Brandon Sanderson / Re: How did the Lord Ruler survive a beheading?
« on: August 08, 2010, 06:10:10 AM »
His head wasn't completely cut off, and he was burning his goldmind (getting extreme bursts of stored health), so he was able to heal from it.

Many of those things he survived from were exaggerations.

Golden Sun update!

First, it looks like Karis is a Jupiter Adept (who has healing Psynergy! Wee!). In a Japanese magazine the creators said that Dark Dawn is not split into two games, so there you have it.

Today I also beat Golden Sun and Golden Sun: The Lost Age again. I still love these games.

Still, good job getting an ARC :D

Who's organizing Stormleaders? Because it isn't 17th Shard, so I'll need to give whoever it is an email :P

Lethalfalcon made the much better point: does it matter? No, it doesn't. Cobb settled his issues with his subconscious and Mal, so dream or not, he is ready to go home. And that's good enough for me.

If you choose to care about the MC only, yeah, it doesn't matter. Every named character suffers if he doesn't wake up.

Considering the scope of the story is exclusively about Cobb, yeah, that's pretty much how I feel about it. This is Cobb's story.

Ee, I agree half way. I think it could have used a bit more exposition at the very beginning and less everywhere else.

Well, since I knew the movie was about dream technology, it didn't take me very long to figure out what was going on in the beginning. After that, I was never confused by the rest of the movie, perhaps due to the exposition. I never felt it went too far; I think there was a solid balance.

As for the ending, I had a long conversation with lethalfalcon about it. Personally, I want Cobb to get to see his real children again, so I wanted him in the real world, and that was how I immediately interpreted the ending. Lethalfalcon made the much better point: does it matter? No, it doesn't. Cobb settled his issues with his subconscious and Mal, so dream or not, he is ready to go home. And that's good enough for me.

Sort, I added a spoiler tag, so now we can discuss the ending.

And (since the spoiler warning is in the title already and it's speculation) the top dropped. I'm convinced.

I think so too.  That's my way of ignoring a few of the plot holes I found, haha.

Pfft, the only plot hole I saw was that the gravity shift only went one level down. Which isn't a "plot" hole, per se. Other than that, solid.

I saw no similarities. I think this is a stretch and you're just seeing archetypes.

I'm with Peter on this one guys. You can make this sorta statement about any similar group heist / hero / etc movie. (That's what inception is, a glorified heist movie. That's not an insult, I loved loved loved inception.)

Fun idea, not bashing the creative process of connection or anything. Just think it's a stretch.

I agree, it is a big stretch.

I agree, Steve, it is easily the best movie of the year, thus far. I think calling any movie so close to release a "masterpiece" is jumping the gun a bit, as that's something that takes time to reveal. But there's no question, this is an expertly crafted film.

So "not the best Nolan film" still means "this is an awesome Nolan film", and I'm okay with that.

It was only in retrospect when I realized some, but they weren't nearly as deep as yours. I felt the heist style, combined with "rules" of the dreams like Allomancy, and also realized that Mal is a similar name to Mare. I agree with Peter though, a lot of it was archetypes. The heist story is one of those typical structures. To be fair, I had thought "You know, it's really cool they are letting me know some of the logic of the dreams. This is like Sanderson's First Law, and by knowing these elements, they paid off Cobb's character."

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Jeph Jacques likes Sanderson

I never knew Jeph liked Brandon's stuff until he made that sketch (which is now Brandon's Twitter picture). It's awesome.

QC isn't too questionably contented, most times, but there's plenty of references, I suppose.

So... thoughts?

My thoughts: wow, what an excellent, well-crafted film. This is awesome.

I highly doubt Brandon was folding laundry. However, it does seem like an efficient use of a night auditor's time.

I'll need to ask him the next time I meet him :P Because if I could spend that time folding laundry (all of it) on writing, I would be so much happier. But, there's so much laundry to fold--it has to be done, and it's next to impossible to complete--it's stressful. Instead of getting cool ideas, my brain just turns off.

Alternatively, I wish they would fire me from my new job. You'd think that being a night auditor at a hotel would be awesome. After all, that's what Brandon did to get published.

Less enthralling is the endless laundry to fold. Forever. And ever.

I think I'm going to try and withdraw some money from college savings, simply so I don't have to work this semester. Sigh.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: "The Gathering Storm..."

I started with Elantris, which was excellent enough to get me hooked on the author. His writing, however, has gotten far better since then.

Mistborn remains my favorite of his novels. It's the tightest plot-wise of these three potential beginning Brandon novels, and has excellent worldbuilding (not to say that the characters aren't good--they are awesome. It's just the magic system outshines them). Its prose isn't as awesome as Warbreaker, however. Though its hard to knock the fact that Mistborn is my favorite.

So, Warbreaker has been usual recommendation, because I think virtually anyone can get into the story. It's lighter in tone, but just as epic as his other epic fantasies. It has the tightest prose of his published novels (that is, until The Way of Kings), which makes it a wonderful read.
