Dan Wells / Thanks Dan
« on: April 02, 2010, 12:36:52 AM »
Hey Dan,

I just wanted to say thanks for coming into class today.  It was really great to see another point of view of writing.

Even if you didn't give me a book.  But I guess I do get a fell point, so I guess that's even better, because then I'll be able to pay for the British version rather than the bad american covers.

Rants and Stuff / Need to brag
« on: December 29, 2009, 07:05:29 AM »
I have this need to brag, because I'm just so super excited!

As of today, I am the soon to be (as soon as I get my check on the fifth, I'll pay for it) the offical owner of the movie reel trailer of my all time favorite movie The Slipper and the Rose.

Now, I know most of you will go, "Huh?  What's that?"  But this movie is amazing, and I am obessed with it.  I've got like almost everything there is to buy related to the movie, have built the fan site, and like tons of other stuff...  and now, unless someone pops up with a copy of the movie reel itself, or else an actual prop from the movie, I think I can offically delcare myself the ultimate fan.  *nods*

Reading Excuses / Quick question
« on: October 04, 2009, 05:48:57 AM »
I am currently working on a fanfic, and I was wondering if you of RE would be willing to accept it as my submission each week.

I normally wouldn't request this of my ffs, but the thing is I'm using this as a testing ground.  I wanted to work with characters who already have a background, and are fleshed out so that I don't have to worry about working that out (I never seem to have a problem in that end.)  Instead, I'm wanting to focus on the things I've been told I struggle with -- including conflict and giving concreate discriptions.  (I also figured it'd be a lot shorter then a full novel.  I don't want to get into one of those until AFTER November.  Nanowrimo takes too much effort and I don't want to abandon a project half way since I'll probably never get back to it if I do.)

I proably wouldn't really start submitting until after then anyways, but I wanted to know ahead of time.

Just a basic head up (in case it'd sway your vote), the fic is based around Labyrinth (and, no, that shouldn't surprise any of you.  :P), and involves Jareth as the mc, Sarah as a vp char, and then an o/c who I've tried to make sure is well fleshed out.

Movies and TV / PotC: On Stranger Tides
« on: September 12, 2009, 05:44:48 AM »
It was announced today.  Personally, I just want to see the bit about the frog.  That sounds uber funny.

I don't know if I'm excited or not.  I mean, I love Jack, but I somehow doubt that they'll be able to pull the movie off without it seeming like "Ugh, it's just ANOTHER sequel".

Rants and Stuff / Why "No offense"
« on: September 08, 2009, 04:43:41 AM »
Why is it that everyone always feels the need to add "no offense" to things they say?  No matter if you say it or not, a person might take offense.  And if you REALLY don't mean to offend someone, you'll either not say whatever it is, or say it nicer.

Sorry, just something I had to get off my chest after something that happened today.  I was hoping maybe someone here might have an idea why.

Books / Maze Runner
« on: August 11, 2009, 07:17:28 PM »
Okay, so at like 5:50 this morning I finished reading Maze Runner by James Dashner and wanted to come on here and tell everyone that when you get the chance, you should totally read it.

The basic plot is that this kid wakes up in this black box with no memory of who he is.  He can remember things like a house, and trees, and such, but not his house, or details of his own life.  The only thing he really remembers is that his name is Thomas.  So, after a half hour suddenly the box (which has been moving) stops, and the top pops open.  he's pulled out and is told pretty much nothing.  He spents the rest of the day trying to figure out what is going on, and getting nowhere, fast.

The only things he's told is that he's the newbie, there's a maze, and that he'll get a tour the next day.  However, that tour is cut short by the arrival of someone in the box.  Thomas thinks nothing of it, but everyone else is freaking -- there's only supposed to be one newbie each month, and supplies once a week.  Well, when the box finally arrives, Alby and Newt, the makeshift leader and second in command freak out.  The box contains a girl, the first one in the two years since Alby has been there, and she's dead.(..or so they think.)

Of course, they all get scared into a new pair of underwear when she suddenly pops up and says "Everything's going to change" and shoves a note into their faces declairing she's going to be the last newbie, ever, before dropping into a coma.

So, then everyone starts thinking that Thomas has something to do with the sudden changes since he was the last newbie to come.  However, Thomas is just struggling to figure out what is going on since no one will answer any of his questions, and he has no memory.

Add into the equasion these creepy monster things that are half animal, half machine, and creepy as all get out to see (the discription includes talk of saws, pinchers, and needles), and, well, this maze is not a fun place to be.

I'm not going to go into a lot of detail after this, 'cause it gets kind of complex, but I will say this:  The book was way good!  I freaking have been reading all night because I couldn't put it down.

Dashner did a really good job of making you feel as frustrated as Thomas every time his questions get ignored.  The ending I felt was slightly deus ex machina -- that is, until I read the very last chatper (a page and a half.  DON'T READ IT UNTIL THE END OR IT WILL DESTROY A LOT!)  I liked the mystery and kept on wanting to skip ahead to find out what the answers were.  I also felt like the characters were pretty well developed, and were their own person.

My only issue is that one of the final plot twists was kind of predictable.  I won't say much beyond that a promise is made, and the promise is brought up like three times, and from the first time it was made, I was sure it wasn't going to be fulfilled.  I also felt like the ending was a bit rushed.  A lot of things happen at once, and I wasn't really able to care about most of them.  Well, those and the fact that it's a series, and I want the next book.

Over all, I thought this was a TON better then 13th reality (which I wasn't even able to finish.)

Rants and Stuff / Writing Group
« on: August 05, 2009, 09:35:10 PM »
A friend of mine and I are intrested in putting together a face-to-face writing group here in provo, and I was wondering who all would be intrested.  I feel it's only fair to warn you though that this wouldn't be your typical writing group.  So far, this is the scheduel we have:

First week: read that months submissions and talk about them.  Standard writing group stuff
Second week: LARPing.  For those who needed we would dress up in costume and act out scenes from group memeber's work to help them figure out the blocking, diolouge and other things they might have issues with.
Third Week: Learning -- each month we would research a different topic and then teach each other about it.  (ie - old vs new look at the fae, sword play, ect)
Fourth Week: I haven't figured this one out yet.  But I'm sure we can work out something.

So, if there's anyone intrested in doing something like this, let me know.  I'm just trying to get a feel for how many people would actually want to do these this.

DISCLAIMER:  While dressing up on week 2 may not be required you we will try to coax you into it.  And if most people do and you do not, we will tease you.  All in good fun though...

Everything Else / Awesome voicemail intros
« on: July 23, 2009, 09:30:35 PM »
Okay, so as a lot of you know I do phone survays, and I listen to a ton of voicemail message.  I've heard everything from the name to a couple of fun ones (as well as the usual, annoying "Hello? *minute pause* Hello?! *another pause*  I still can't hear you... but that's because I'm not home.)

What I wanted was to see what some fun ones other people have seen are.  I think my favorite right now would actually have to be my own.

Hello, you've reached RainbowRose.  The author you are trying to reach is currently off galavanting with my husband.  Leave your name, number and the reason you called with me, and if they get back in time to save my life I'll let her know.  If not... well, you'll know why she didn't call.  Bye bye

Rants and Stuff / Just showing off
« on: July 22, 2009, 05:48:49 AM »
I made a fanvid for the movie Labyrinth (which, as anyone I chat with can tell you, I am obessed with.  Second favorite movie) and I was just wanting to show it off.  I'm rather proud of how it turned out.  So, you know, you can flame it if you want, but I'll totally ignore you.

However, if you have honest suggestions for future videos (I'm not messing with this one.  Too much effort) I'd love to hear them.
