Brandon Sanderson / Re: Mistborn 3 Cover (Slight Spoilers for Mistborn 2)
« on: January 15, 2008, 02:17:52 AM »
The artist's job is to grab the attention of a buyer, not to perfectly portray the story. It annoys me sometimes, but I totally understand why they do it. And you're right, the art's not to hang on the wall, it's to sit on a bookself, and the artist paints what the publishers tell them to.

The artist can only offer the publisher multiple concept drawings. Painting multiple covers would cause an artist to go bankrupt. And even after the artist submits the concepts, the publishers have them change and alter them all the time. A lot of times what the publisher chooses isn't even what the artist would have chosen themselves.

Just finished Iron Kissed, by Patricia Briggs. A Lot of fun if you like werewolves. And I'm working on Sabriel, by Garth Nix.

Books / Re: How many books to do you read?
« on: January 13, 2008, 11:13:07 AM »
Haha... wow, ummm, anywhere from 5 to 10(or more), no joke. I'm not too picky about what I read, but I tend to only read something when I'm in the mood for it, and my mood can change from hour to hour. So reading lots of books at the same time guarantees I'll never get bored!

I'm not really sure what I think about this. I like Harry Potter (though I've yet to read the final book), but I really don't like it when things keep getting dragged out. It seems a lot of Authors are falling into this problem nowadays. You end up with 10+ book series, spin-off books, Prequels, second series....third series, and at that point I think you should just let it rest in peace and move on to something new.

Not that I'm saying that that's what would happen if she wrote an eighth book, but I'd rather her not drag it out and start something new.

Books / Re: review: Blood Bound
« on: January 10, 2008, 06:14:32 AM »
Hey, Blood Bound! There's something about they Mercy Thompson novels that I just love.

I agree with your review, the book was a lot tighter than the other one, and the plot wasn't so all over the place. Although, I think I liked the first one better, still. I really liked the Werewolf society she created, I thought it was interesting and creative. But I felt that the Vampires were about as generic as they got. I like Stefen, don't get me wrong, but when it came to their workings and society there wasn't anything that new or different.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: I want info about Goodkind/Brandon's comments
« on: December 16, 2007, 11:35:23 AM »
Wow. You know, the interview(?) started off so normal, but then Goodkind's opinion of himself escalated until he made himself out to be a god.

I'm a bit in the minority here, too, though on a different viewpoint. I tried reading Wizards First Rule, but after the first one or two hundred pages I finally gave up. I thought it was boring, dry, and predictable. Not to mention the characters felt like paper cut outs... How was it he beathed life into a dead genre? To which he doesn't belonged, he claims, yet says he revived. Yeah...

I didn't really care for reading when I was really little, and as hard as it is for me to admit, what got me into it was Animorphs. How my brothers loved to make fun of me. Yes, the story of my life.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: How did you find out about Brandon Sanderson?
« on: December 14, 2007, 09:29:43 AM »
I was browsing in B. Dalton and saw Elantris stting on the new release shelf. Read the inside flap, thought it sounded interesting, but didn't have the cash to buy an adult hardback. Or any hardback, for that matter.

A couple months later I was at the library and miraculously remebered the name of the book. Yup, miraculous, because this is the girl that has to run up from the basement three times to ask 'Mom, what did you need from food storage again?" And that's that. Brandon became my favorite author.

Brandon Sanderson / A gift for Sanderson!
« on: November 26, 2007, 05:20:30 AM »
Alrighty, so here's a gift for ya, Brandon, cause I consider all fan art gifts to the author, it's the best way an artist has of saying 'Thanks for writing an awesome book!"

Anyway, Vin from Mistborn (and I promised myself I wouldn't draw Vin, too.)

Haha! Conrates FTH! Man, I don't know how people like you pump out so many words so quickly! It puts me in awe and makes me sick at the same time (in a good way, of course!)

Oh, Haha! I was reading The Innocent Mage. I actually kind of liked it, until the end, and then I didn't even finished it(30 pages to go, how sad is that?) The characters were the most interesting thing. There wasn't really any plot, and when there was, that's when I started to dislike it, actually. I find it all quite funny.

Let's see, I'm reading New Moon, my loving sister actually went out and bought it for me when I was feeling sick! How sweet! And Flowers For Algernon. Awesome book!

Ah, true, true. My library ispart of my school, so I can usually pop in there right after class. So yeah, I guess it would be good for a lot of people.

Nice. I like the angle. Although I few things look off, like the door.

What program are you using?

Yeah, but is spending ten minutes looking for the book you want really any worse than waiting two days for it to arrive in the mail? Plus you can just have everything you want sent to the hold shelve if you really want, then you don't have to bother looking for it. Although I might be biased, I love book browsing.

That sounds expensive, though. If I was going to pay that much for a book I'd just buy it.
