Ah, man, that's almost exactly like the opening to my latest novel!

No, seriously, whenever I start feeling like my writing is horrible, all I need to do is swing over the this website, and I'll realize it really isn't that bad.  ;)

Well, this link says he's writing, directing, and producing it. So hopefully it won't be a miss.

That's true, about him focusing on character rather than special effects. And about it appealing to people who wouldn't watch Avatar otherwise, because it's a cartoon. I forget about that silly prejudice at times, because I don't have it, and happen to like cartoons. ;)

This came through on my Utah Children's Writers yahoo list. It's not only for children's writers, though--any young, ambitious, creative writer. It seems more of a position for someone still in school or just graduated, and is in Salt Lake.

SEEKING WRITERS’ ASSISTANT/APPRENTICE

YOU desperately want to be a professional creative writer – anything
other than poetry. You are dedicated to your craft and willing to
work ridiculously hard to reach your goal. You know that you have
chosen a difficult career path…but one that offers a most fulfilling
future.

WE are professional creative writers, based here in Salt Lake City UT
(our office is in the Avenues neighborhood) , working in the arenas of
television, film, fiction, and stage. Some of our recent credits
include

sole screenwriters on a 2006 Paramount feature film

a pilot script for the producers of American Idol

currently writing a television daytime drama

several New York Times young adult fiction bestsellers

You can see that we are more than legit, with impeccable credentials
and outstanding contacts at publishers, production companies, and
film/TV producers and studios. We are represented by Paradigm in all
mediums. We are currently seeking an assistant/apprentice who will
be devoted to us and our work, while also learning our business. Our
expertise, skills, and contacts can help launch your own career as a
writer in your chosen genre. Following a trial period with us of
several months, we’ll read, critique, and help you hone your work,
and ultimately even help get it to the right editors, publishers, and
agents.

THESE SKILLS will be crucial to you:

· Outstanding organizational, research, editing, and computer
skills

· A powerful work ethic, creativity, and writing skills

· The abilities to be rock-steady under pressure, and to juggle
assignments effectively

· Punctuality, dependability, cheerfulness, and a real love for
words

DO NOT apply for this salaried position if:
you don’t have at least two years of college (and still in school),
or a B.A.
you are unwilling to work more than the usual 9 to 5 if needed. We
work far more than that; we expect you will, too
you couldn’t comfortably work on a chick-lit novel by e.g. Jennifer
Weiner, or a film script that could ultimately be rated PG-13 or R.

TO APPLY, please send
· Outstanding cover letter explaining why this is a perfect job
for you, and resume

· If we are interested, we’ll ask to read a brief (under 500
words, no poetry!) creative writing sample.

· References that can be checked.

We’re looking at a salary in the $24,000 a year range. Again, you
must be willing to work more than the usual Monday to Friday, 9 to 5
regimen, since we work more than that. too. Email your cover letter
and resume (we will ask you for a writing sample if interested) to
[email protected].

Lots and lots of laundry makes me grumpy. It's my own fault, for buying and wearing all of them, but still. Grumble, grumble, grumble.

I'm going to be like the cartoon characters and wear the same thing everyday.

Movies and TV / Avatar Movie by Shyamalan
« on: January 10, 2007, 12:00:18 AM »
M. Night Shyamalan is going to adapt the popular Nickelodeon TV Series into a live-action film. No, I'm not joking! (Link courtesy of Mad Dr. Jeffe.)

I have mixed feelings about this. I'm a fan of Shyamalan's work, and a major fan of the TV Series. But the series has done it so well, do we really need a live-action version? What can it add, except a lot of CGI effects for the "bending"? And sometimes Shyamalan lets his ego get the better of him, and his work suffers. However, he is finally outsourcing for his material, and that could be a good move.

Who knows. It may be awhile until we see this, since the article pointed out at the end that Avatar might not even be the next project Shyamalan takes on. Here's hoping if it does come to life, it's good.

Yeah, get out your time machine and go back and try to entertain me more! Definitely a good reason to risk messing up the space/time continuum.  ;)

I know. I was waiting for Tage and Fish to finish and by that point I was starving.

They had a really great time, though, so I was happy for them. And they showed me some of their cards, which were very cool. It sounded like you all put a lot of hard work into it, and it came off really well. So good for you!

Fell, I put pictures and some commentary up in my livejournal regarding New Year's Eve. Since you don't have an lj account, I'll put a link here so you can download the pics if you want. You should show your wife, too--I really like Dawn.  It sure was fun! :)
