Reading Excuses / Re: January 11 - Silk - Cobwebs and Silhouettes

Congratulations! You actually got me to read something!

I like the premise and several of the concepts you are aiming towards. However, this piece raises more questions than are answered. I guess like the others I'd like just a bit more -- maybe half a page.

What is the point of the ghosts signing a contract? Does it effect only their relatives, or to the non-corporeal as well? Why have the living never heard this noise before? Are there no other child ghosts? Ever?!?

It might help if you develop one of the adult ghosts with a bit more description, especially with what is being said to him/her that would give some relevance or value to what the overseers are doing. And then why is that particular ghost distracted by the wailing child? Is there, and forgive my word choice, a tangible effect to the child's screams?

Oh, and if you ever want to film this, let me know. I'm pretty sure I can figure out how to do it nicely. That is assuming some script revisions and a tidy budget...

Reading Excuses / Re: Progress and Submission Reports

What I did on my Summer vacation.

What?! It's flippin' December already?!? Crud!

I have managed to sort through every single box I own, purging much detritus. I have several cases of books to be donated to the library. I have a pile gossa yet to be Free-Cycled. I have become the master of fine home-made furniture in the truest Swedish tradition using only simple hand tools (a la Ikea). The master bedroom is complete, and now to work on the boy's room. The bed will arrive on Friday. I have the frames for the Beatles posters ready. I submitted the application for preschool and am about to register him for a gymnastics class. I have researched that the State of Illinois has no residency time requirement, a $30 fee, and only a 24 hour waiting period after issuing a license. The minister has already been lined up. I still have to get the TV hooked up and order cable. The cellphones will have to wait so I can get a family plan. I have spent money like there's no tomorrow, and count it as a worthy investment. My Christmas present will arrive by Virgin Atlantic Airlines in mid-January.

What does this have to do with writing? Well, nothing.

But that explains my lack of progress on anything literary and absence from this August forum.

Mayhap once it is time for Summer vacation again I will get a chance to touch quill to parchment again...

Y'all have a great Holiday Season! My New Year looks to be truly wonderfull!

Cool!  Keep it for posterity. ;D

Oddly enough it is a really good read. And the game design theories that the Hickmans espouse actually would work well for designing a good action-pacted novel. I'm not saying every writer needs to run out and buy it (though I'm sure the Tayler Corp wouldn't mind). But it does give a good breakdown of common player motivations which the game master would want to appeal to -- this can also be seen as reader motivations that a writer would want to appeal to.

I'm just sayin'...

Don't know if this qualifies as 'progress' or not. Doesn't involve any writing whatsoever.

I made it to GenCon and got to meet Howard. Bought my XDM book that is Thrice Signed and includes a custom illustration of a perplexed dwarf.

Oh, and anybody on Facebook should note that Howard's current profile photo was cropped from the photo of him and me. You can follow his tagged photos and find the uncropped one of Howard and some half-asleep duffus in a Blue Sun T-shirt.

So no writing per se, but some fanboy action.

Karl! Fancy seeing you around again. ;)

Rumors of my demise have been greatly exagerated!

I suppose this should fall under the Progress Report thread. I've moved (just across town), been without phone or internet for a while, been on vacation to the mountains of North Carolina with my girlfriend, and finally returned to a home that is in shambles.

However, I can gladly say that I'm only one ring and a bent knee away from an engagement!

Oh, and I'm working (slowly) on a prose short story. Yep, no script this time!

And hopefully I can start reading again for y'all soon!

I try to remain Global, but I'll cop to having a heavy dose of Researcher in me.

I'm not sure I understand the point of this thread. It seems to me that if the author tags their work 'here there be dragons' and you don't like dragons, don't read it. I'm not sure it is beneficial to the author to have to keep track of who is offended by certain content or not. That's almost a passive form of self-censorship, and belies the point of a reading group.

Tag early, tag often, and let the buyer beware.

I'm probably "the old guy" here at 35 but I am pretty immatur...young at heart.  Again, look forward to meeting all and getting involved.

I'll see your 'old guy' and raise you 'crotchety' and 'cantankerous', young man! I've got you beat by almost a decade!

Welcome nonetheless. I like having some help at this end of the age curve.

My favorite author is Roger Zelazny. I had the pleasure of receiving a letter from him allowing me to use one of his short stories for the film that got me out of college. Sadly he passed away before I could present him with a copy of the finished film.

Wow, RZ is my favorite author as well. Which short story did you do a film on?

Sorry it took so long to reply. I've been internet-less for almost 2 weeks! Yikes! I'm just now getting caught up.

I made 'Divine Madness' from The Doors of His Face, The Lamps of His Mouth, and Other Stories. Reread the story and then bake your noodle trying to figure out how I did it. Yep, 75% of the film is presented in reverse! Still tells a good story.

We could surgically implant it into one of your apendages...?

You might not enjoy it, but it would be a hoot for those of us on the surgical team!

Well. I'll put it this way: I have no objections to the current system.

Sadly, I've been one of the folks sidelined by real life, and have had no time for writing, reading or critiquing. I'm hoping in the next month to no longer have to work overtime every weekend.

There are several of the stories that I started reading, and hope someday to get caught up on. Eventually...

Actually, they could avoid the lengthy legal battle if they simply wanted to lease my name from me. Showering me in hundred dollar bills would persuade me to drop the litigation. I'm not a difficult person to deal with.

I'm sure it's documented somewhere! That's for the lawyers to hash out.

Ummm…why??

Unless the book you cite is more than 35 years old, my name was Silver Tongue first!

Besides, I wouldn't be much of a US citizen if I wasn't fond of extraneous lawsuits, now would I?

Don't use 'Silver Tongue.' 'Silvertongue' is a name in a series already. (A published series. Obviously.)

Batch of copycats! I should sue them!!
