Brandon Sanderson / Re: Warbreaker commentary
« on: June 13, 2009, 10:15:30 PM »
Thanks.  My sister, who hates science fiction of any sort, and whose post started mine, has said she might try Warbreaker now. I hope she follows through. If I can convert her, I can get anyone.

Brandon Sanderson / Warbreaker commentary
« on: June 10, 2009, 12:55:36 AM »
I wrote a non-spoiler commentary (its not really a review) about Warbreaker on my blog.  If anyone is interested here's the link.

What do you think?

I sent my husband and two oldest children off camping, made pizza for my younger ones, and put on several videos.
I am an evil Mom, but only when there is a book I really need to finish.

Books / Re: The Eye of the World (graphic novel)
« on: June 06, 2009, 06:20:46 AM »
I didn't know about the graphic novel until it started being discussed here.  Now I have to add another book to my need to buy list.
My husband once said that my book hobby was cheaper than other women's love of shoes, shopping or jewelry.  Now that I have to buy Brandon's new books in hardback, and this one, and the other interesting books that I learn about here (we have a very small library) he might change his mind.

I don't think my bookstore will make much of a difference because I am absolutely sure they don't have any other copies of Warbreaker. Their entire sci-fi/fantasy section consists of one three foot bookshelf, about half of it used. B&N doesn't have the excuse of being tiny and independent like Arches Book Company.
Just finished it by the way.  It was great. Now I will have strange dreams tonight.

Then I feel silly because the main reason I ordered it was to help with that first week sales list.
My bookstore is VERY small and probably didn't even think to check the new release dates, they put it in with all the other book orders.  I try to support them when I can because not many towns the size of mine have a bookstore at all.

I ordered Warbreaker through my local bookstore and they called me today to pick it up.  So I have my copy and now I can read it over the weekend without feeling too guilty about ignoring stuff.
My husband read it on the computer, but I hate doing that.  He has been impatient for me to get it so we could talk about it.

Everything Else / Re: RIP David Eddings

How sad.  Even though he hasn't published anything recently I like, it is always depressing when an author I like dies.
My kids are almost old enough to introduce to the Belgariad.  Meaning old enough to follow the plot and understand the relationships, but young enough to not notice the plot and detail problems.

Movies and TV / Re: Reliving my childhood: The Secret of NIMH

I saw it when I was too small, it terrified me.   I vaguely remember reading the book later and thinking, "this wasn't so bad, what was the matter with me?" But I only remember bits and the feeling of sadness and fear along with that movie.

I'm very impressed by anyone translating, my language skills are horrible.  Are you doing this for fun, or some other reason?

Everything Else / Re: What did you have for dinner?
« on: May 27, 2009, 08:49:51 PM »
no, this was a recipe I got from a friend who taught home economics at a high school.  It has cream of mushroom soup and onion soup mix.  When it turns out my husband likes it better than the other kind, but I seem to have some sort of mental block on this type of food.  I can make all sorts of complicated things and they turn out beautifully.  When I try to make one of the easiest of all it always turns out badly.

In a rush and desperate I made the dreaded chicken and rice casserole.  It came out half-done and nasty.  We had ham sandwiches instead.

Thunderstorms five days in a row!  Very unusual to get so much rain this time of year, but my garden loves it and my kids are all weirded out.

Everything Else / Re: What is your favorite type of Soda?
« on: May 27, 2009, 02:13:53 AM »
I have an unfortunate addiction to Dr. Pepper.  Unfortunate because I am passing it on to my kids.  As soon as I have the will power I intend to quit in favor of no soda at all.
My husband grew up in non-pop household.  I grew up in a house where my little sister's first word was "Pop." So I have actually tapered off from what I used to drink when I was single.
I would be interested to know if those who don't drink soda grew up not drinking it.

Books / Re: Best Heinlien Book...*possible spoilers*
« on: May 20, 2009, 04:09:45 AM »
I read Time Enough for Love as  young teenager and was completely hooked into Heinlein.  That book seriously blew my young mind.  Its possible that it is why I stuck with fantasy and sci-fi when every other teenage girl my age had never heard of it.  Reading LoTR as a 9-10 yr old helped too.  I was looking for something and it really resonated with me,
Now, as a 37-yr old woman I remember those feelings, but I can't really understand what I was thinking that made Heinlein my absolute favorite at that age. I missed so much, and the books are a much different experience for me now.  I still like them, but the sexual relations seem too simplistic for me now.  Free Love just doesn't work.  The politics only feels relevant when I am feeling especially cynical and libertarian (after listening to NPR for a while for example).
