? etc) might also make a significant difference in that regard.

Don't have much to contribute to the actual number-dropping going on, other than to say that I feel your pain--I've just started a bit of freelance work/been approached about freelance work in a few different areas in the last year, and I struggle with this question a lot. I would caution you against the "I'm not a professional, so I should work for cheap" ideology though (and yes, saying so makes me a hypocrite). Definitely be reasonable considering your own experience and all the rest of it, but your time IS valuable, and if you're confident enough in your ability to accept the work, you should be fairly compensated for your effort. :)

Reading From The Notebooks of Dr Brain by Minister Faust. The premise is great but I can't stand the characters.

Of course. A week's break never hurts anyone. :)

Sometimes that happens. Likely those submissions will collect a few more comments in the next couple of weeks as people finish up whatever else they're busy with right now, even if you submit something new. Field's wide open if you would like to submit tomorrow --I suspect it wouldn't hurt--but it's up to you. :)

Finished Hundred Thousand Kingdoms. Enjoyed the thing for the most part; still trying to decide how I feel about the ending. I've just started Inside Straight (a Wild Cards novel), but I'm not far enough in yet to give any sort of a verdict.
