Brandon Sanderson / Re: Nature of Shardblades? (Spoilers)
« on: May 24, 2011, 08:57:32 AM »
My impression was just that "dawn" was a term characters in the present day used to refer to really ancient things they didn't understand very well. I don't really have anything concrete to back that up, however, and I can't remember if any more reliable sources (death quotes, highstorm visions, etc.) ever used the term.

Haha, sorry, I didn't mean it like that. Mostly just affectionately mocking the fantasy artist tendency to have BIGGER WEAPONS ALL THE TIME

Oh, ugh... I really need to take that down. It's not as good as the designs I've produced more recently for Crafty Games.

For one thing, the sword is way too small. :)

I think we can all guess what's on Ink's mind. :P

Well, my pet theory at the moment is that the Heralds made a contract with Odium in order to protect the people of Roshar from his power. Maybe they gained power out of it, maybe they imposed limits and rules on his attacks (the Desolations) in exchange for possession of their souls, maybe it was something we can't even guess yet. And of course until we know more about Odium and what he wants we just can't even really come close to knowing. :)

I'm actually theorizing at the moment that the bargain the Heralds made for their power wasn't with Almighty. I don't really have a basis for that, except for the vague feeling that a deal made with a power for good shouldn't send its champions to a place of eternal torment for long periods of time.

Rather ironic place for a typo, really. XD

I've always thought of Sazed being 6' 7"ish (with Vin being 5' even (easiest, since she tells you it multiple times), Kelsier 6'3-4", Elend 6', etc), with an Asian skin-tone and facial structure (maybe Amazonian tribesmen, that seems to fit; I'm trying to think where I got my idea of him from...), combined with the elongation of limbs due to his castration and his thin build, would make him seem much taller than he really is. This is especially evident when you conisder that the average adult skaa male is probably 5'8" (or shorter), with nobleman maybe hitting 6'. We are thinking of our age, where the average human male is around 6' tall (plus or minus a few inches), when being 6'7" is an impressive height, but not freakishly so. This also puts Kelsier into perspective (if we base his height near my guesses), since he is close to a foot taller than the average skaa, taller even than nobleman, making him seem greater than a normal person. The spread of a few inches also fits Sazed's slight unease at standing near someone almost as tall as he is (can't remember what page it's on, but it is in FE somewhere...)

When he is fighting the koloss in WoA, the koloss is surprised because Sazed is even more muscular than the koloss itself, not because Saze is as tall as it (no Feruchemical metal that has been revealed will let you do that, I believe.) ;)

Also, first post! :o Prepare for much flinging of random/not-so-random ideas; I'm chock full of them!

Where does it say that Kelsier is a foot taller than the skaa?

Awesome! The original dialogue-only short story had me in stitches, and I'm really happy to see more of the same. I also think I need a t-shirt that says "misunderstood lexicographer."

More than anything I tend to associate being hawk-faced with a really intense stare and lowered eyebrows, which seems to fit Kelsier.

The boxings are called that because they  have a picture of Kredik Shaw - the Lord Ruler's "box" - on them. Beyond that, I don't remember reading anything specific about the coins. And Inkthinker, did you consider making the clips look like wedges of a larger coin rather than squares, if they are just pieces of a coin?

Okay guys and gals, I think Brandon has enough on his plate. Let's not add an apocalypse.  :P

Dangit!  That's what I was going to give him for Koloss head munching day!

You too? Darn it... Looks like another tie this year, then.

Not me! I started  the 1990's by getting floored by The Eye of the World, 21 years later we await the final book in what is my favorite series of all time.  I was 19 years old when I  began that journey, and its been a journey that I have truly been thankful for. All the years of speculation, and in-depth conversations with my dear fiends are cherished memories and fondly remembered  times. Sure I may have grumbled a few times in my 20's and early 30's, but looking back I truly have no grumbles, other than Mr Jordan had to leave us.  My other 40 something friends, that I turned onto the WOT years ago, and I were actually looking  at the conclusion of the WOT with a twinge of melancholia, that was until I read The Way of Kings, and I Knew, I had found the series to escort me to my 60's, and its a journey I can't wait to enjoy.

Hear, hear. :) I couldn't get into the Wheel of Time, probably because I started it too late, but I just can't wait to be swept up by this new series and see what it has in store for us. I look forward and imagine what the next ten years are going to be like, what the story's going to reveal, and what kind of changes in my life the Stormlight Archive is going to see me through, and I can't feel anything but excitement.

"Szeth didn't own a set of Plate himself, and didn't care to. His Lashings interfered with the gemstones that powered Shardplate, and he had to choose one or the other."

The Way of Kings US hardcover, page 29

Hm... I should pick up a paperback copy for this kind of thing when they come out. The pages on mine are starting to get a bit worn.

The time between Stormlight books will give us plenty of opportunity to memorize and theorize.

Yes! This will be the first series that I began the day it was released (being a younger person), and I'm excited to see it all the way through.  Wheel of Time is bad enough, and I only started that after the 10th book was released.

Same here. I've taken it as something of a personal obligation to become an obsessive mega-fan. X3
