Brandon Sanderson / Re: Alloy of Law - Vanishers Theory

since the First shipment stolen was a railcar of aluminum, what if  you make a Aluminum shell in the shape of a railcar, paint it, then use coinshots/lurchers to place it on the Tracks ahead of the care, then remove it when the train stops.   mix in some dryice, mist, what ever, :D
Seems just as likely as any of my theories.  :D

What I find most interesting is the "Ghost Trains".

Chapter 3:
Quote
The robberies were all similar, save for the one at the playhouse. A train was stopped because of a distraction on the tracks—early on, a fallen tree. Later, a ghostly phantom railcar that appeared from the mists, traveling directly at the train. The engineers stopped in a panic, but the phantom ahead vanished.

I noted several things about this passage:
1. the first time, the Vanishers did not have phantom train technology.  They seem to have gained it sometime after the first robbery, or maybe because of the first robbery.
2. The train comes out of the mists.

Theories:  Phantom Trains are not, as far as we know, part of any magic system on this world.  I have come up with several theories on what could cause them, ranging from plausible to extremely implausible.
1. The engineers are working for the Vanishers, and lying about what they see. (Very plausible, although I don't think it's likely)
2. The train is shaped from mist. (Possible, but it would seem that that would require Sazed's intervention)
3. Bendalloy mistings create and take apart the phantom train. (already discussed)
4. The train is some sort of Atium shadow (very implausible, I have no idea how this would work)
5. A very large kandra is mimicking a train. (more of a joke than a theory)

Oh, just publish the book already!   ;D

Chapter was amazing, as always.

The Passage by Justin Cronin is good.  It's post apocalyptic, and an excellent read.

The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch is an incredible heist novel.  Kelsier would be proud.  Just be warned, there is heavy swearing.

Iron and Steel lines are obstructed by wood (p132, FE paperback).  I had always assumed that it was purely a function of distance and size, but I guess not.

I think I always imagined it like magnetism.

What happens when Skip meets a group that has no written language?

I like Kelsier's conversation with Sazed about religion.  Then you get to the end of the book and understand.

Oh, and spoilers should probably be put in the title of this topic.

"Life before death.  Strength before weakness.  Journey before destination.  Speak again the ancient oaths, and return to men the shards they once bore.  The Knights Radiant must stand again."

I find this an interesting line.  Is he referring to shardblades, and if so, why doesn't he consider their current usage to be valid?

Also, this topic should probably have *spoilers* in the title.

Incidentally, I found this quote, from when Taravangian is telling Szeth about the death-messages.

Quote
"We do not know why dome speak when others do not,"  Taravangian said.  "But the dying see something.  It began seven years ago, about the time when King Gavilar was investigating the Shattered Plains for the first time."

Going to second the Long Price Quartet by Daniel Abraham.  Those books were incredible.

Nobody's mentioned the Destroyermen series by Taylor Anderson yet.  The series isn't finished yet, but the first five books are great, and continue to get better.

My theory is that Hoid is the cause of whatever split Adonalsium and the "element" he mentions is either what enabled the split, or the centerpiece of Adonalsium, which would enable it (him/her?) to rejoin.

I don't know exactly how they work, but your definitions would have you appear super fast in both the slowdown field and the speedup field, and that seems flawed, somehow.
