Rants and Stuff / Re: General Religious discussion
« on: June 02, 2009, 12:06:04 AM »
Hey, thanks for sharing Frog!

I was a little confused over your first paragraph. So you believe we lived in heaven before coming to earth and only live on earth once? What exactly do you mean by God being the father of our spirits? Does this mean something different than being our Father in heaven?

And I was also a bit confused in your paragraph about Jesus Christ. What exactly do you mean by the term "spirit brother"?
I have also heard that Mormons do not believe the Son is completely God, while still having taken a human nature to Himself. I know you don't believe in the Trinity, but you could clarify on this? Do you believe that God the Father created the Son?

I believe in the Trinity -- God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, three persons in one nature, and that the Son is two natures in one person. I believe in God's omniscience, omnipotence, and omnipresence. I believe that God created human beings sinless, but that because of the sins of Adam and Eve we are now corrupted by sin.

God's justice demands that sin be paid for. He did not have to save anyone but because of His love he chose to save anyone who would believe and trust in His Son, Jesus Christ. He was fully man so that He could fully represent us before God, and fully God so that He could act as God's representative to us.

I believe in justification by faith and not by works. I guess you could say if our sin is a giant pit standing between us and God, the Cross is more of a bridge than a landfill. We can't do anything to fill the pit; any good works we try to fill the pit with is ultimately not enough to save us.

I believe that sanctification is a direct outgrowth of justification. God calls on us to become more and more Christlike, not to earn our salvation but because its closer to how things ought to be.

I go to a non-denominational church. I don't know to what degree Mormons are in tune with Christian public figures, but to give you a better idea of what we believe my senior pastor is Joshua Harris (the guy who wrote I Kissed Dating Goodbye ) or you can visit http://www.covlife.org/about/beliefs

So I thought we had some good discussions going on here at one point and I really enjoined them. I guess I'll try to jump-start it again with a question, directed at the LDS members here:

What are some of the big doctrines that differentiate Mormonism from other Christian denominations? I understand that most likely not all Mormons believe the same thing, I just mean in general. For example, what do you guys believe about God? The person of Jesus Christ, his divinity and his humanity? The doctrine of sin?

Also even if you're not Mormon feel free to jump in :D

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Kelsier and Ruin *Spoilers*

Remember, not everyone needs to be spiked to hear Ruin. Also people who already have a tenuous grip on sanity can hear him faintly. And while Kelsier is not quite insane, I don't think his mental state was ever the same after Mare died and he Snapped in Hathsin.

Nice! something about the face reminds me of the actress who played Lucy in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
Your right. I really like the painitng though. It takes real skill to do things like that.

Oh absolutely! It's nice to see someone's idea of Vin when she's not in the middle of a fight. It's very peaceful, almost sad.

Personally I don't have anything against Paolini. He has his flaws, (of which there are many, granted) but he also has his merits. I find it very hard to connect much of Star Wars' plot to his third book. Of course, that may be because almost nothing happened in that book, but hey.
His magic system...I didn't immediately connect it to the Earthsea trilogy. Its been too long since I've read it for me to tell if they are similar.

It's kind've a toss-up. I really love Root Beer/ Birch Beer, but sometimes I'm just not in the mood for something that sweet. In that case I will generally go for a Sprite. If I don't want a Sprite, I will always take a Pepsi over a Coke.
And recently I've really been enjoying Orange Soda, though in the past I've detested it.

Alright, I'll lay it out for you.

There is a young farmboy dreaming of adventure, living with his uncle on the outskirts of the Empire. An aged, mysterious storyteller informs him that once, the land was protected by heroes, guardians who used magic to defend it. This young hero learns that his father was once one of these warriors, as was the mysterious storyteller; and he can become one as well.
But- oh, no! Our young hero returns to his farm to find it in ruins and his uncle killed, by no less than the forces of the evil Empire. He swears vengeance against this Empire and its dastardly Emperor, leaving his homeland to travel with the old storyteller. This storyteller gives his life for our young farm boy, protecting him from an attack. Along the way, he rescues a princess from the Empire and joins the Rebels, leading them against a last-minute attack on their hidden base.
In Volume Two, our hero discovers that his father was actually the Emperor's right-hand man, his most trusted servant: his apprentice, if you will. He also learns that he has a long-lost twin.
He discovers that the late storyteller's plan was to further his training with the last surviving magic user, a former teacher. This aged and crippled man lives the life of a hermit in the forest, but is still able to teach our young hero much. However, at the last minute our hero decides to complete his training later and save his friends, vowing to return.

I could go on, but there wouldn't be much point. Eragon is Star Wars. I read the first two books and really enjoyed them. It was only after I read the third one and was incredibly disappointed that I began to actually analyze the story and realized how familiar it really was.

Maybe Shard hasn't read the third book. But really, Eragon is just Star Wars plus dragons.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Others writing Wheel of Time?

I guess I could see it working, but I wouldn't be interested in reading them.  To be honest though, I don't see it happening. Star Wars is a much bigger/ more popular franchise than WoT.

Like you said its pretty rough and hard to tell what is going on. However I really like the idea you have for flaring! I think that for it to work the entire piece will have to be very exaggerated and and messy, almost like a comic book. For example it would be out of place in the piece you showed us before with Vin. But from the style above, it looks like you already knew that. Nice work!

Dan Wells / Re: German Cover!

It does look good.  :D I kinda like it better than the other version.

I absolutely agree. The UK version definitely looks like its going for a more YA market, but still to me it looks very...simplistic. Just a flat red with some claw marks to spice it up...boring imo. The German cover looks like pure awesome.
