Brandon Sanderson / Re: Thoughts about Warbreaker (Could be spoilers)
« on: November 24, 2009, 10:46:46 PM »
so i have something to say about why vivenna couldn't just awaken something small, give away the rest of the breath and then take back her breath from the object she awakened.  This is not a flaw in the logic of the magic system, it fits.

The reason she could not do this is because the only objects that take only one breath to awaken are Lifeless and the breath given to these dead bodies is irretrieveable.  if vivenna were to attempt what u suggest and awaken some other object she would have to invest in it any number of breaths depending on the objects resemblance to a man and its relation to living material.  There is no way for her to invest only one breath and still be able to retrieve it. Following your method she would have fewer breaths true, but she would still be left with more than one breath.

I suppose if she were incredibly determined, she could attempt to find an object that would take exactly one less breaths than she had to awaken and then just get rid f the object, but seeing as biochroma is fairly imprecise, this would be extremely difficult. Unless, of course, she went around creating Lifeless after Lifeless, decreasing her stores one by one until she only had one breath left. but i doubt Austre would approve of that...

i like it Valkynphyre.  very simple, but a lot of possibilities.  and i don't think ur a bad person. the main character in the story i'm writing right now is becomes suicidal halfway through it.

One concept that i came up with that i think could be really interesting is consciously controlling the unconscious functions of your body.  I think of it like breathing. you don't have to constantly think breathe in, breathe out for it to happen, but if u want u can take control of your breath. what if a person could do the same thing with other bodily functions? growing skin perhaps. people could consciously develop a kind of "callous armor", create disguises, and several other things.

The natural progression of this idea in my mind then was, what happens if these normally unconscious functions become completely conscious. how much time would a person have to spend each day consciously regrowing new skin? what would happen if they ever got injured or cut? in this case, the "magic" could possibly move from being considered an unusual power to a plague, especially if it is genetic.

There are definately some interesting social consequences that could arise from this.  If this power was significant enough for those who had it to gain power over those who don't, what happens when the power changes?

so far i've only thought about this in terms of growing skin, but there are plenty of other bodily functions that would be cool to take control of. take ur pick.

i just couldn't deal with the fact that Erikson seemed not to care if his readers had any clue what was going on or not and so couldn't finish Gardens of the Moon the first time i tried.  maybe i'll have to give it another try...

ArgentSun, i believe u are confusing two different authors.  Steven Erikson is the name of the author who writes the Malazan books, and David Eddings is another author whom Brandon has also suggested at some point.

I would also try Scott Lynch's The Lies of Locke Lamora, and i am currently reading a book by another new Utah author named John Brown called Servant of a Dark God which so far is very good.

it is not an inconsistency.  if u read the rest of the book u will find out more about the art of hemalurgy and that the number of spikes is not at all confined to the basic eleven.  at the end of the book i believe marsh has around twenty.

there was also a thread somewhere on here where people gave a lot of ideas for different shirt possibilities. i'm eagerly waiting for someone to make a "Devoted Follower of the Church of the Drunken Monkey" shirt

Just thought i'd respond to brandon'sw question.
yes. i am interested in almost anything you guys make as collector's items. being the poor college student that i am i am not sure i would be able to buy the more expensive things (though i might have to just suck it up and get a Nightblood), but posters and small collectable would be great.

that's what i want to know too.  i think brandon is contracted for four, and a fifth book is a possibility if scholastic thinks its a good idea. so we need to do what Alcatraz says and buy his books!

great book! very funny and clever, as always.  best line had to be when alcatraz commented on there being towers on every building and "seizing the throne".  Folsom's Talent was awesome. i can totally seem him surrounded by a whole bunch of Librarians, then putting on headphones and just taking them all out. so cool.  i'll be interested to see where the whole Lybrarian thing goes.  any guesses on who Alcatraz supposedly murders? my guess is Attica.

And is it weird that i was able to read the whole "frustrating part" in chapter 14 without any trouble at all?
