Books / Re: What are you reading, part 3
« on: December 16, 2010, 04:36:00 AM »
I've been catching up on the Dresden Files, I like them better when I have the previous one still in my head.
I am also reading the Malazan books, though I find them slow going. I can't just jump through them while keeping an eye on the kids. They require concentration.
I just moved to a much bigger place so I am enjoying the new library system.

I think it is Scholastic's fault it didn't sell. They didn't market it at all. Even in their monthly flyer they send to parents I only saw the first book twice and the second once. If they don't advertise it, it won't sell.
My neighbor, a sixth grade teacher, read the book to her students as part of studying optics. They loved it. It is too bad the publisher didn't make more of an effort.

Books / Re: review: Zoe's Tale

When I started Zoe's Tale I didn't realize it was (sort of) a continuation of Old Man's War. I haven't gotten to The Last Colony yet, but I'm glad to hear that it might be better. I enjoyed ZT, but I would like the different perspective now that I just finished The Ghost Brigades. And I think any book that might encourage more young women to read SF is a good thing.

I had a baby! Baby Nathan was born on March 30 at 8 lbs 9 oz. I have not posted much and that trend will continue, but I have to brag.

I read them several times when I was a teenager, raiding my father's books. I liked them but I don't remember much. I like Scalzi, so maybe I will need to go back to them.

Our favorite is Maynard Moose, but perhaps you don't have to placate numerous small children. Our library has a whole section. Classics, YA and children's books. They are great, though I can't remember the publisher (or whatever you would call the people making these things.) I think they are much better for the library because they are harder to damage than CDs. No Wheel of Time though, I don't think they have enough memory.

Our library has these. They are great for car trips.

I have started mistrusting any book with a quote from Terry Brooks on it.

Books / Re: Fantasy girls, where are you?
« on: February 03, 2010, 10:14:37 PM »
I think when we are talking fantasy if we pull out all the urban fantasy readers the female percentage will drop. From my own experience epic fantasy readers are mostly male. That is in my own age range of course, (I am in my late 30s). I think younger women are reading more fantasy because it is more available and acceptable now than it was when I started reading thirty years ago.

I've noticed YA books are really the place to look if you want good, well written female protagonists. I am assuming the trend will push upward to the "adult" books. I hope it gets more girls to read SF/fantasy. I felt incredibly alone as a teenage female fantasy fan. Now there are legions of us and our numbers are growing. It makes me happy.

I've only read Old Man's War and Zoe's Tale and I liked them both. They both have a Heinlein feel to them, and I like that. Zoe's Tale is meant for a YA audience and is not military like Old Man's War. They are both worth your time to read. One of these days I'll get to the others.

Books / Re: What is the best and/or worst recent book you've read?
« on: January 31, 2010, 01:19:05 AM »
I am scavenging through the library because I have already spent too much money on books. I found one called The Still by David Feintuch.
I don't think I've ever disliked a main character so much. The blurb on the back said it was a story of the protagonist leaving the life of a spoiled nobleman's son and earning respect, blah blah blah. After a couple of chapters I skipped ahead and read the last few. Nope, he was still as irritating and annoying as in the first few. I don't know how he changed but I haven't been that bothered by a bad book in a while. I lay in bed that night thinking of all the ways it was awful. I had to take melatonin to get to sleep.

Scalzi's blog is moderately famous. He has been doing it for a long time.  He is at http://whatever.scalzi.com.  He posts often and is entertaining.

I've read the Alera Codex, Jim Butcher's fantasy series. Not the best, but not awful either. They definitely have an ending in sight. The last one just came out, but I haven't read it yet. I liked them better as the series went along.

I'm cheap, but I like to lend books, so I use those address stickers that charities send to guilt you into sending them money.  At least that way when I lend a book I know guilt will follow that person until they return it. We recently got a package of two books my husband lent his cousin, 6 months ago. It works well for books kids take to Grandma's or school too.
