Ah. For some reason I never posted in here, even though I'm listed 5th on the member list...

I'm Peter Ahlstrom. 27 years old...a former editor of The Leading Edge. From Ohio. Currently living in the Los Angeles area. After some fumbling around in New York and 6 months teaching English in Japan, I got a job copyediting at TOKYOPOP, which I thoroughly enjoy. TOKYOPOP publishes manga, and not coincidentally I like manga a lot. I also like anime and science fiction and fantasy novels...

I ride a unicycle. And I'm always on the lookout for...girls close to my height of 6'2.5" >_> Blood type...I seriously don't know what my blood type is.

I thought it was obvious Sidious and Palpatine were the same person from the beginning.  ???

meters and yards are roughly equivalent, like a dollar is roughly 100 yen...except the exact ratio never changes, in the case of meters and yards.

I think it's fine to say a meter is roughly a yard, but it's a bit weird to imagine someone nowadays who needs to be told what a meter is.

CJ Cherryh updates hers almost every day... I dunno, update whenever you have something to say. But I'm thinking 2-3 times a week would be a good frequency for when to have things to say. ;)

I'm not so interested in Cherryh's ice-skaing lessons; it's more interesting when she talks about the writing.

For a while in this forum you were posting in that update thread, with how many pages you wrote per session. Mundane mechanical details like that can actually be interesting to the public.

You'll have to write something with giant robots in it.

When are you going to update your blog?

articles make comparison to Van Doren quite often. I doubt many people think Ken's cheating though.

But there is this: http://www.dailyhog.com/jeopardy_07212004_9223.asp

happy birthday, people I don't (I think) know...

We had a company party Saturday night at the Buca di Beppo in San Diego. It sure was loud.

For those who didn't notice, the season's over, and Ken took $75,000 on the final day, after tying the record of $52,000 three times before (what a tease). $1.3 million +. He'll be back for more episodes in September.

Amazing. I would've liked to've seen that episode. On Friday I was still entombed in the depths of Comic-Con though. Alas.

Writing Group / Re: inventing regional accents

k, yeah, I need some help with this.

Version 1.0 of Peks has a very simple spoken accent expression. "You" became "ya" and "your" and "You're" both became "yer"
<snip>
is it too much or over the top if I just change the "ou" dipthong found in "you" to an "uh" sound? thus "you're" becomes "yer" and "your" becomes more of a "yore." This vague rule is applied to all 'ou' combos in this particular group's speach.

Ah...huh? I'm confused. In the dialect of English I was raised with, "your" and "you're" sound the same...exactly like "yore" as in "days of yore." So I'm really not sure what you're saying...

Hm...looking on m-w.com, you're and your have the same pronunciations listed in the same order, except for an extra one for "you're" making it sound like "you" with an "er" sound added on the end.

I've seen accents before using a "yore" spelling for "your" and I've never been able to figure out how it differs from the usual "your" pronunciation. But on m-w only the 3rd and 4th pronunciations of "your" and "you're" are shared by "yore." Personally I'd say that the vowel of "your" and "you're" tends to neutralize in plain speech, but when I emphasize the word for some reason ("You're the one who volunteered; this is all your fault.") it definitely sounds like "yore."
