Brandon Sanderson / Re: Mistborn on Top 100 SFF novels of All Time!
« on: August 19, 2011, 06:41:03 AM »
With a number as big 100, it's almost impossible to reach any sort of consensus. Especially when you include both SF and F in a single category, which given the depth of either genre in today's market is a bit of crap. I'm pretty sure I can come up with a list of 100 brilliant SF and 100 awesome F novels without the need for much crossover.

That being said, Mistborn is a little hard to categorize. It's got swords and magic, but it also takes place on an alien world trapped at a near-industrial phase of development for nearly a millenia. That blend that he works so deftly is one of the things that makes our boy stand out.

I'm gonna guess that Brandon's probably flattered by the compliment, but that he doesn't take it particularly seriously. I figure we fans should probably do the same. The most we ought to expect from something like this is that it might swell our ranks a bit.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Alloy of Law Excerpt (Updated with Ch3)

Don't forget that a speed bubble lasts, to an outside observer, for a fraction of a second. It slows down time to the perception of the people inside it, but outside the bubble time proceeds normally.

For instance, when Wax and Wayne had their little side conversation during the interview with Steris, the bubble lasted for several minutes on the inside, but on the outside it was barely a second or so (look to the left, look back. That's how long it lasted).

So to an outside observer, a bubble is a *blip*. Not a lot of time for people on the outside to try and push things in or pull them out.

Oooohhh... I see.

Hm. Interesting.

The original mistwraiths were human too. I always thought they should reproduce like amoebas when they got too big, but I think Brandon has denied that.

Right, the First Generation, formed from the other Terrismen that accompanied Rashek. But by the time we got to the trilogy, we had up to a Third Generation, right? Aren't those all from uplifted mistwraiths?

How the heck do we get new mistwraiths, anyhow?

What I found most interesting was that koloss can apparently breed with humans. I guess it makes sense, since the original founders of the species were once human. Though that's interesting - I wonder if that means kandra would be able to have children with humans, or were they too thoroughly changed?

I don't think so... a Kandra imitating a human is still (in actuality) a conglomeration of reforming muscle-sacs surrounding a skeleton. I don't think they have the capability to form the actual internal reproductive organs (gonads, or a uterus) needed to create another human being. The original kandra were human, but every generation since is an Awakened mistwraith, right?

Koloss, on the other hand, are more basically magically mutated humans. They presumably have all the organs and such they had when they're changed over by the spiking, and so it's not much of a stretch to imagine that they can breed both with each other and with un-mutated humanity.

How do you pronounce that double "k" in "Kkoloss"?

It means you can copy and past the address link from the bar at the top of your browser into your post here, and that will allow us to check out the work you posted to DA... but I don't think you can have the image hosted on DA appear here in the forums.

You see, if they're hosting the image then they would pay for the bandwidth every time someone here looked at it. They would rather you go to the DA site to see the image, so they don't allow in-line posting.

If you want your work to appear in the post here, you'll need another hosting option (best case, your own corner of a server somewhere on the net. If you have your own website, then you can do that).

So far as I know, you can't hyperlink an image from DA to a forum. You can post a link to your DA page, though.

The latest in Jim Butcher's "The Dresden Files" was pretty dang brilliant. If you only know the series through that awful TV adaptation, I highly advise giving it a chance... the show had pretty much nothing in common with the books, aside from the names. They changed most everything else about it, from the main character to the settings, and completely failed to hold up the wit or the characterizations of the novels.

Currently reading the second in the 'Gaunt's Ghosts" omnibuses (omnibi?), set in the Warhammer 40K universe. Good military sci-fi with a rich setting. Also simultaneously reading "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency", which I somehow missed... I've read "The Long, Dark Tea-time of the Soul" at least three times, but somehow never read the other.

And Larry Corriea has a third "Monster Hunter" novel. I've panned the first in that series as a Mary Sue, but the second was much improved and I'm looking forward to seeing if he can maintain that upward arc.

You are! It's this one!!

 ;D

I also did quite a lot of the broadsheet work in Alloy of Law. Who knows what we'll get up to next?

Thanks!

I only get to show work that's already been released to the public. The cover has been shown by Crafty, so I can show the cover art.

So, at long last, it finally comes.

http://www.crafty-games.com/content/mistborn-adventure-game-pre-order-details?utm_source=bsand&utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=magpre

From the page:

Based on the best-selling novels by Brandon Sanderson and powered by an all new story-driven rules system, the Mistborn Adventure Game lets you explore, command, or liberate the oppressed world of Scadrial, battle the Lord Ruler’s Inquisitors, and master the primal forces of Allomancy, Feruchemy, and Hemalurgy. It features new official fiction from Mr. Sanderson himself and loads of never-before-seen material, making it the ultimate resource for fans of the novels and those who want to experience the Final Empire firsthand.

The book also features about 30 illustrations drawn by yours truly. I busted some hump to try and match well with Brandon's written words, and he and Peter have been pretty good about keeping me on the right track. I think if you liked the work I've done before, you'll be happy with what I've done here.

I hope you check it out!

Ahhhh... I'm not sure that all the moral lessons of Wayne are entirely suitable for children. Dude steals pretty much out of pure habit. He "replaces" the things he steals, but he's got funny ideas about equal value.

The agelessness might be a side effect that they can't control...  they can suppress the volountary stuff, but like the other physical enhancements, it's not something they can suppress (at least not entirely).

Ah, pity. I figured it was a weekly paper, for some reason.

But... but it's called The Elendel Daily. C'mon!!

My first job as an illustrator was as an editorial cartoonist for a small-town weekly. Oh, how we come full circle...
