I'll try to do a book review by the end of this week. Probably will be The Amulet of Samarkand, perhaps The Big Book of Bright Ideas. I can't make any promises at this point, though.

I haven't even heard of these Beatrice Letters! I'm going to have to track down a copy and read and see if I have a similar conclusion to Karen's.

I never thought of Beatrice being a younger sister. It could be a possibility--although the later books made me think that Lemony Snicket is alive at the same time as the Baudelaires, because all of his sibilings are contemporary (rather than LS researching the Baudelaires long after they are dead, which is what the first books led me to believe). And, if LS is a contemporary of the Baudelaires and a grown man, it would be really weird for him to be in love with their younger sister (younger then Sunny). Not to mention really, really wrong.  :o

But two Beatrice's. That's also an interesting idea. Then one could be the mother, and one could be a sister.

I can't give any more opinion on that until I get ahold of these Beatrice Letters.

The Big Book of Bright Ideas by Sandra Kring. My mom gave it to me. She rarely recommends books to me--I think she gave me this one beause it is about an unusually creative child, which I was (or at least she thinks I was).

Not fantasy nor YA (my usual fare), but very well-written first-person memoir-like fiction. I love Kring's description and details. It has a child protagonist but my guess is that it will deal with "adult themes" by the end and that's why it is marketed as mainstream fiction. I'm actually kind of curious why it wouldn't be considered YA or MG--though it could simply be the fact that often mainstream makes more $ (at least larger advances, I've heard). I'll probably write a review/article about it when I finish.

Oh, and K_B--I read The Amulet of Samarkand and I really liked it. ;D I'm going to see if my local library in California has the second one.

Yes, I remember that happening a couple of times. Well, I started the other thread, so perhaps I should go promote it.  ;)

I had to read this for my college American literature class. Normally, I don't like this kind of book. For some reason, though, I came away affected, disturbed, and impressed. And to this day, though I'm not sure why, I still think highly of it.

I'm interested in seeing it, after your good review. It would be nice if they didn't ruin a good book.

Uh, just so you know, we usually don't re-start a thread until the original gets locked by a moderator.

So mods: someone lock the other Happy Thread so we don't have confusion and mass hysteria.  ;)

Cookie: Do you think the new Lisa is hot?
Janitor: I'm not allowed to answer that, due to the fact that I'm 40.

I'm also just starting on rereading the Bartimaes Trilogy, a child's series about a demon summoner in an alternate world's version of England.

I've been meaning to read the Bartimaes Trilogy FOREVER (at least a year). I actually have the library book with me--but very little time to read at present. If you're re-reading it, it must be pretty good. I've heard good things about it--we'll see what I think.

I also liked Spindle's End. But it is long--not nearly as tight as her other books. Feels more "fairytale" to me in that it meanders and there's some bizzare magical happenings.

Whoever it was that wrote the review on Uglies...I need one of you people to write them for me. PLEASE!?? :-[

Wow. I've never had a request. It makes me feel...almost special.  ;)

I'll be happy to, but it's going to have to wait. I'm in California and can't get library books--plus it leads to unwanted battles when I spend too much time reading while home visiting my parents.

As for YOU writing the review, I think that's a great idea! Keep trying! If you beat me to it, I won't mind (there are plenty of books out there to review). I was scared at first to write a review, too--I just had to break down and do it. Now, I think it's fun.

Here are two poems I wrote last Saturday, while I was doing laundry. For some reason the mad rush to get ready to leave on vacation made my brain start thinking in free verse fragments, rather than long sentences.  The situation wasn't helped by the fact that I get really REALLY anal when doing my laundry.

Thoughts on Laundry

In Heaven
your favorite clothes NEVER

shrink

or wrinkle.

Classic Pieces

My favorite purple tee
has a sparkly message written across the front:

Beach Club

Shirts with the year they were bought
displayed prominently on the front
are a real quick way to let people know
exactly how old your clothes are.
Do not invest
in these.

I'm Bloody Ethel Bonney! Yarrgh!!!

How I got "Bloody" and the description of "living for the fighting," I don't know. I didn't pick the violent answers--I think. Oh well. The "Bonney" and "unpredictable" part seems right.

As a pirate, I also appear to be related to Gemm.  ;)
