Brandon Sanderson / EUOL cover quote did it's job; it created a sale.
« on: January 14, 2008, 08:35:28 AM »
I recently have read no less than three positive reviews for a book named Thunderer by author Felix Gilman and so I purchased the book today. The final selling point was a very nice quote from Brandon regarding the novel on the back cover. So I want to know, is the book really that good?

I guess I will find out when I start reading it this week (After I finish Dave's Worldbinder).

Brandon Sanderson / Is this our B.S? - Premio UPC de Ciencia Ficcion
« on: January 02, 2008, 10:57:12 AM »
maybe I am just out-of-the-loop, but is this award something that our Brandon won?

(taken from SciFi.com)

Brandon Sanderson's story "Defending Elysium" tied with Argentine writer Carlos Gardini d'Angelo's "Belcebu en llamas" for the 2007 Premio UPC de Ciencia Ficcion, sponsored by Spain's Universitat Politicnica de Catalunya; the prize comes with a 6,000 euro award (about $8,500), the largest cash prize in the SF field.

If it is, where can we read this?

Brandon Sanderson / EUOL: Writing question based upon MB2 annotation
« on: September 24, 2007, 10:17:37 PM »
Hello Brandon,

In the chapter one annotation you state: "...in order to have a fight, I need to explain Allomancy."

Now, is it a hardline rule that when writing fantasy fiction across multiple books, that the author needs to go back an explain the basic inner-workings of their world? Is is wrong to just pickup where you left off in the last book? Is this a publishing rule to pander the individuals that are odd enough to NOT begin with book one in a series?

I am really curious about this; sometimes I wish an author would skip the reintroductions of everything. It is also important to me as a author, since I have yet to write any of the planned sequels to my current novels.

Thank you in advance.

Brandon Sanderson / I just finished 'Well of Ascention' 2 minutes ago...
« on: September 11, 2007, 02:58:58 AM »
...Wow, just wow   ;D

What an absolutely fantastic read this book was! I was balled over by the conclusion; I did not see that coming.

Thank you for a wonderful book; well worth my money--and as your other works have done--given me inspiration for my own writing.

(off to find Alcatraz now...)

Thank you again Brandon,

Brandon Sanderson / I helped Brandon make money
« on: January 30, 2007, 01:36:39 AM »
This Saturday, I was walking by the SciFi/Fantasy section in Borders and I watched a older gentleman tentatively pick up one novel after another; he kept putting each book down eventually. I asked him what kind of fantasy he enjoyed and he stated "everything". I then picked up a copy of Elantris and handed it to him and said "I believe that you should read this, I have not read any other book like it". He thanked me and walked away. A few minutes later, I saw him reading the book while standing in the checkout line. Buy a tasty candy bar with the 48 cent I helped you earn!  ;)

Brandon Sanderson / Mistborn - Nota bene, Sui generis!
« on: January 23, 2007, 12:00:45 AM »
I finished Mistborn last week and I wanted to say that it was nota bene (latin, to call attention to something important) and sui generis (latin, literally, of its own kind, a class alone, unique).

I have not been this dysphoric about completing a book in a long time. I was distressed because once it was over, I could no longer roam through the pages of the Final Empire. The pain in waiting for August to come!

In all seriousness, excellent book. Thoroughly enjoyable and worth every penny. Unique, fresh, and immersing. Brandon rightfully deserves his place with Tor and recognition as a professional author. Each novel he creates is a singular, strategic strike against the influx of penned mediocrity in today's fantasy fiction genre.

I did not think Elantris could be equalled; I was glad to be wrong.

Thank you Brandon for your gifts of writing.

Brandon Sanderson / I want info about Goodkind/Brandon's comments
« on: January 16, 2007, 11:25:15 PM »
On the fantasybookspot.com forums, Brandon made this comment:

"I refuse to give any money to Goodkind in any way, through any of his novels, because I don't like the way he treats his fans. "

I want more info (the gritty dirt). What does he do to his fans?

My impression of him is that he is haughty and pompous (I have not read any of his books though). Am I wrong?

Brandon Sanderson / for Brandon - What is your proccess?
« on: January 10, 2007, 09:37:52 PM »
Hello Brandon,

It was very enjoyable to meet you in Seattle, I just wish there had been more people in attendance for you three. Also, I cannot wait to purchase and read Alcatraz!

I have a question that I failed to ask you, what is your writing process? Do you brainstorm on paper or a particular program? Do you outline? What tools do you employ (including any specific software). Thank you for your input in advance.

Sincerely,

R. Schuyler Devin  a.k.a  Shuez  - (I was the guy that had the three panel bookcover page for signing)
