Brandon Sanderson / Re: Towers of Midnight *spoilers*
« on: October 12, 2010, 12:48:24 PM »
I believe I read somewhere that Brandon said there is a twist in the book that no one is expecting.

He did, but it is a specific sort of twist. He compared it to Vin's earring, and he said that the first clues of it show up in books 4-6 (in one of them, or all three - he won't say). He says it's a mystery we should have picked up on when it was introduced, and that it's something that comes up often in later books.

My best bet at the moment is that it has to do with Egwene's dream about ravens sinking into the flesh of Mat's shoulders. The dream was in book six, and the significance of the tattoos is explained in book four.

I think a large part of the book will take place in Seanchen.

I say it's Birgitte's resurrection. Nynaeve saw Moghedien throw Birgitte out of Tel'aran'rhiod  and we know, Nynaeve only has to see a weave done once to repeat it. She will be the one to bring Rand back to life.

It won't. RJ assured us that the story would not visit Seanchan again, and Brandon is respecting RJ's wishes on this. RJ left open a small possibility that there might be a visit comparable in length to Rand's and Aviendha's visit there in 'The Far Snows' and 'A Short Spear', but nothing any more substantial than that. He said the same about Shara.

Have you read chapter 1 yet? I think that's the most we'll get.

I'm pretty sure the Foretellings/visions/etc. dealing with Rand's death indicate that all three of his girls will be mourning him, so I'm pretty confident Min will survive to that point.  Of course, Rand's death will be faked or somehow temporary, so anything could happen after his "resurrection".  Rand could "die" in ToM, but I think that's more likely to be in A Memory of Light.

The "one who sees beyond" could be Egwene. She is a dreamer and the boat could be a skimming platform, sh makes them in the form of barges.

Brandon Sanderson / Towers of Midnight *spoilers*

Given the rapidly approaching release of this novel, it deserves it's own thread even though this forum focuses on Brandon's unique works.

The prologue has been released, as has chapter 1.

I thought that they were both great and can't wait to see what the rest of the book has in store.

I predict that Graendal manages to off Min and Cadsuane, but is taken out in turn by Nynaeve.  Rand dies at the climax of the book, at whose hands I'm not sure. Gawyn perhaps? I think Lan bites it as well.

If this is Alethi script there is a question of why Shallan's notebooks had normal english writing unless it's meant to be two different styles of writing that they use.
Probably the same reason all the Nazis  in WWII movies speak English as well -- so that the audience can understand.  ;)
Shallan's pages are directly relevant to the plot, so they need to be readily understandable. There are also a couple pages by Navani in plain English.  The Shattered Plains battle map comes to mind.  Again, these are directly related to the story.
The Alethi script pages seem like much more of an Easter egg for the hardcore fans, just like the snippet of Dula language in that Interlude chapter.

Did they really have much relevance? As a kindle reader, I couldn't really read them at all due to their small size.

I heard he was going to finish the Wheel of Time, so I started reading his books and liked them.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: WoK maps for audio book people?
« on: September 17, 2010, 08:15:40 AM »
There are maps. There are 29 total pages of art in the book. Now that Brandon is back from his tour I imagine we will work something out for the audiobook listeners. When we do, there will be an announcement in the blog.
Cool, the maps and pics in the kindle edition were too small to see much detail.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: WoK: Shalan - near end of book **SPOILERS**

i am sure she used it to kill her father because the shardblade also cut the soulcaster. Thats why it was cleanly severed. I find a couple possible plot holes in shallans story though. If she has a shardblade (which we assume with evidence she does) than why did she not sell it. The cost would have cleared any debts the family had without question. Also, after she was poisened jasnah fraked out causing shallan to give her the soulcaster. However, because jasnah had always used a fake she would not have freaked and shallen would have not needed to give it to her and she wouldn;t have been exposed.
Why even sell it. Just show up in Jah Kaved or the Shattered Plains and show off the blade and announce she looking for a husband. Highprinces and their heirs would be knocking each other over to court her.

Well it surely means he has some sort of power. I would assume that it's similar to his sister's given the blood relation.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: WoK: Spren and Hoid (spoilers)
« on: September 17, 2010, 04:52:41 AM »
And as far as we've seen thus far, DeathSpren come around when something is dying, they don't bond to people to give people that mastery.

So to be clear, when people mention Deathspren, are they talking about the people with wavy lines where their heads should be?

Just had an interesting thought; Honorspren bond with people to make them surgebinders, (or windrunners if you prefer). Another type of spren (Soulspren? Truthspren perhaps?) bonds with a person allowing them to soulcast.
Now, there is a fabrial that allows you to soulcast without being bonded to a spren, so could there also be a fabrial that allows you to surgebind (or windrun, if you prefer) without being bonded to an honorspren? Perhaps this is related to the glowing glyphs on the Radiants armour, and their brightly glowing shardblades?
I wonder why no Honorspren has bonded with Dalinar? Surely he is honorable enough to draw their notice. Perhaps because he weilded a shardblade, but Syl seemed to dislike it for reasons I don't understand, after all the Knights Radiant all wielded shardblades.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Hopes/Predictions/Wild Theories for Book 2
« on: September 16, 2010, 01:51:54 PM »
I hope that Elhokar matures.  Brandon likes playing with fantasy stereotypes, and one fantasy stereotype is the irredeemably spoiled young king.  Dalinar cares enough about helping Elhokar grow up that it better happen.  Dalinar is kind of the man.

Jasnah was quite defensive of King Taragavarariawhateverhisface.  For being one of the smartest people in Roshar, you'd think she would know something about him.  Is Jasnah evil, and involved with King Traraggvvaiean?

Elokhar has some kind of power, perhaps similar to Jasnah. There's no way the faces in the mirror he's scene with narrow faces are a figment of his imagination.

I think she probably knows about his crazy ethunasia program, how else would she be so convinced that the world's on the brink of disaster. I don't think she knows of his involvement with the assassin.

It might just be that Odium is more detached than we think.

We know that Ati (Ruin) was changed from a caring and compassionate person into an incredibly destructive force. Even if Odium is Rayse, it's possible that his personality changed, too.

Where did we learn this? ???

Speaking about pictures, I have the Kindle version and the Maps and pictures are really small and I can't seem to find a way to zoom in. Am I missing something simple or is it just not possible. Are there good pictures of the map online anywhere?

Ugh. I guess that means that my pretty, numbered TGS will have to wait on my table, gathering dust, until I've read over 1,000 pages of prequel. Sigh.
More like over 7,000 pages. Still, the journey is the fun part.

You're gonna be completely lost.

Brandon's agent read it cold. By the second half of the book he could enjoy it because it was a good story, but he spent a long time before that confused, and even after that there was no way he could appreciate the significance of many events.

As for summaries, I haven't read through any of them so I can't say whether they'd do a good job catching you up. But even if they do a good job getting you up to speed on the plot, plot is only a small part of a book. Why you'd care about what's happening to the characters is something you can get only from the books themselves.

I personally have experienced all but two of the books as audiobooks. It's something I recommend if you have a few hours of mindless activity each week (such as driving or Photoshop work).
Encylcopedia WoT has good chapter by chapter summaries, but reading that would be the equivalent of a small book in and of itself.

So, yeah, it's pretty much impossible. It would be like jumping into the middle of a history of the Napoleonic Wars without knowing anything about the history of Europe.
