Suggestions Box / Forum Filter
« on: March 15, 2011, 07:06:10 AM »
Hey, just because I'm curious and too lazy to experiment, how strong/strict is the forum filter, and what kind of things does it filter out?

Everything Else / The Many Flavors of Linux
« on: May 27, 2009, 03:06:56 PM »
I've been messing around with Linux recently, and I was wondering if anyone on here was as well, or if anyone has.  I'm curious about opinions, stories, or technical bones to pick.  I'm still a noob, but I've been able to figure most of the things out after a while.   One thing I have to say, I absolutely love the command line.

Also, I stuck this in here because it doesn't really fit into Video Games.

Writing Group / Poetry Publishers
« on: May 21, 2009, 01:56:37 AM »
Okay, I'm back again, finally.

I was wondering if anyone here knew some reputable poetry publishers that I could possibly submit to.  I've been published a couple times since the last time I was on here, but so far only in the my high school's journal and the university nearby.  I figured that I would at least want to give it a shot as far as getting paid for my work goes, and I know a fair amount of you have connections.

Also, I'm interested in learning more about editorial positions and things of that nature, as I served as the poetry editor for my high school's journal, The Argus, and rather liked being involved in that way.  I'd like to start networking in this area.

Any help in either category would be appreciated, and thank you in advance.

Everything Else / Derren Brown: Magician Psychologist and Whatnot
« on: April 28, 2008, 11:18:07 PM »
Okay, so yesterday I was mucking around on the internet, and somehow stumbled onto a recreation of the Milgram experiment conducted by Derren Brown as part of a test for something he was pulling off to see if he could influence normal people into committing robbery without actually telling them to (part of "The Heist").  Long story short what I found was really cool, so I thought I'd share it.  Any comments or discussions?

I myself think I understand the paying with paper and asking for wallet bits, and I'm interested in trying them on my friends.  I think what's important with the paying with paper is distracting them and not allowing them to focus on what you're actually handing them, only that you're giving them something similar to bills.  As for the wallet bit I think the key lies with distracting them, handing them something and while keeping them distracted asking for their wallet, since  I postulate that mentally they only connect giving you back what they took from you, not something that actually belongs to them.  Anyway, that's my two bits.

Rants and Stuff / These Stupid Titles VI
« on: April 21, 2008, 01:38:20 AM »
Okay, I looked for it, searched for it, and couldn't find it, and seeing as how I just leveled up...

I think we've gone a little too long without one of these, seeing as the last one I could find was closed August '06, and I have fond memories of the previous threads.  Therefore I'm reinstating an old TWG tradition; complaining about level titles!

Failed Spell Test Subject(Frog)?! How unimaginative!  A five year old could come up with that!  I'm severely disappointed.  At least make me a mutant cyberbiotic frog or something cool like that.

Music / Suggestions
« on: April 16, 2008, 06:14:46 AM »
Hey, so I've got a lot of music, but lately I've been wanting to find some new stuff, hence this thread.  Basically suggest stuff that you think I might like for me to check out.  I listen to a very wide range of stuff, from classical to metal and pretty much everything in between.  Except most country and rap.  Only suggest that if it's very good, I usually don't like most of it, though I do listen to some.

Brandon Sanderson / Questions for Brandon (non-book related)
« on: April 11, 2008, 06:02:06 AM »
Okay, so I just had one of what my friend and I refer to as  "brain on" experiences, which is where my brain finally processes information I've had for a while.  I've read a couple of your blog posts recently however, and therefore realize that you most likely will not be able to answer these questions for a while.  I figured I had a better chance for answers on the boards though, considering how long it took last time I used email way back when you had more free time.

In this case I am referring to the fact that you went to Korea for your mission.   I actually took up two Korean martial arts about eight months ago, which is why that information has now become extremely interesting to me.  Basically I'm interested to know if you heard about Haidong Gumdo at all on your mission and if so, what?  I'm also interested to know pretty much anything about the culture there and the differences and contrasts between here and there.  Languages, attitudes, whatever.  Think of me as a humorous parody of a dog begging for scraps.

Also if you'd be willing to share any conversion stories you have as well that would be really cool, however I am aware of the sometimes sensitive nature of such.  I am certainly understanding if you don't want to or would rather do so over email, seeing as I am not particularly interested in causing religious controversy on the boards.  Not really my style.

Anyway, thanks in advance for any questions you choose to answer, meanwhile I'll go back to recruiting for your undead army.

Brandon Sanderson / Way of Kings on Amazon
« on: February 11, 2008, 05:18:49 AM »
Recently I've been getting a lot of questions from my friends about when MB3 comes out, so I finally wandered back to Brandon's blog to find out. While I was there I saw something about MB1 in paperback having a reprinting, and followed an Amazon link. I'm poking around for a bit, and lo and behold, I come across this.

I couldn't believe I didn't find this sooner, it was hilarious and kept me laughing for a good long while. Anyway, my question finally. Was this a co-ordinated effort by the TWGers, or was it sporadic? If it was co-ordinated, why wasn't I notified?

Movies and TV / "The Mormons" documentary
« on: May 02, 2007, 05:03:30 AM »
I just heard about this today during seminary, and managed to catch the second part tonight. Overall I was looking forward to it, and hoping that for once it would be an unbiased report. I was dissappointed however, and now I want you guys to put your two bits in. What made me angry about this was that it would mix truths and things that invited the spirit, for me at least, with things that were completely off the wall and downright lies. I'll admit though, that wasn't even what got me the most angry. Instead it was the fact that they had individuals who were excommunicated from the church explaining how and why things are the way they are. What also bugged me was people who had left the church not explaining why, or going into any detail that might have incriminated them and not the church in any way. My overall opinion was that the documentary was a thinly veiled attack on the church and its belief. They rarely if ever had actually representatives of the church, and always seemed to show it as some big faceless organization.

Anyway, what do you guys think? Feel free to agree or dispute what I've said if you think I'm crazy, it wouldn't be the first time.

Brandon Sanderson / Guess What I Just Found
« on: April 17, 2007, 05:38:23 AM »
Okay, so I'm sitting there reading articles online and talking to my friend on google talk, and he happens to mention books, and it gets me onto the subject. Out of curiosity I go and google Mistborn, and poke around for a bit. Lo and behold! I found a Canadian bookseller who is taking pre-orders not only for Well, which was strangely only for the mass market edition, but also for Hero. I thought it was so strange and funny that I had to post it here, and so viola. What say you?

Brandon Sanderson / Well on Amazon
« on: February 01, 2007, 09:57:54 AM »
So I don't know when exactly it was put up, but Well of Ascension is now listed on Amazon with what I assume is the final cover.  Overall it looks pretty awesome, and it was a nice suprise to see it on Brandon's site. We should all go and get orders now.

Anyway, basically this is an awkwardly worded congratulations to Brandon for Amazon already allowing pre-orders.  Something like that anyway.

Video Games / Gears of War
« on: January 23, 2007, 04:53:20 AM »
Hey, so I've heard some really good things about Gears of War lately, and added to the fact that it was the game to finally knock Halo 2 off the number one most played games on Xbox Live I'm seriously considering checking it out. The problem is, some of the people I've talked to it about aren't exactly those whose opinions I respect, so I'm interested in finding out what people here think. So...on with the talking! To those of you who have played it, what are some of the things that you liked or didn't like, and would you reccomend getting it?

Video Games / Have you ever seen anything so glorious?
« on: November 20, 2006, 11:15:59 PM »
Gloriousness

While I don't like the PS3 at all it isn't the reason why I think this is so awesome (though it does help). It's the fact that they do it in front of hundreds of Sony fanboys who have been sitting in line waiting to buy one for 12+ hours.

Brandon Sanderson / Poke--->Brandon
« on: November 13, 2006, 12:13:54 AM »
Brandon, I sent you a reply to your reply from the email I sent you about two weeks ago, and haven't heard back from you. I figured I'd wait a while, you know, since you probably have a ton of fan mail (at least I hope you do) for a reply, but it hasn't come. So, yeah, I was wondering what happened.

Anyway, thats about it.  (In case this was unclear I want you to check your email ;))

Everything Else / Notice
« on: September 18, 2006, 08:37:24 PM »
This is mainly for people who might want to talk to me within the next week or so (crazy I know). My mom is getting married on Friday and her fiancee is coming out  tomorrow or the next day, so yeah; and so I'm pretty much out for at least  a week. Normally I would only mention this after it happened, but eh, weird stuff happens. Anyway, that's pretty much all.
