Reading Excuses / Just a thought
« on: December 17, 2008, 07:45:39 AM »
You know, with submissions staggered as they are, (which will probably be something of an issue even if we start submitting more often or whatever we ultimately decide on) I wonder, for the people doing a chapter of their novels every time, should they do a brief recap of what went before? Like, a short paragraph? Or even just include the last paragraph of what they wrote before? I find I'm having just a wee bit of trouble getting back into second chapters.

What do you guys think? Too much work? Not useful enough to bother? Anything else?

Reading Excuses / Dec 15 - Raethe - Passage to Zero
« on: December 16, 2008, 08:34:40 AM »
Still Monday. Gotta love PST.

Anyway. I'm extraordinarily curious to hear what you folks have to say - and I mean it when I say don't be nice. Go on, tear it to shreds.

...

You know, like you've wanted to do ever since you read my critique for you.

:)

Edit: Sorry for forgetting the language tag, guys. I was a little bit out of it by the time I got around to sending this out. I can be a total moron sometimes. Speaking of moronic, eheh, please, uhh, pretend you didn't see the bit in the top left hand corner. I'd prepped this story for submission a while back and I forgot to remove that...

Writing Group / On Submitting Experimental Pieces
« on: December 12, 2008, 10:32:00 PM »
So, I've been agonizing over this for a little while, and I figured I might as well post it here on the off chance that somebody knows more than me (not hard).

Say you're an aspiring author who's never been published, but you've finished a novelette that you're convinced is almost ready to go out. Except that your manuscript does a couple of funky things: it switches tenses, and it's not actually a linear story, something which is foreshadowed but not definitively revealed until the end.

Should aspiring author be worried that if she sends this manuscript out, the editor or pre-reader is going to look at the ms, catch the hints that all is not quite at as it seems, assume that aspiring author doesn't know what the heck they are doing, and put it down before they've read the ending and seen that the funky stuff does have a point? Would aspiring author be better off to start with a few more conventional stories, until she's had a couple things published and people might actually believe she knows what she's doing?

Hypothetically speaking, of course. ;)

Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

Reading Excuses / Those submitting on the 15th
« on: December 12, 2008, 10:14:05 PM »
Just thought I'd remind everyone to double-check the email list before sending their submissions out. We have two or three new additions to the list (depending on how often you check the email list thread) and we don't want anyone to miss out. :)

35
I thought I'd start a seperate thread since I'm not sure everybody is stil following the discussion on the email list thread, and I want to make sure everybody sees this one.

People are already talking about how a month is a long time to wait between submissions, especially if you're submitting a novel. With an approximate 4000 words a week maximum, it could take a VERY long time for someone to get their whole novel reviewed through RE. Which, I agree, is a problem.

Some people are proposing that instead of having a submission deadline every other week, the 1st and the 15th, we have weekly submissions. I'll throw out a quick pros-and-cons:

Pros - you'd have less time to wait between getting submissions for your own critiques, particularly beneficial if you're submitting a novel.
 - it would (presumably) get all of us writing more often to meet those deadlines, which is the point. Right? ;)

Cons - We have a lot of people working or going to school full time in this group, I'd imagine, and those people may have trouble keeping up with bi-weekly submissions.
 - It would mean a lot less time to critique more submissions, which might negatively effect the chance of everybody getting at least one or two decent critiques every time.

Edit: It might also mean that people who were ready for the 15th might not be ready for the eighth. We could juggle around submissons between ready and not ready if we had to, but as things are, we have a fairly even split for each submission date and I think we should maintain that if we can.

That being said, we're in trial runs right now anyway, so it really is a good time to try. And I would recommend trying it sooner than later, if enough people agree, because a month is a long time to wait to figure out that we don't like it one way or the other after all.

So - opinions? What do you guys think?

Reading Excuses / The Rules Of Reading Excuses
« on: November 17, 2008, 10:56:19 AM »
I just threw this together from what seemed to be the general consensus on the other thread, so tell me if there's anything I'm missing (or that you passionately disagree with) and I'll edit.

Deadlines: Sorry, you can't just submit whenever you feel like it. Instead, we'll hand you a submission deadline. If you don't make the submission deadline, we'll laugh at you. If you're late, we may not be able to read and critique it in a timely fashion.

Currently RE is experimenting with a new way of doing submissions. Instead of monthly submissions, we will have submission "applications". Submission dates will be Monday of any week. If you want to submit, you will apply by posting in the e-mail linked thread below by Saturday of the previous week. Chaos and I will choose who gets to submit based on who hasn't had critiques recently. There are few enough of us right now that all of those who want to will probably be able to submit, but pay attention to the Email/Submissions thread just in case.

Formatting: Do NOT post your submission to this forum. Instead, send your submission to everybody (just once, please!) on the Reading Excuses email list (available here). Attachments should be .doc, .rtf, or .pdf files (not .docx, not everyone can read those!); please use 1.5 or double spacing and a legible font. Courier and Times New Roman are manuscript standard.

After emailing, start a thread here on the Reading Excuses forum. Title the thread "date of submission - piece title - chapter number (if applicable)". You don't need to say much, it just gives us a place to go at it, and eliminates the possibility of three people starting the same thread at once. You'll start a new thread per each story or chapter so that threads don't get too huuuuuuge.

Length: We have come to a very democratic, very arbitrary decision that around 3500 words is a reasonable maximum per submission. This is a ballpark - if you want to submit a complete story or chapter that runs above this, go for it. But If you give us 50 pages to read all at once, we will whine. And throw stuff. And we might not read it all.

Genre: We're not putting any restrictions on genre (for now).  We'll still read literary fiction. You should bear in mind, though, that most of us are speculative fiction writers, getting together to critique mostly speculative fiction-y stuff. That doesn't mean we're not discerning readers, but if you're doing something wildly different you should probably take some of our comments with a grain of salt. (Well, an extra grain of salt.)

Content: We don't want to restrict content either. We do ask that when you email us a submission, you label it for Language, Drug Use, Violence,  or Sexual Content if necessary.

Ettiquette: Be fair (not nice). Don't be nasty, but do say what you think. And don't apologize every time you offer a criticism.

Say what's working exceptionally well as well as what isn't working at all.  If something isn't working, tell us why. Sometimes it's best to let the author figure out what to do. Sometimes specific suggestions help, but don't try to write someone's story for them.

Don't spend too much time critiquing grammar, punctuation, etcetera (unless the author asks for it for some reason). Focus on the big things.

You get what you give. If you skimp on critiquing our stuff, we'll skimp on yours. (We we realize that not everyone will be able to critique everybody's submission every time. That's fine. We do think it's reasonable for everyone to critique at least one manuscript for everyone they submit. Beyond that, do your level best to give as many critiques as you can without killing yourself over it.)

Defending your work against people's criticisms is generally not useful. Asking pointed questions is perfectly fine.

Finally, do NOT share someone else's story with anyone outside the group, unless you have their express permission to do so.

Reading Excuses / Email List + Submission Dates
« on: November 15, 2008, 09:35:21 PM »
Welcome to Reading Excuses! If you're not already sure what that is, Reading Excuses is an online critique group. Before you look at this thread, take a look at the Rules of Reading Excuses. Don't worry, we'll wait.

Read that? Excellent! Now you'll actually know what we're talking about when you see our submissions dates.

August 15:  cjhuitt, Mad Scientist, Chaos, Skyhunter, Asmodemon, Will, Guenwyvar
* No more submissions this week, folks! Seven is quite a few.

August 22: Robert, Hubay

To join the email list, please PM both me and Chaos with your email address and one of us will add you to the list.

When it's your turn to submit (and you'll know when it's your turn because you'll have posted on this thread to ask us, right?), you'll send your submission out to all [at] readingexcuses [dot] com

Make sure you format your submission appropriately according to the Rules thread linked above. For a slightly more digestible, but less detailed version of how to submit click here.

Want to know who's involved? Here's a list of everyone who participates, as they're known on TWG.
