You really gotta render that over something other than black.

Aside from that, I think you could do more with the description. I had interpreted his coat as being pure white (kinda like what Elend wears, only more exaggereated), with the pure black vest and trousers underneath it.

From page 571 of my paperback edition:

Quote
He was dressed in a black and white uniform somewhat like a nobleman's suit, but far more exaggerated. The coat reached all the way to his feet, and trailed behind him as he walked. His vest wasn't colored, but pure black, though it was accented with brilliant white markings. [...] his fingers glittered with rings, the symbols of his power.
I'm so much stronger than you, the rings proclaimed, that it doesn't matter if I wear metal[/i]

Of course, we know now that they're also Feruchemical batteries

Handsome, with jet-black hair and pale skin, the Lord Ruler was tall, thin, and confident. And he was young- younger than Vin would have expected, even younger than Kelsier.

For some reason I can't quite find a backup for just now, I also interpreted his hair as long.

*sigh*... sooo many jokes for that. But Brandon's an all-ages kinda writer, so I treat his boards as an all-ages environment.

Oh, ugh... I really need to take that down. It's not as good as the designs I've produced more recently for Crafty Games.

For one thing, the sword is way too small. :)

That's pretty cool. Koloss swords could be bigger... really, they're an opportunity to be like, Final Fantasy big.

Of course they don't have to be interpreted that way. But a full-grown koloss is about 10-12 feet tall and they're swords are large even to them, I would say a 7-8 foot sword length is entirely reasonable. Those appear to be about 5 ft, which is extra large for human scale but a toothpick to something that more or less looks like a deep-dark-blue version of The Incredible Hulk with the skin splitting around the muscles.

You're right, I stand corrected.

Though every suit of shardplate is unique, so any suit may differ from another in various ways. But yeah, there should probably be something like a traditional eyeslit or holes or something in the faceplate, if for no other reason but that you'd like to be able to keep seeing if the gems crack and your suit goes dead.

I'm sure. I don't understand.

Shardplate helms have faceplates that can be lifted or removed. Brandon doesn't really clearly describe them other than contextually (paraphrasing "Dalinar slammed down his faceplate", "Andolin lifted his faceplate to breathe", etc) so you have a good bit of freedom in how you want to interpret it.

Especially when you get into the magical contexts, because I think that unlike a real plate where you have to look through a slot or pinholes, the face of the shardplate helm goes all smoky transparent when he brings it down. Ideally, this means the exterior of it can look like almost anything, since the issue of vision/protection is moot.

Virtual environments allow for new rules on what can and cannot be done, and how easily.

I made the switch to digital drawing about 5 years ago, and I still can't believe some of the stuff I can do now. Undo alone is a trick that would have made any professional illustrator 20 years ago crap his drawers. Layering adds an outrageous amount of control. Texturing is a whole new art form, it bears practically no relation to what that term would have meant before digital painting became mainstream.

It's no surprise that the same thing is happening with digital reading. Thanks mostly to the internet, the factors are finally in alignment; sufficient saturation of content (the Net) + familiarity with the format (because everyone's gotten used to reading on a screen thanks to the Net) + affordable, effective platforms (kindles, nooks, smartphones, touchpads). It's been projected for decades, but it couldn't work until those factors aligned, and now it's finally happening.

The ability to conduct keyword searches alone places the digital text file over the physical book in terms of practicality. Not to mention that you can just about hold the entire Library of Congress in your back pocket (and that qualifier won't be necessary in another five years).

Physicality will hold more value. Quality of content will probably lessen overall, but when it's good it will likely be very, very good... it'll need to be, in order to survive. It'll cost more to own a real book, but maybe less to own a virtual one.

I'm still waiting for someone to start offering a free e-book with the purchase of a real one. Or at least a discount 2-pack.

Kelsier is described as "tall", but I don't think it ever says exactly how tall or compares him to anyone in particular.

once again off topic here, but i think you would be good with cover art, ink.

and i too pictured him as tall and black. the earring thing throws me off a bit though.

Terrismen do have a darker skin-tone than skaa. But the range of tones across the entire human race is more homogenous than ours thanks to the Lord Ruler's eugenics.

Aside from Isaac Stewart, who's contributing work on the maps and symbols, I'm the only artist on the Mistborn RPG. Cover and interiors, this part of the book is mine to carry. They made a blog post about it some time ago, but I hadn't really said much about it myself because I'm still in the middle of the work.

I really hope that's good news to most of you...  :-\

There's a certain sensation that comes with reading the last page of a good book, and closing that cover... it's hard to express, but it's not a bad feeling exactly... quite the opposite. Maybe bittersweet, sometimes?

"koloss"

Sazed gets koloss-sized when he taps his metalmind, but normally he's at the high end of 6-7 feet. Not freakishly tall, but he stands out in a crowd.

Sorry if I haven't been back to ask for more help guys, but things are proceeding along quite nicely. There's going to be a good bit of Mistborn artwork coming from my corner towards the end of this year.

Doubtful that they're arched. Most of them would probably be flat and roughly buttressed along the bottom.

Chasms get thinner as you go out to the edges, wider as you go in towards the center. If you model a carry-bridge, remember that about half the length of it remains on the side it's pushed from, for balance.

Nimoy, sure. I can see that. I think of him a bit more in terms of Sazed though, the long features and the slender hands.

I actually have good ref from Brandon on Sazed, but here's a question... is there any example of him in the text wearing spectacles? I have some idea of him in glasses, but I  think that's might something I've just made up in my head with an impression of him as being scholarly.

The Mtn Dew commercial is somewhat helpful. Narrow chin, sharp cheekbones, a thin roman nose, that's more or less what I had in place. A little bit like a younger Gabriel Byrne, I suppose.

I'll run the rough past Peter and Brandon and see if I'm in the ballpark.

Sometimes it's just useful to know that I'm thinking the same things other readers are.
