Rants and Stuff / Re: Why "No offense"

In that respect I completely agree fRR. People often use is as an excuse to be rude and I agree that its not needed.

Good for you Bookstore Guy! At least your honest.

I don't know, for some reason I don't have an issue with the phrase. I do however side with ryos here. The useage shows that there is awareness of possible offense. Why is that a problem? The speaker is aware that what they are about to say may be offensive. Its that easy. The phrase isn't intended to be irritating it just ends up being that way. In the end I think that's the problem. Its use irritates people because some people find it lazy or careless while others just find it pointless.

I guess the real answer to the initial question of "Why no offense?" is simple. There are an assortment of reasons. It can be used genuinely by intelligent people (against what some people believe) and it can be used as a catch all "don't blame me for being rude" type of statement. As with many things people say, it in itself is nothing but a phrase. How about if someone said with complete sincerity at the beginning or end of a statement "no offense intended and I apologize if any was taken"? I'm sure that would be better received but in the habit of most Americans we tend to cut things short. Yeah I guess its cold but again I guess this more of one of those "deal with it" type of things anyway.

It almost feels like some people are taking offense to this conversation. Kidding.

I think that people who use the phrase "no offense" aren't doing it out of laziness. I agree that it used as a sort of disclamer. More of a "be advised" sort of warning that what the person is about to say is probably going to be offensive in some way to some people. I don't think theres anything wrong with that.

The term alone doesn't mean that outright disregard for other peoples feelings will ensue, all it means is that the person talking is cognizant of the fact that what they are saying could offend. So what? Just because what I'm saying could be offensive doesn't mean it shouldn't be discussed. I personally use the phrase when I am aware that I will be offensive. Its kind of like starting my offensiveness off with some preliminary defense. It's not really a bad way to go when you really don't want to offend. At least that way it gives you a good starting point if the need should arise for you to further explain your wish not to be offensive. I'm generally not going to talk to strangers in an offensive way (for the most part). So the majority of the time you may say something involving "no offense" would be with people who you are at least acquainted with. If they decide to take what you have to say, get offended and then let that affect them then whatever. I personally am not going to go cry.

Well put Hero. Its up to both parties, both the possibly offended and the possible offender. As long as they are able to have an adult conversation than offense can be avoided. The issue is that more often than not people aren't able to have adult conversations with others.

I tend to be a bit blunt at times and I find that I have a hard time realizing when I'm doing it. I agree that "No offense" can be constuctive and insultiung. Personally I use the phrase all the time. Sometimes people take offense either way but as long as you dont really mean to offend someone then you can further explain yourself to them.

Yeah well you weren't elected god by me so don't worry about me missing church. Secondly I'm not sure if your aware but wilson seems to be a fairly "good" politician. I'm going to go with the "good" representing her competency at being a politician and leave it at that.

To be honest Chaos, your campain for HoA left something to be desired.

Wow I want that coffee right now! My mouth is watering just thinking about it. Just think of the aroma it would create while brewing. Just walking into my kitchen in the morning would be ecstasy.

First of all kaz I would be weary of my actions if I were you. You may find it difficult to stand alone when Chaos leaves you hanging. At least Andrew had the sense to offer his services with the possibility of trading sides. That leaves his options open. He could backstab Chaos or use the statement to get our support and then backstab us. In the end you may be setting your self up for a lonely existence.

Chaos Chaos Chaos. I would have thought that you were intelligent enough to understand your situation. In the right circumstances our friendly little politician could have more power than any god. Maybe not in the literal sense but in a very real way she alone could defeat you or at least your influence on people. Not only that but this "lesser mercenary" is still quite victorious so until I level or somehow you become even more victorious I doubt you have the power to defeat me. Take a little time and chew on that.

I think I'm with Andrew here. His plan has some merit, and I would love to watch your downfall. It may be quite amusing and I have been waiting a long time for it.

No worries, I'm sure my attorney leipreacháns will be able to handle your ninjas without problems. It would seem that wich is holy to some does not have to be so for others. You can attempt to continue this folly if you wish, be aware that your progress on the matter will be little if any.

First of all, wilson your funny. While i did intend to be literal about Chaos surrounding himself with mercs I was not attempting to be literal while talking of my self. The coalition was always about supporting eachother in the only ways possible. If you cant raise a weapon to aid then I will happily welcome some twisted plot only a politician could devise.

Chaos- I have no problem with your self delusion of "DevineRight". Feel free to attempt in scarring off your opponents with empty threats and half truths. I already lack any fear of you so a statement such as your last will do nothing but show your own fear. I mean if you did have "DevineRight" then you shouldn't fear and therefor have no need of spreading it around.

And now I begin hunting. Thanks Andrew.

EDIT: I read the first paragraph and decided to re-read Kinfe of Dreams before I went any further. You know, to refresh a little. I figured it would help me get back into the Wheel before the releas. Thanks though, I've been putting of the re-read and this is the motivation I've been looking for.

Well its good to see that the roots of the coalition are still strong. I also would have to agree with wilson here. I mean seeing how you lead "mercenaries" then they probably wouldn't be to hard for a "victorious mercenary" right? I'm sure we could work out a successful assassination if needed. Some fairly important people have been assassinated in the past so don't feel too secure Chaos. I will most likely bide my time. I doubt that I will ever be ahead of Chaos again but I do think I need to get back to the forums more so I wont be left too far in the dust.

Be wary Chaos for I do not fight alone. While you may surround yourself with unknown mercs of little value, I do not.

I like how you put that Chaos. Based solely on reaction theres almost no question. HoA did slow down for a while near the end when Vin was captive and before Urteau burned. I think the chaos that followed Kelsiers death was my favorite thing Brandon has written. The radical change from, Survivor leading the way to, OH SH**! was awesome. Its almost like from the moment Kell decided to save the captives in the square all the way to the last page there was this amazing culmination of unexpected and amazing events that kind of set the tone for the whole trilogy. Kell died so no one was safe, TLRs dead so all that we knew was at an end. All that was left was the rest of the crew and the rest was a question mark. A surprisingly satisfying question mark.

I find it amusing how you don't like Zane. You always seemed like a Zane type of guy.

Why not dethrone a god? Its not like is hasn't happened before. The democratic election may have been in your favor but there is also precedent for those who are chosen by the people to fall as well.

Be weary Chaos. You may be ahead of me in level but Andrew brings up a good point. Without Ook your nothing! (lets just over look the fact that your higher in level for now). And even if he did step in whats to stop a good old home grown assassination?

Ook- You were always the one to bring us back to earth. I agree that the levels earned here are "unearned". Doesn't mean we didn't have fun earning them it just means there wasn't much else involved in gaining them

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Making a mistcloak!
« on: September 04, 2009, 07:29:42 PM »
Now I didn't mean that you should construct a ghillie suit. I was only saying that you could use some of the same techniques to construct a good mist cloak. The main thing in constructing a ghillie suit is a base of netting. This allows the maker to tie strips of material to the different parts of the net. The strips can be varying sizes even allowing the ones near the top to be longer. This way the tassels overlap eachother giving the garment camouflage. If you take a cloak then attach a section of netting to the back nearly equal to the size of the cloak then this will give you a good platform to work with. The cloak could be dropped just as easy as any other and it would allow for individual tassels to be torn free without much effort. It would probably be a good idea to allow the netting to go over the shoulders to the front of the cloak as well. this would help break up the outline of the person wearing it. This is just an idea. I haven't done this so I don't know. But thinking about it I think it could be done fairly easily and quickly given the correct materials.
