Brandon Sanderson / Re: Mistborn on Top 100 SFF novels of All Time!
« on: August 19, 2011, 12:04:37 AM »
I don't know, I am seeing a lot of titles that should not be there. Brandon's ability to tell a story in an interesting way, while coming up with a cool and engaging world, creating believable characters, and twisting the plot to keep the readers on their toes are things I don't see in at least 20-30 of the books on the list, and I haven't even read all of them / the rest.

Not to mention that those books are all from at least a dozen different branches of the SFF genre, and people really shouldn't be comparing them. It is, I think, a poor decision to put The Wheel of Time next to American Gods, next to Small Gods. Not only are they very different in nature, but they are not even of the same format! The Wheel of Time is unfinished and 12 books long, while Small Gods is a single book that is very loosely related to another, what, 30 that take place within the same world?

Running Mythwalker chapters? Have I missed some big announcement?

Wait. Wasn't Mythwalker the "old name", so speak, of Warbreaker? Those are done, Brandon posted the last one just a couple of days ago... I feel a little lost, Peter, save me like Jesus!

Should be The Way of Kings, right? I don't think there is anything else left. So if that's the case, when should we expect to see them come up? I think by the time I got to Brandon's annotations, all of Elantris' and Mistborn's ones have been out, and Warbreaker's ones were just coming out, so I have no idea how long it takes for a new book's commentary to come out after the old one's have been all published.

This art is gorgeous! Do you plan on releasing more of it to the general public, or do I need to go whip out the credit card? :)

Brandon Sanderson / Re: **SPOILERS** Shards: Power and Character
« on: June 24, 2011, 07:23:37 AM »
I am  almost 100% certain that Brandon said somewhere that the Shards (the actual Shards, not the people who hold them) have a personality of their own, so to speak. It is in Ruin's nature to destroy things. It is in Endowment's nature to... well, not to endow, I guess; but something like it. He also said that people who take on those Shards - the Shardholders - have their own personalities twisted by the power of the Shards. So just like Ati was a kind man turned vile by Ruin, Loras could have been a twisted criminal turned selfless by Preservation.

I always assumed the glowing orbs represented Stormlight somehow. Jasnah did think Shallan stupid for attempting to enter Shadesmar with only one infused sphere somewhere in the last chapter, I think. And Shallan did attempt her first soulcasting with quite a few spheres, which she later noted had gone dun.

Preservation-infused Vin and Ruin killed each other off because their Shards' essences were opposite. Honor and Odium could have a showdown, I think.

Do you have a more specific question in mind?

The Almighty was Honor. His human name was Tanavast, and the name the Ardents have given him is, as far as we can tell, a product of their religion. I don't remember the actual name, but it was symmetric, like everything holy. I suspect it was artificially designed just to be the holiest of names - both in form and meaning.

Before we even start discussing your character choices, I must ask - why? What makes you think that this is the direction the series is going?

While you overall write-up is sound, happyman, I should mention that it is a popular and credible theory that the Reod was caused by Rayse (or was it Reyse?) when he killed Aona.  A minor detail, but every piece of knowledge is valuable.

Haven't seen anything like that, but I am considering making one now that you mentioned it. No promises, but if I find myself with too much free time on my hands...

You've been doing good work, Ink. Note nearly as much as if I had you imprisoned in my basement with Brandon to write and give you advice, but good work nonetheless.
