Site News / Re: Introduce yourself - right on!
« on: March 02, 2009, 04:58:59 AM »
Greetings.

My name is Jonathan and I will turn 34 three days  after making this post.  I live in Lexington, SC, am married, and have two young boys.  I have always been an avid reader, but have just in the last two years come to grips with the reality that I am a geek and prefer SciFi/Fantasy over other genres.  I've never been into RPGs or such, I just like to read a good story.

I admit to discovering Brandon Sanderson after he was chosen to finish WoT.  (Please don't hold that against me!)  I have purchased and read Elantris and the Mistborn Trilogy.  Mr. Sanderson's writing stands just fine on its own!  At this point I'm anxious to read AMoL and put the WoT series behind me.  I'm not one for delving deeper into a book and discussing theory and what hidden meanings any particular author might have had on a given subject.  This is something that always bothered me in my Literature classes.  I would always be the one to ask, "What if the author just wanted to tell a good story and really didn't mean anything else by what he wrote?"  That viewpoint may be contrary to many of the discussions on this forum, but I'll deal with that as it comes.

My other interests include Ford Mustangs and General Aviation.  I would like to be a pilot someday, but I am unable anytime soon.  I also recently got my hands on a new Amazon Kindle 2 and encourage any authors out there to work with their publishers to get their work availabe in e-book formats.  I travel quite a bit for my employer and carrying books can be cumbersome and expensive!

I hope I'll be a good fit for this forum.

Thanks,

Jonathan

Books / Re: Anyone Try the Kindle?
« on: March 02, 2009, 03:56:13 AM »
So....for my second post, I'll bring another thread back from the dead.

I got my Amazon Kindle 2 about five days ago.  It's an incredible little device.  I downloaded all of the Tor free ebook downloads that were released this summer and had them waiting for my Kindle to arrive.  I also downloaded many public domain free ebooks (classics) that I missed during my school years.  (I never did enjoy being forced to read something.)  It took me all of about five minutes to get used to reading on the Kindle.  The visibility is excellent and the device facilitates one handed reading very well.  It's even easier than a paperback to curl up with in bed.  After about ten minutes without a page turn, the unit will put itself into sleep mode.  A quick flip of the power slider switch will return you directly to the page you were last reading.  I never have to worry about losing my place again after dropping my book from falling asleep.

I was a bit surprised by the E-Ink display when I first turned the unit on.   It's very comparable to looking at a digital watch, but you can see it from any angle.  It's very easy on the eyes, but it is bland.  The text to speech feature is not much worth talking about.  It's there, but I tend to get distracted easily and do not foresee myself using it much, if at all.  It certainly is no replacement for an audiobook (of which I've only heard two or three).

I'm suffering from a bit of writer's block myself at the moment, but if anyone has any specific questions I will do my best to respond to them.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: One reason NOT to hate the French
« on: March 02, 2009, 03:34:03 AM »
I fully realize that this thread is nearly four years old, and I apologize for bringing it back to the top after so long...especially for my first post.  I stumbled across this thread while searching the forum for something.  I couldn't help but reply regarding one more reason to absolutely not hate the French.

Edit:  Dirty Wastrel is right.  I'm having a "DOH!" moment as I'm getting around to the FAQ and realizing that with my first post on this forum I've broken one of the biggies!  My sincerest apologies.  I'll do better in the future!

THIRD ITEM: Â Don't resurrect old threads.
Newcomers will often scroll through the pages and pages of threads looking for ones that are interesting to them, then post a reply to each one. Â The result is that dozens of old topics--ones that the forum community is tired of discussing--suddenly pop back to the top of the thread-order. Â This annoys the established members. Â I would suggest that rather than looking through old threads, you pay attention to threads that have already been posted on today, and respond to them in an intelligent way. Â (Note--your post doesn't have to be brilliant to be worthy of posting. Â If it's your genuine opinion, it has value. Â Posting an 'intelligent way' means posting in a polite, on-topic manner.)
