Brandon Sanderson / Re: WoK: Shalan - near end of book **SPOILERS**
« on: September 15, 2010, 07:02:14 PM »
Perhaps her "missing" brother had a soulblade?

The man who had a shardplate and shardblade that Kaladin killed was Veden, the same as Shallan, and that happened a nearly year ago, Nan Helaran vanish "over a year ago" and their father had proclaimed him dead...
On page 701 Amaram speaking of the shardbearer being in that enemy force says "the ghost bloods grow more bold", the ghostbloods is the group that sent Kabsal to kill Jasnah, and that Shallan thinks her father was involved in, due to the symbol worn by the men who wanted the soulcaster back.

So, Cheese Ninja, you may have just spotted a good link. It could well be that Kaladin killed Shallan's brother.

Just starting my first re-read, and I've noticed another quote about the shardblade and her Father's death on page 131:

"As always thinking of her father made her feel ill, and the pain started to constrict her chest. She raised her freehand to her head, suddenly overwhelmed by the weight of House Davar's situation, her part in it, and the secret she now carried, hidden ten heartbeats away."

A bit of a jump back in the conversation, but I recall we were discussing bridges being 50 feet long, When Kaladin first sees a bridge on page 101 it is said to be around 30 feet long.

Actually, only one order of the Radiants were Surgebinders. The Windrunners, I believe.
The Ars Arcanum said that WIndrunners used two primary types of surgebinding, implying that there are other sorts of surgebinding, perhaps some of the other orders of radiants employed said other types.

Tangletalon: it's possible that Szeth is wrong, it has been postulate that some special method is needed to use surgebinding whilst wearing plate.

Well, I bought the import... I didn't like the UK cover or the wait.

I noticed some strange quotes from other deaths, but I assumed that the chapter heading ones are all from Taravangian and his.

hubay: Szeth's conversation with the king near the end of the book suggests that Szeth was given the shardblade as part of his punishment. As for his abilities to surgebind, well, one thing that confuses me is how he's almost certainly had training in thsoe abilities/read a book about them (having the names for the three lashings which the ars arcanum says come from some ancient book about what the radiants called them), which he wouldn't have done as a truthless considering that he doesn't want to be a murderer, so, for some reason he received that training, pre-becoming truthless.

Thanks for that post, Rhuan. It is obviously a lot more informational than mine in regards to the Q&A and has better pictures, as well.   :)
The post I linked to is not mine.

Regarding the Q&A someone else who was there has posted about this signing on the 17thShard, he also linked to a recording of the Q&A, his post is here: http://www.17thshard.com/forum/index.php/topic,106.0.html

I assumed that all of the death quotes that say "collected on..." were from people being murdered by Taravangian and his "healers".

This is Brandon, he's a king of plot twists, if the ending involves an epic battle of men vs parshmen I'll be somewhat shocked.

That is part of why I'd assume they wouldn't be weighted, so that the pulling accross part wouldn't be a problem.

Don't the Parshendi jump all the distances?  If that's the case, I bet there aren't any 20 foot chasms.
The Parshendi even jump to the tower which apparently at the narrowest point would be risky for someone in shardplate to jump. So question, how much does shardplate enhance jumping ability. Parhsendi clearly have super jumping ability...

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Sazed, The effects of holding two shards, and Odium
« on: September 10, 2010, 11:18:22 PM »
It is assumed that the shards on each planet gave up some of their power to create the life forms on those planets. It may be that Odium did not aid in the creation of life on roshar though, hence not giving up any of his power.
