Rants and Stuff / A Little Request
« on: December 20, 2006, 08:07:27 AM »
Is there anyone in the area that is willing to take a trip with me to Cedar City and back tomorrow (12/20) evening?

Because I've been trying to get everything done with my classes, finals, teaching, packing, my boys' appointments, etc, I've only been getting 3-4 hours of sleep per night. Tonight looks like a long night as well. Since I'm running low on sleep, driving 5-6 hours round trip by is probably not be the best idea in the world. I need someone to act as a relief driver on the trip if/when I get sleepy.

I know MsFish can't do it because she's flying out tomorrow afternoon. Is there someone else who's willing and able to sacrifice their time on the bloody altar of boring roadtrips? I'll pay for a cheap dinner.

Anyone? Bueller?

Rants and Stuff / Random Tech Question
« on: August 02, 2006, 02:18:01 PM »
This question is for the computer-savvy bunch:

Shamir (of RSA fame) presented and published a really cool paper last year on a proven way to break the AES encryption algorithm. The clever part of the method that they used is that they didn't attack the algorithm dead-on. Instead, they retrieved the encryption key by looking at the CPU cache.

So my question is whether there's a way to periodically clear memory caches like the CPU cache and hard drive cache while the computer is running, and whether that would even be a remotely sensible thing to do. (I'm assuming that the caches are cleared when the computer is turned off.) Personally, I don't see how clearing the cache while the computer is running is a good idea in any situation--but I may be wrong.

Rants and Stuff / Java Developer Position Open
« on: February 24, 2006, 09:21:17 PM »
The company I work for is essentially a contracting company: they hire employees, then contract out the work we do to other companies.

Right now, my company has a couple of Java Developer positions open. You'll have to prove that you actually know Java, but the job will pay decent and there's benefits to boot.

The actual workplace is in the SLC area, and you'd most likely be contracted out to work for the VA.

Anyone interested?

How dare you! It's the rudest thing that's ever been perpetrated from this website!

To only have that once and then never mention it again? Where is your sense of honor? Of chivalry? Of competetion?

The fun of it all. The cutesy animals. The not-so-cutesy creatures. Fish's rats and Fell's squirrels.

Yup. You know what I mean, you sadists. It's horrific. It's torture.

Once wasn't enough. I need to learn more.

Can we play Magic again? Please?

Scholastic and Bloomsbury released the covers for the book yesterday:

The American Cover
and
The UK Children's Cover

So, any predictions?

From the covers, I'd guess that Dumbledore is going to be taking a more active roll in Harry's life in this next book.

Rants and Stuff / Yahoo Mail is being sinister

For those of you with Yahoo email accounts:

Am I the only one who keeps getting file-download box every time I try to log in? I'm just a little creeped out by the fact that there's a file that is trying to infiltrate my computer every time I go to check my email.
