Video Games / Re: Viva la Revolution
« on: April 27, 2006, 03:58:29 PM »
Hey, just found this thread and read through it.

Personaly I think everyone will just keep calling it the Revolution.  Kind of like the Smith Family Living Center (at BYU).  You can change the name, but noone stoped calling it the SiFLiCk.

Oh, and I'll be at E3 this year.  I'll let you know what I see from there.  I'll be all over Nintendo's booth with my DS to see what they have broadcasting from their WiFi stations there.  I'll just have to stop by the Wii area as well.

-Always get out of the water when you hear theme music.
"Jaws" "Deep Blue Sea" and basicly any horror movie

-Noone will ever be able to say "I have a bad feeling about this" ever again.
 (any movie after Star Wars)

-Lesbians make great sun screen.
 "Jesus Christ, Vampire Hunter"
(OK, so most of you probably won't understand that one unless  you have really strange friends with even stranger movies.)

Role-Playing Games / Re: Nerdery 36: Good Evil Villains
« on: April 26, 2006, 02:52:50 PM »
While I whole heartedly agree that petty criminals not only see their wrongdoing as evil, but revel in that evil, I must disagree that a true "villain" could gather as much power as makes a gaming session interesting without having to justify himself to the population in general.

Anakin and Palpatine justified their totalitarianism and power grab under the public pretence of bringing order to the chaos.  They went about it in methods that also fulfilled their own goals of revenge upon the Jedi, but their justification was altruistic.

Also, I'm talking generalizations for gaming villains.  If we were to remove all villains who were evil for the sake of being evil and only limited ourselves to those who are evil because of their perspective we would again be falling into predictable patterns and create boring stories.  I'm creating general rules with which a creative game master can forge an entertaining villain.  I still use the occasional wizard who is killing to steal souls that he might power a death machine and conquer the world.  Or the succubus who is a few family members short of collecting the full set for revenge.

Oooo.  Villains is something of a speciality for me.  I've always enjoyed creating or playing a bad guy.

My personal credo is "Make the bad guy think he's right."  I find nothing is more terrifying than a villain who thinks he is doing the right thing.  Think of Emperor Palpatine or Darth Vader.  They were just trying to establish galactic order and end this war that has been going on forever.

And bonus points if you make the players stop and have to think about what they are doing.

What if the 'bad guy' is a Necromancer who is using most of a villages population as human sacrifices?  No contest, kill him before he kills more innocents.  But what if this Necromancer were researching methods of overcoming a supernatural plague that could wipe out half the living population of the world?  Do you still defeat him?  Do you use the research that cost hundreds or thousands of lives?

The only exception to this rule is the insane villain.  (Think Kefka or Sephiroth.)  When faced with their own death or limitations they simply snap.  They don't have to think they are right.

Woo hoo!  I was special for a few moments!

The quote is from William Shakespeare's "The Tragedy of King Richard The Third".  I really like the monologue at the beginning.  Though I was very tempted to throw another different quote in there that very few people would recognize.

Quote
You are
What you do
When it counts.

Find the book that goes with that quote and you will have one of the best Sci-Fi books ever.

Equilibrium was a fun movie that was also largely overlooked.

*quietly pokes his head in*

So, AM I number 500?  I really don't care one way or the other, but it'd be interesting to know.

It's actualy 32 players, as many Xboxes as you want.  32 boxes with one player each is perfectly OK.

If you are having problems getting enough people together for a game, check out www.teamxlink.co.uk and download Kai.  It allows you to play system link games over the internet.  My brother and I play Splinter Cell and Halo from 3000 miles away on a 'system link' game.

Oh, why not.  It was requested of me to post something.

I'm Kirjath Emet.  No, that's not my real name, but you can search and put together what it means if you want.  I'm MsFish's DM's brother, so that's where I heard of this site from.  I actually did attend BYU, but I'm living in San Francisco, California.  I'm not really from anywhere.  I grew up a military brat, so I was born in Germany and have lived all over the world.

I graduated from BYU with a degree in Computer Science and worked with Disney for a while before getting my dream job working in a video game company.  Yes, I'm fortunate and yes I know it.  However there was A LOT of work and study that went into my getting this job, so you can't say I was all that lucky.... more like stubborn.

My interests are WAY too varied to try to list here.  Suffice it to say that I do a great deal of role-playing, video games, table top gaming, board games, reading and occasionally writing.

I'm a listener/watcher so I'll probably not post much.  Though I do post more on a few other boards that are easy to find if you search for them.  I'll contribute when I can, and simply read while I can't.

*takes a short bow*

Thank you.
