Brandon Sanderson / Re: Favourite book
« on: August 25, 2009, 06:55:26 PM »
This post contains spoilers. sorry.
I went with HoA. I just loved the feeling of revalation that we got with it being the last book of the series and all (i guess i should say most) of the secrets being brought out into the open.  Even though a year of speculating led me to guess a few of the reveals, most of them came as a surprise and i was wowed.
We had Spook turning into one of the coolest characters of the series, TenSoon giving us a fascinating look at kandra civilization, Sazed and his struggle with faith, and some of the best fight scenes ever (Vin versus thirteen Inquisitors comes to mind), though granted i think the best ones are in WoA.
The only real problem i have with the book is that the Vin and Elend character arcs didn't seem quite as strong this time around, which is, i think, one of the reason it was ok for them to die at the end of the book. I felt that the first two books did a great job of exploring their characters and showing them grow and so by the time the third book came along there were only a few loose ends to tie up in their relationship, and then they were "ready" to die.  But i think it works out.  That fact allowed us more time to explore the other characters of this world.
All in all, HoA was epic. A great conclusion to a great series.

(P.S. WoA is a very close second)

so i was thinking about how brandon said there were 36 planned books in the Hoid-Verse and decided to make a list of the one we know of so far.

Elantris x2
Mistborn x9 (two future trilogies)
Warbreaker x2
The Stormlight Archive x10
Dragonsteel x7
White Sand
The Silence Divine

assuming i'm remembering my numbers right, that makes 32, leaving four left unknown. i suppose its most likely that these will be a combination of sequels for white sand and silence, but i think it is safe to assume there are a couple worlds left in the hoid-verse that we know nothing of.
sorry, kinda random.

miyabi is telling the truth. bastille dies in this next book... despite this, i found the scriveners bones to be even better than the first. i loved it.

oh, and if you like his stuff so far, hero of ages will blow ur mind! seriously, wear a helmet

i understand and agree with what u were saying. just though i'd point out that he hasn't really specified a pattern for the assignment of feruchemical or hemalurgic powers. personally i'm waiting for the hopefully eventual feruchemy and hemalurgy posters. though that means the allomancy one would actually have to be released first *cough cough*

for the most part, i don't think ur off sortitus. the only problem i have with what u said is that if u look at the table in the backs of the books, the internal/external pairing law only seems to hold true for allomancy. however i do think that is what zinc essentially does. it "speeds up your thoughts" so depending on how much u tap at a time, u could possibly reach supercomputer levels of information processing. if u were to tap the same levels of physical speed u would really be moving and thinking at the ratio as normal. i believe that this would give u the same coordination as u normally would have.

i also agree with delson. religion is a very natural part of humanity as we try to explain the unexplained. i think it is very believable that people would declare people with these kinds of magical powers gods.

i agree with you, aghaene. but unfortunately there is some debate as to whether mental speed works that way. i too believe it does and would allow a feruchemist great control of their body even at incredible speeds. how it would work otherwise i don't know, but there are some who believe it does

i believe that the people becoming gods thing reoccuring is largely do to the fact that so far his books have all taken place in the same universe. i believe the overall backstory involves the great power of the universe, possibly some kind of god, Adonalsium, having its power split into 16 shards which were dispersed to various planets where they can be attained by human beings making themselves semi-gods. Ruin, Preservation, and Endowment are examples of this. (i'm pretty sure this is correct, but i may be off on some of it) Brandon's religous background may also be a factor.

as for what curious posted... i don't know. maybe brandon has father issues  ;)

now i really think we need to see a pewter savant. but i disagree. i don't think the effect of a pewter savant could beat a feruchemist's speed.  a feruchemist could store up years worth of speed, not easily but you get the idea, a lot of power and squeeze it all out in a few seconds. you can't beat that.

yeah i believe we mentioned them as a possibility in the Hoid thread, along with the terrisman who serves Elend and the old man tea, but we went back to the old man because he is the only one with a speaking part and despite this is left without a name.

well hold on for a second. i saw that to, but i still think it is the old man.  the question gave a list of possibilities that that person had come up with, but notice that brandon neither confirmed nor denied their guesses and kinda dodged the specific question saying that we were very close. i think that brandon was just hesitating to give it away when someone came at him with a list of possibilities and not a specific guess. with the clues he's given us i still think that the olld man is the only one that fits.
