Brandon Sanderson / Re: Something I just realized... (WOT)

Fain has appeared in Brandon's WoT books.  He's up in the Blight, killing Myrdraal and making Mashadar-Zombie Trollocs while walking towards where he thinks the Last Battle will be.

...now that you mention it, yeah, I think I vaguely remember that. Where's that part at?

Brandon's on the record as saying that he doesn't like having truly evil characters, and just about all the villains in the Cosmere tend to be sympathetic in some way.

It would be difficult to argue, from just about any philosophical perspective, that Padan Fain is not capital-E Evil.

I don't believe I've seen Fain since Brandon took over.

Hmm...

Yeah, I've been following his tweets and I'm amazed that he accomplishes as much as he does in a day.  I know if I tried to do this it would take me at least twice as long as Brandon and it wouldn't be half as meticulous.  The man is amazing!

Didn't you know?  Brandon's the one who holds the 16th shard, Creativity.

As an aside, the word "goggles" starts to look really funny when you type it too much. Goggles goggles goggles...

Psst! You see that lady over there?  What kind of hairstyle does she have?  ;)

Looks to me like Vin's up by 300...

Bejay: Go back and re-read Richard's brother's "fire is bad" speech at the very start of the first book.  Keep in mind that in pre-electrical societies, (especially ones with no magic,) the controlled use of fire is synonymous with civilization itself.  But people were listening and agreeing instead of denouncing him a an obvious nutcase.

There were a few entertaining bits in the first few books, but on the whole the series is rotten through and through, from the beginning to the end.

Pity I only know Sword of Truth by reputation.  On the other hand, I have read Atlas Shrugged, so yeah, I follow.

Trust me, you're better off not having read it.

So now we've got Vin vs. Zedd from The Sword of Truth.

My initial thoughts on seeing that lineup were similar to Brandon's take on it, but he says it so much better than I could...

That's where a good screenwriter comes in.  Besides, when you do any sort of filmed production you can't be 100% faithful to the book.  There's always something that gets cut or bridged over because it wouldn't transfer well to the screen.  That's why the book is almost always better than the movie.

I dunno. I was quite impressed by the movie of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe for the way they stayed faithful to the book.  Of course, it's a much smaller book than the ones we've been talking about, which probably helped quite a bit...

Ack!  Now you've got me thinking of the retracting fauna from Roshar together with those spiraly retracting jungle plants from Avatar.   :P

Is that a good almost-fall-out-of-chair or a bad one?

I'm a little bit worried when I hear that, simply because of Legend of the Seeker.  The only good thing that can be said about that show was that it was not as bad as the books, if for no other reason than that it stretches the bounds of possibility to take The Sword of Truth and make it any worse!  But if someone was to make a TV adaptation of stories that are actually worth reading, such as The Stormlight Archive, I'd hope that it was done by a better team than that.

I think The Way of Kings would make an awesome movie, except for one thing.  It's way too long to fit into a movie properly and the quality would suffer from that much as the Harry Potter stories have, especially the later ones.

??? The early Harry Potter movies were horrible because they followed the books too closely. The screen writing improved dramatically after the second film.

I would have to disagree strongly with that. I distinctly remember walking out of the third movie thinking "what in the world was that?!?"  And the fourth one was not Harry Potter and the Goblet Of Fire by any means; it was "Harry Potter In The Triwizard Tournament."  There was so much more relevant material in the story that they simply didn't have space to put into the movie, and it really suffered for it.

What I'm really worried about are the persistent rumors of plans for a Runelords movie.  Too many plot points are dependent on people having insane levels of Glamour that can be easily imagined but could never be believably represented in a visual medium.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: What are the words?
« on: March 15, 2011, 03:41:40 PM »
Back to the original question, has anyone considered the fact that what the king said was the last words out of his mouth, spoken just seconds before his death?  There's a definite possibility that what the king spoke was actually just death-babbling, (perhaps he was channeling Nohadon,)  and Szeth simply interpreted it as actually coming from the king's conscious will because 1) it seemed to fit the context and 2) the death-babbling phenomenon seems to have started at right about this same time and Szeth was probably not aware of it yet.
I've considered that, but in a rather different way - there's nothing "just" about "just death babbling".  The pre-death blurbs are all full of meaning, prophecy, and supernatural insight, and at least some of them definitively indicate continued awareness of the speaker's present situation and preferences - for example, there's one where one of Taravangian's victims states specifically that he refuses to tell of what he sees because he knows what Taravangian is doing and hates him for it.  Thus, Gavilar's request being part of that phenomenon would grant it more weight, not less.

In fact, I would go so far as to suggest that the death-babbling phenomenon is the original reason for the Shinovar custom of honoring dying requests - it's happened before, or has always been happening, and at some point in ancient history they learned to take special heed of dying words specifically because dying words are backed by more than mortal knowledge.  The recent upsurge could be explained by the Everstorm entering the death-viewable future and giving a lot more people something worth actually talking about in their final moments.  Maybe death-babbling has been happening for a long time, but few enough people saw anything significant enough to inspire them to speak that no one really noticed.

Very interesting.  Lots of good points.  But remember the whole bit about all the magical stuff the rest of Roshar takes for granted not holding sway in Shinovar?

I seriously doubt the Shin are completely wrong about everything.  They're wrong about some things, no doubt, but they probably have bits of the truth other people have dropped.  Brandon likes that motif, and its much more realistic than the not uncommon claim of all or nothing when it comes to cultures and magic.

Sure, I didn't say they're wrong about everything. Just that a lot of magical stuff doesn't seem to work the same in Shinovar. No highstorms, no spren, they're not familiar with soulcasting, etc...
