Brandon Sanderson / Re: Warbreaker Paperback!

As usual I bought the hardcover but waited for the paperback to actually read the book (I hate hate hate lugging around hardcovers). Just got it today, yay...

When I first read Elantris more than a year ago, and Mistborn quickly after that, I thought to myself that there's no way the Cosmos would be fair enough to give this ridiculously talented author the success he deserved. But sometimes, things actually happen the way they should.

Nice. I just got the Mistborn 2 pback, and it looks like the same artist did that too.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: How did you find out about Brandon Sanderson?

Randomly followed Amazon links related to fantasy books, came across Elantris. Amazon is an awesome sales tool... I learn of perhaps 90% of the new CDs and books I buy through Amazon lists and links...

So this is a concept sketch, right? Should we expect the final product to be as finally detailed as your other covers? If so, it should be fine (otherwise the whole abstract watercolor technique just does not work for me). But I don't like the lettering at all. It's too fancy, especially with the big W; it gives the impression of a cheap romance novel.

Interesting. I loved how Foster depicted Vin on the hardback covers - exactly how I pictured her from the text. If this new guy makes her look like Jennifer Garner like all the chicks do in the sample paintings linked above, that would be very disappointing.

I'm not sure how the MB1 PB cover ever got approved. I mean, didn't anybody at Tor actually see it before it went out? Couldn't they have asked Foster to touch it up?

Two hilarious reviews up there now. Plus I'm betting the unfortunate soul who purchased that single copy is going to be very disappointed.

It's 2:30 AM. I just finished Mistborn and wrote up this Amazon review:

"Genius. I was unsure whether Brandon could top Elantris after I picked up Mistborn, because Elantris turned out to be one of the best fantasy novels I'd read in years. Page by page, he succeeded - by the end you'll be shaking your head in disbelief at what he pulled off. The pacing in this novel is perfect, a talent sorely lacking in most genre authors; I get the sense that Brandon would make an amazing spy novelist. The magic system and other world details are constructed with a diamond-edge precision. Overall a stunning effort."

Honestly, it's so often that a book starts off great and just ends up sucking wind. Or is great but the author can't figure out how to end it. Or the author is unwilling to end it.

You know what, this novel would make a great serious anime, as would Elantris. Forget spending $300 mil on the live-action movie.

Note that you can still find both, if you know how to look.  They ARE on Amazon, you just have to go the paperback first, then click on the hardback link there.

Takes you to the hardcover Elantris.

I WILL be selling signed copies through my website eventually.  These, however, will have remainder marks on them.  (Each one has a little black dot on the top.)  Plus, we're not sure when we'll begin selling them.

Ahh thanks... I now see that there is an "other editions" link at the bottom of all Amazon search results.

Hardbacks of Elantris and Mistborn 1 appear to be sold out at Amazon, which is a good thing I guess (but not sure why the publisher isn't making more if so). Personally I'd love a hardback of Elantris.

My problem is that while I want to support the authors I like, I'm also extremely cheap.  I have a hard time buying anything new, because I know I can get it at such a better price used.  It's a dilemma for me, because I want the authors I like to get something out of me buying their books, but I don't have that much money to throw around.

That's why I only do this for my top five or so authors. The same thing for music CDs - I'll buy the cheap used CD on Amazon, but if its for one of the five bands I can't live without, you bet I'll order the new one. Everyone else has to fend for themselves. :)

Brandon Sanderson / thoughts on hardbacks
« on: October 24, 2007, 08:14:41 AM »
Brandon's essay on hardbacks and papers intrigued me. (For those who haven't seen it, link is at bottom of this post). I must say I hate to buy hardbacks solely for the reason of convenience, since I so often read on the go. (And I can usually wait until the paperback comes out no matter how great the author is.) But I'm honestly shocked by how much more authors make off a hardback, in percentage terms. That kind of sucks actually.

Personally I'd have no problem paying today's hardback prices for something the size of a paperback but constructed like a hardback. I don't understand why no publisher does that. But anyways, now that I know about how the industry works, I'm going to make a point of picking up the hardback versions of new novels by my top five or so authors, even if I eventually only read the paperbacks. I suppose I can justify this by classifying them as collectible copies. (I have a copy of Mistborn 2 on the way that I'll hope someday to get Brandon to sign in person).
