Brandon Sanderson / Re: Question about a Sequel for Elantris
« on: September 29, 2008, 11:46:51 PM »
All I know is if EUOL writes the sequal by the end of 2009 I get a $3,000 painting I want.

Because of a bet or what?

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Brandon's Book Tour

I don't care about the condition of my books, as long as all the words are still legible.  I'm a reader, not a collector.  For the same reason, I rarely buy hardcovers, because I find paperbacks much easier to read.

I feel the same way... For some reason, when I buy used books, I enjoy it when there are notes in the margins.  Now there is a limit to this, if the notes are all over and obscuring the book itself, then I don't enjoy it...obviously.

Qarlin:
Thanks for the recommend, yet I already have plans to read both Mistborns before the third arrives!

Rainbow:
Thanks for the info.  Like I said, I figured there was probably a post on it, but sorry I had to bring it up again.  Interesting to think about the triad format, because that leaves room for Raoden and Sarene's child.

Brandon Sanderson / Question about a Sequel for Elantris
« on: September 26, 2008, 05:56:41 AM »
So, I just spent the last hour and a half searching through the pages in the forum for a topic tag on a possible sequel for Elantris 2 (btw, this includes all those ambiguous topic titles that you can never tell what they are about...I hate them so).

Reaching about page 12, and still finding nothing on my question (and noticing that the dates were almost reaching into last year), I decided to (possibly re)post the question on the front page, trusting in the wisdom of those who have been here far longer than I.

I have finished Elantris, and was left with some questions about whether Brandon would ever make a full length novel sequel.  Reading the short story he wrote in order to impress his wife...ahem...in order to bring joy to a young eighth grader also left some hints as to a possible sequel (Sarene pregnant? does the child stand a heightened chance of the Shaod falling on him/her?  Galladon was a son of an Elantrian, AND a Dula who naturally had less of a chance of getting the Shaod...)

As you can see I have some burning questions, and since Warbreaker and Elantris are, as of yet, my only exposure to Brandon's writings, I am in need of some answers.

Also, sorry for posting if this has already been addressed.  If you could only point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: What would YOU like to see on the warbreaker cover?

Ok...terribly sorry because I know that this is borderline unforgivable to rez a thread this old...but I just had to throw in my suggestion (even if the OP or other responders don't frequent anymore).

I think the cover should have one of the massive D'Denir statues, with Vasher hidden a bit in the shadows, his awakened clothing giving the hint of being animated.

Ok, so I know its a little hard to show animation in a still-frame piece...but that is why I am an aspiring writer and not an aspiring artist, Kolo?

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Old posts by new posters

Ok, after searching back in all the past pages and posts, I too found the TG thread you were discussing.  (for everyone else, here is the link:
http://www.timewastersguide.com/forum/index.php?topic=5102.0

About the resurrection of past posts, I don't have a big problem with it...mostly because I am new here too and the more up to date posts there are the more there is to read.  I have been part of many forums that espouse the philosophy that if it isn't on the front page/2nd page or so, then its fair game.  But I know that some people would get REALLY annoyed if people just started rehashing things that are only a few topics down the list... so some diligent searching is in order, if only for a moment.

Saying that, I have never read Goodkind myself, so I have found myself at a loss as to judge the content of his works.  Yet the points made in the thread seemed valid, but not enough to condemn him as a person.  Unfortunately, the rant that Brandon/EUOL posted didn't work for me, so I wasn't able to read the interview in full, only pull some tidbits from what people were discussing.  My verdict (passed solely on the back and forth between others):  The guy is a total d***** bag.  There is no reason to alienate that many people who, though they may not like your books, would still possibly buy your future works on the theory/possibility that you got better.

As a side note, it was really funny to hear of him try and say his books shouldn't be labeled fantasy, even though the crux of his tales are magical in nature, or magic itself.

I finished Elantris last night...stayed up until 5:50, just long enough to hear traffic starting outside my window...

I'm going to be getting started with Mistborn this week hopefully, so I can't comment on a possible movie, yet.

Just thought of another one that happened to me the last couple nights...

Stay awake several nights straight...it works charms on the imagination.

NOTE:  I think that technically, after being sleep deprived for 48 hours, then you are clinically considered insane...just, you know, a warning.

Is this writers group pretty closed?  Or do you accept new applicants?

I play with my son.  He's only about a month old, but watching him interact with all the new things he is experiencing really makes my mind look at things differently.

This obviously only works if you have children yourself, and I don't suggest you run off and try and make one for the sole purpose of eliminating writer's block...

Being the new guy here doesn't lend much credibility to my suggestions, but then again I can't suggest much more than what others have already said!

My only comment/suggestion would be to flesh out a bit more of the wife/husband relationship (like Nessa said), it lends more power to the loss the character is feeling if the reader is involved with it at the same time.
