Right off the bat this bothered me "He paused. What had he been doing? "
Who is asking this question? I know that it can either be Ichabod himself, in which we're seeing into his head, as some flavor of omniscient POV, or it can be the narrator asking the question of the reader.
In the first case it bugs me because the rest of the scene to that point didn't imply that we had an omniscient POV, merely a floating camera POV.
In the second case, if it's Ichabod's POV, how exactly were we getting the floating camera information before?
