Brandon Sanderson / Re: Lightsong (Blog Post Reference)
« on: June 17, 2008, 02:10:30 AM »
I personally loved the Lightsong character.  He was one of my favourite parts about the book, and I always looked forward to the chapters about him.  I also think that he might be even more interesting if he was even more rebellious.  But even though I think it may be more interesting.. I don't know if the story needs it.  He seemed pretty perfect the way he was.

There is also one of the first fights with Kel.  Where he's fighting the (can't remember the word Sanderson uses) mistborn assassins.  He uses a paperweight or something, and through various skilled use of pushing and pulling, ends up taking out most of the attackers.  At least, that's what I remember.  I can't check my book as it's packed away.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: End of MB2 ****SPOILERS****
« on: February 29, 2008, 02:17:53 AM »
I think that's how I read the ending too the first time through... That the Well gave him powers, and the metal was just pewter, which helped him cope with the injury.  If I remember right (I'd check the book but I'm in the process of packing and have already packed all my books away)he only ate the one metal... So if it was one that made him a mistborn, why did his injury get better, if all it did was give him the power.  If he didn't have pewter, even if he was mistborn, he wouldn't have the strength to be better.

But then, when mistborn were first created, I'm assuming that the power wasn't given up... So who knows if mistborn would be created if the power was given up.

A lot of assumptions,  usually I pull the books out during thoughts like this, but it's in the middle of a taped up box right now.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Mistborn 3 Cover (Slight Spoilers for Mistborn 2)

I know that, I just said that I liked the more "realistic" face they put on her at first.  All I said was that I was tired of seeing the "perfect feminine beauty" as all the heroines in other fantasy culture.  Why do they ALL have to be perfect and pretty, and by today's standards, often as not, as well.  With small noses, pale skin,  dark hair, and rosey lips...   Just my preference...   I'm kinda sick of the stereotypes...  I don't really picture her as looking that way..

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Bookplates Question

I like the persoanlized ideas the best, though I think you should always have an option for a single bookplate.  I don't have much need for multiple ones, especially in numbers as great as 4, as I've already got Mistborn signed, and am going to be hoping to get your Elantris book through the website for my birthday (perfect timing I must say, as my Birthday is in mid-march, soon as it's up the link will be going out to all my family).  I don't really go for non-personalized stuff.  I probably won't ever resell, and that's the only reason I can see for a general signing.  I think it's much cooler to have something personally signed.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: How did you find out about Brandon Sanderson?
« on: January 28, 2008, 06:24:13 PM »
I have to admit I'd never even heard of Brandon Sanderson before Harriet announce on dragonmount.com that he was who she had chosen to finish the Wheel of Time series.

I'm very picky with my fantasy writers.  I find that while some have good concepts, they tend to almost forget that while the book can be all bout magic, and strange enigmatic problems, you need people to tell the story through, generally.  I find some books particularly painful to read, and before Brandon, there were only 3 authors that were able to get me to hang onto their every word, and finish 800 page books in a single weekend.

When I picked up Brandon's first book, I ,honestly, thought I would have to force myself through another mediocre writer, in an attempt to find out more about his writing style, so that Wheel of Time 12 wouldn't be a complete shock.  I have to say I was more than simply pleasantly surprised.  I couldn't put the book down.

I started with Mistborn, finished very quickly, and picked up Well of Ascension.  Couldn't find Elantris anywhere, so I downloaded Warbreaker, and finished in a matter of days.  I'm now desperately awaiting WoT12, Mistborn 3, and am desperately hoping for a Warbreaker sequel, as I need to know what happens next!

Brandon Sanderson is now part of an elite group of writers that I will be keeping close tabs on, waiting for new books, preordering if necessary.  He came around just in time, as the other writers I enjoy have just finished their series.

I'm not too sure how I'd feel about this.  One.. It's not REALLY Brandon's choice.  He doesn't own the Wheel of Time world.  He's not writing the book of his own accord, he was hired to complete the series by the person who is now (I'm assuming) in charge of the Wheel of Time franchise.  Unless Harriet decides she wants more Wheel of Time stories, or releases the information for Brandon to write what he wants in the world, I don't think there's anything he could do, even if he wanted to.

Granted, I don't know how any of this stuff actually works.. this is all just what I'm assuming.

Even if he was given permission, I still don't know how I'd feel about it.. Finishing the last of the series as an homage to Robert Jordan, so that his fans can see the work that he was trying to finish for them despite being terminally ill..  That's on thing.  Deciding to take that world, and expand on it even more.. I don't know if I'd be comfortable with that.  I wanted to read more about it as much as anyone.  Wanted to read more on the histories, more of the battles that are mentioned and flashed back to.  And was definitely interested in some of the spin-offs Jordan mentioned.  But without Jordan actually writing them.. It wouldn't be the same.

I have to say that I personally disagree.  I like the overall cover, however, I liked how Vin was portrayed on the covers of the other books.  I liked the more "realistic" artwork, not that this one isn't realistic.  Maybe it's mostly the purple, it's a pretty colour, but it really seems to draw my attention in a way that I personally don't particularly like, unless that's the point of it.  I personally liked what everyone is calling "ugly" Vin.  I thought it was great to have a more realistic looking character, rather than the perfect complexion, pale faced rosy lipped feminine characters you often see elsewhere in the fantasy genre.

Like the over all concept, not a huge fan of how it was implemented :)
