Books / Re: So did you hear about Chris Paolini's books?

I agree with White and Charity about the social aspect of home schooling.  My nephew is home schooled because he has issues, but it seems that they "coddle" him and the issues are getting worse, not better.  When he gets a job, they aren't going to care about his issues.  Public school gives you a chance to work through some of those issues, and have friends, and learn about dating and sexuality.  Home schooling makes for a very sheltered individual, who is in no way ready for the college environment.

I'm not sure how I would feel about this either.  I've read all the books, as soon as they came out, and thoroughly enjoyed the story.  But, I think she wrapped it up really well, and it would be a good thing to close off Harry.  But there is no reason she couldn't focus on future generations, with the next evil wizard, or do a prequel.  I would just hate for her to fall prey to the pressure and creating another Harry book just because it's a cash cow.

I didn't get any of the homo erotic stuff either.  I thought it was obviously written by a kid, but liked the story well enough.  I try to take the story at face value, and don't try and read stuff into it.  I'll leave that to the english majors. :-)

I hadn't heard that.  It did throw me that Amazon is selling the third one already, even though it doesn't come out until September.  What did you think of the movie version of Eragon?

Brandon Sanderson / Re: torrent!

I pretty much agree with Spriggan, what is the difference between downloading a book/movie illegally, or stealing one from a store?  But a lot of people who would never walk into a store and take something will download on the internet.  My stepson has in the past downloaded things and shared them with friends.  It took a long time for my husband and I to get him to understand the ramifications of his actions.  It seems that the internet has blurred the lines around some illegal actions by making things so easy  to obtain, and packaging them in a way that makes it seem okay.

Just my personal opinion, but any kinds of illegal downloads is the same as stealing from a store or someone's house.

I like almost all books.  I can generally ignore inconsistencies in the research and enjoy the story, but there are a couple of authors whose books I couldn't get through.

Melanie Rawn - I can't rememberthe exact book, I put it down after a short time because the spelling and typos were so horrible.

Sara Douglass - I've tried twice to pick up one of her books, most recently The Serpent Bride, and lost interest after about a 100 pages.  I can count on one hand the number of books that I've been unable to finish in my life and for 2 of hers are on that list.  I know I won't pick up a third.

I'm another reader who had never heard of Brandon before the WoT announcement, but have since read all his books and love them.  I count them among my favorites now.

I hope Brandon's books come to Kindle.  I'm hopefully getting one for my birthday, and would love to have Mistborn available.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: So..what should Brandon do next?
« on: January 22, 2008, 06:17:58 PM »
I'm torn about this.  I love Brandon's work, and would love to see him take on a big epic.  But, personally, I have trouble staying focused on big epics.  I start them, and then while waiting for the next book to come out, I lose interest, or get sidetracked by a different series.  So, standalone books work great for me, it let's me enjoy the author's work, without having to go back and re-read the previous books in the series so I can remember where things stand.

Books / Re: Do Dead Authors Have Rights?

This is interesting, especially in regard to Lord of the Rings.  Tolkien vehemently resisted making feature films of his work.  He feared that that depth would be lost.  But after his death, his children agreed to the movie deal.  Should they have respected his wishes?  I enjoyed the films, but was it right to make them?

I never read the last page of a book.  I do remember the Billy Crystal quote from "When Harry met Sally" where he says that he always read the end of a book in case he dies before finishing it.  I would rather get there when I get there, and be surprised by any twists or epiphanies.  It's one of the things I love about reading, being drawn to the climax and living through it emotionally with the characters.

Brandon Sanderson / New to the site
« on: January 18, 2008, 12:30:46 AM »
Hi everyone!  I just want to say that I am really glad I found Mistborn.  I loved the book, and am currently reading Well of Ascension.  I am always looking for new authors to read, and the fact that there is a website like this is great.  It doesn't seem like many authors make themselves so accessible to their fans.

Thanks Brandon!

I read the first 4 or so books of the Sword of Truth series, but gave up on the rest because I didn't enjoy the amount of philosophical rants in the books.  Now that I've read that essay and seen how manic he is about fantasy, and how it's crap, I won't read any more of his books.  I read fantasy because I love the stories.  I like to think, and don't mind some moralistic/ethical speeches, but to say that his books are not fantasy because he presents more depth and more ideas is idiotic.  They are pure fantasy.  He takes the poor, backwoods kid with no parents and turns him into the hero of the world.  What in that is not fantasy?
