Sorry if this has already been answered Brandon, I'm still working on getting caught up with the forums, I've been busy, sick, and dealing with identity theft! :o

But could you give us a short guide on how Spooks dialect is spoken?

I would actually love to see this as well.  I think there have been a few sort-of explanations in other threads, but I'd love to see something a bit more detailed.

It would be so much fun to talk in the Spook's street slang with my friends.
That was my thought as well. ha ha. Everyone would be clueless!

And the fun begins!  ;D

Wasing the having of fun of the do?

At our book signing, we asked about Spook's dialect, and got a very basic lesson. The dialect was designed to confuse outsiders, and it does that through use of key words, along with a bunch of semi-meaningless words. I think most if not all of the key words end in -ing.

So, "Wasing the where," could be "Where are/were/will you (be),"  though it would probably be more like, "Wasing the where of having the had?" (Where did you have that? Or something close to that.)

Hope that helps.

Okay, so a few months ago I spent some time doing a render of The Lord Ruler in his throne room, but I got about this far before I ran into difficulties and put the project on hiatus. I'm thinking of starting it up again though, so I thought I'd post what I've got and get some feedback.

So, from here, I'm going to inlay some of the metal symbols all over the place. I need to rework those fires in the background, but for now they're just there to cast shadows. I plan on putting a headpiece in that weird little gap on the throne, and of course The Lord Ruler himself eventually. (And some big old caption-y text of something cool. Maybe "'Kill him,' God said, 'He's really not that important.'" from Zane in Mistborn:The Well of Ascension.)

But for now what I'd really like feedback on is the glass wall. Does that look believable to you guys? Is it easily recognizable and such? If I don't get any feedback on that, I think I'll leave it just the way it is, but I'd like to know if it fits as well for everyone else as it does for me.

Anyways, thanks for any input you guys have.

Hello.

Read through your entire post, agreed with most of it, enjoyed the other perspectives and whatnot.

Then I got to your signature and fell into bits of laughter.

Thanks for making my day. (And I promise I'll try to get more adequate sleep in the future.)

Whoops. Thanks Chaos.

And it was mostly Issac who set up the language, as Brandon didn't even know about the phonetic pairings and such until the signing when we asked them these questions.

But Hangul sounds familiar, so meh . . . I know it is based off of a real-world language, but I can't remember which. Are there any languages  similar to those that have 23 characters?

80
Actually, the symbols in Hero of Ages are just further regressed characters of the same old language.

It was one of the questions we asked Brandon and Issac at the Sam Weller's signing, and we were told that these symbols are supposedly another thousand years before Alendi's time. So where in "today's" world The Lord Ruler has regulated script to make crisp strong writing, way back when it looked like this flowing artistic hand. I think it's actually quite fun to go through and compare how the symbols have progressed.

Another fact is that supposedly these 23 or so characters that can be found at the beginning of each chapter form an actual writable, speakable, language, so if/when Brandon and Issac ever get around releasing it we could all be super-nerds and start writing in "Mistborn language." (Scadrian? Scadrialsh? Scadrialanese?) In addition to that, the letters which correspond to the paired metals also have paired sounds. So the symbol for iron may be a soft "b" sound (As in boy.) and steel would be a soft "p" sound, (as in chop.) because they're both made the same way.

And in relation to your question, koan, I know at least the position of the dot can indicate if it is a pushing or pulling metal. (Inside the circles for pushing, outside the circles for pulling.)

81
And since they were created by Ruin and Preservation, they have the seeds of the Three Metallic Arts in them--though without anyone among them having burned Larasium, Allomancers would have been very rare in their population and full Mistborn unheard of.

Now the real question is, what does the alloy of Larasium do, and what is it called? (Takes away Allomancy maybe?)

And I'm really suspecting something atium is "the adopted child" of the metal circle. It doesn't quite belong.

Okay, in a previous post you just said:

Another question, Brandon. Would the Three Metallic Arts operate in other worlds, or are they direct results of Ruin and Preservation and thus only operate in Scadriel?

Okay, back to answering spoilers.  (Or, in the case of this post, half-answering them.)

To use Feruchemy or Allomancy in almost every case, one must have the right spiritual and genetic codes, imprinted upon people during the creation of Scadrial by Ati and Leras.  To use Hemalurgy, one must first have someone with these right spiritual and genetic codse, then take the power from them.  Other people on other worlds are not going to simply discover the Three Metallic Arts by accident.

Ati and Leras. Well, the metal Lerasium creates Mistborn, so if that is the Preservation-metal, thus, Preservation's true name is Leras.

I pondered this for a few minutes and then it occurred to me: of course Ati is Ruin. His metal, after all, is atium. Ati for atium, Leras for Larasium.

Ruin, thus, is Ati, and Preservation is Leras. We have their names now.

Grr. As I was saying before my post got eaten . . . .

This makes me wonder what the alloy of Lerasium is called and what it does. . . .

And I'm more and more sure that atium and malatium aren't really supposed to be on that metal circle. . .

I like to think of it from Brandon's perspective: why, if it's the third book of the trilogy with many already established characters, would Brandon ever introduce one of the main characters and then later, somehow not have him actually be the main character? It's unnecessarily convoluted from a storytelling perspective.

Though... I was caught off-guard because of the facial hair, but there are too many things that point to him being Elend than him not being Elend. White cape, just like from MB2, same hair style from MB2, and most of all, he essentially completes the story arc from MB2 about him becoming king. He is the emperor now, and now he acts like it.

The improvement is extraordinary. Elend, I think, has always been my favorite character (series-wise, at least. Kelsier was the favorite for MB1), but now he is even better than I could have imagined. He's a powerful leader, the only thing that has really happened to him is that he's grown. The world is falling into chaos, and he is doing what he has to do to keep it alive. I like to think of it from the perspective of his last line in MB2, where he says, "We are going to survive." Obviously, he is doing it this way--without that pesky "ideals" business--to survive. Already, before we even get into his viewpoint, I can see what Elend's internal conflicts will be in the book: he is going to struggle with trying to keep his ideals (or restore them) in the face of unimaginable chaos.

This is Elend, I am positive of it. He's just stronger now.

Remember, though, that Statlin City is probably more like one of the Lord Ruler's storehouses than the hidden atium supply. Recall from the preview chapter in the second edition paperback of MB1 (the one from Spook's viewpoint) that Elend was going after cities that had these storehouses.

In fact, I believe I just figured out why Vin isn't with Elend: she is commanding the koloss army to conquer places with the storehouses. As to why Elend cannot control koloss, I do not have a sufficient answer for you.

The Hero of Ages, though... wow. Everything is just phenomenal.

Quote
I am, unfortunately, the Hero of Ages.

My first impression, here, is that the Hero is no one we've known before, but an unknown. However, it could simply be here that it is Rashek writing believing himself to be the Hero.

Either way, it is purely phenomenal.

I think it's that one.

MWAHAHAHA!

I'm just saying that because evil laughs are cool.

Also Reaves, when you finish, move into the main Spoiler topic at the top of the Brandon Sanderson forum. That's the one where we talk about spoilers, and also get feedback from Brandon himself. I'm surprised, really, that he's responded to the vast majority of inquiries already, what with the Book Tour and all.

Someone should give that guy a Gold Star for Being Awesome and Caring For the Fans.

Incredibly off-topic, but does anyone know what kind of pressure it would take to start reacting gold in the same way elements are reacted in stars? That'd be a lot of gold.

Also, I was just noticing that gold is a very "valuable" Allomantic metal? It's alloyed with both electrum and malatium, on top of being a base metal itself.

And to give this topic a smidgen of on-topickness, I believe I was the first to mention what Ruin was looking for, but I had it in the wrong location/form. Chaos got that one right.  (And technically that's a spoiler, because we didn't find out Ruin was looking for something until one of the sample Hero of Ages chapters, but it is in the prologue.)

And BWAHAHAHAHA! End of post trickery!

Brandon, I believe in one of Sazed's epigraphs, he actually called it "Adonasium" rather than what you are referring to here, which is "Adonalsium". I'm thinking that's just a typo, right?

I don't suppose you could tell us which book series of yours will tell us more about Adonalsium, would you? You know, just so us theorizers on the forum know when to properly theorize about these things...

And people were asking what we'd have to do in this forum when there weren't any other wild theories to discuss. Now you tell us we've barely scratched the surface.

I knew you had Hoid popping up everywhere, but only realized that after reading Warbreaker and the first few Liar of Partinel chapters. I had no idea you had so many other connections between these series. Now I'm guessing that ALL your adult fantasy novels exist in the same universe (though...I'm not sure about Way of Kings...I need to check it later...). (I'm guessing Alcatraz and Scribbler are not connected.)

You can count on me to make an overly complex theory of everything that has little basis in reality. I'm good at that.

Another question, Brandon. Would the Three Metallic Arts operate in other worlds, or are they direct results of Ruin and Preservation and thus only operate in Scadriel?
Well, I guess this means that the proofreaders did not add the "L" when I marked the error on the manuscript. (sigh). Yes, the correct spelling is adonalsium. I will try to get this fixed for the paperback, but I've been trying to get that blasted steel/iron error in the back of book one fixed for two years now. . .

If it helps, Sazed would probably under-pronounce the "L" as that letter, like in Tindwyl's name, is said very softly in terris.

As for your other question, you will have to wait and see. Now, you could search my old books for clues, but I would caution against this. While there are hints in these, they are not yet cannon. Just as I changed how things were presented in the mistborn books during editing, I would have fixed a lot in these books during revision. Beyond that, reading them would give big spoilers for books yet to be released. White sand, dragonsteel, and way of kings in particular are going to be published some day for almost certain. (though in very different forms). Aether of night should be safe, as should final empire prime and mistborn prime, though of those three, only aether is worth reading, and then only barely. (it is still pretty bad).

I will post more later. They are calling my flight. (I'm at LAX)

Random thought time:

If Allomancy (A power of Preservation.) feels "right" to Vin while she's in the mists, (Areas where Preservation's power is concentrated.) would a power not of Preservation feel "wrong" to her? Like perhaps a certain mysterious planet-hopping "beggar" who is humming to himself one misty night?

Hmmmm . . .

85
I can see it now. An army of Koloss and Steel Inquisitors taking on the city of Elantris.

So I have a theory question. If Hoid is in Warbreaker, is there a Shard?

86
Well, I'd sure pay to see it in theaters!  ;)

To be more serious, I think this series--particularly the first book--is quite cinematic.  I'd love to sell movie rights on it, assuming I can find the right people to work with.  So if you have any contacts, let me know.

I have a camcorder; we could toss dummies through the air to simulate aerial combat. Who wants metal spikes pounded into their skull?

Ooh, me me me!

And I can provide some props . . . I expect to be 2/3rds of the way done with my Mistcloak by tonight.

Now for more questions.

1. Do certain aspects of the Shards (Cognitive, Physical, Spiritual) correspond to specific states of matter? (Solid, liquid, vapor?) If so, which ones are which?

2. Do the symbols at the head of each section and book relate to anything, or were they just chosen at random?

3. Whatever happened to the bag of atium beads Zane buried? Are they still there?

Also, it's kind of ironic that Miyabi was at least partly right about his planar theory and none of us believed it.

You've also seen one other manifestation like this....
Such as...this?
Quote
The "lake" was barely ten feet deep—more like a pool. Its water was a crystalline blue, and Raoden could see no inlets or outlets.
If that's what you're hinting at...I never thought of the connection before! I just kept thinking of Aether of Night, and never thought of this pool at all.

I'm also thinking that the Dor in Elantris is another Shard of Adonasium. Certainly in the Elantris world, where the Dor came from is rather ambiguous, which I expected it would be. Of course, if other Shards of Adonasium do exist, the Dor could have come from that source.

If that's the case, what's the counter-Dor Shard?

Here's my questions from the book:

1. Preservation can fuel Allomancy, (Minus Atium.) but can Ruin fuel Hemalurgy? (Or Atium?) And could Sazed fuel all three Metallic Arts?

2. Are Atium and the External Temporal Pulling metal really the same?

3. Are there any Allomantic metals we have not seen yet, besides Chromium and Nicrosil?

4. Does every metal have a Feruchemical and Hemalurgic property? If not, are there metals which have Feruchemical or Hemalurgic properties which do not have Allomantic ones?

5. When Vin is feeling out The Lord Ruler's final message plate, she finds a circle with a dot at the center. What does that mean?

I think that's all for now. I'm sure I'll have more soon though.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Hero of Ages signings photos

I enjoyed it, but it was much, much smaller than the Provo one. (There were only like a dozen or two people.) It was kind of amusing, the difference in sizes, as I was one of two people who got their books signed at Sam Weller's and I was number 528 to get a numbered book.

I arrived during Brandon's reading, stayed for some Q&A, and then we went up for the signing. I really liked the closer atmosphere at this one, it gave us all a chance to speak our minds.

Well, I got the book last night at the Sam Weller's signing, and just finished it.

With the memories fresh in my mind, I can only agree with VegasDev. These books have the power to touch people. To make them trust more in the world, to change their lives for the better.

Seventy years from now, when I'm either old or dead, I hope my children, and their children, and even their children will still read these books. They contain messages that do not dull over time.

I would like to humbly thank Brandon for sticking to his dreams and giving us these stories.
