Books / Re: Hard SF recommendations
« on: April 29, 2010, 11:43:43 PM »
Have you read Arthur C. Clarke? His is the hardest SF I've read. I mean, the man came up with the idea of geostationary communications satellites, and we're still working on his space elevator concept. The main problem with the science in his books is that they were written in an era when America still cared about space exploration, so he quite overestimated the progress of space technology. (2001: A Space Odyssey is about a manned mission to Saturn...in 2001.)

Everything Else / Re: Vader vs Batman

The fact is, however, that Batman doesn't lose. This is partly because he is obsessive-compulsive to the point of preparation. Being unprepared can end with criminals escaping because he didn't anticipate something. The moment Batman learned about the Force, he'd be working on finding ways to combat, contain, or nullify it through technology or other means. Heck, if this is taking place in the Star Wars galaxy, it's possible he could get his hands on a JK-13 "Jedi Killer" droid...

Well, if you want to give Batman access to Star Wars technology, then obviously he stands a chance. I'm thinking Jango/Boba Fett-style armor and gear. Those two took out a lot of Jedi with that getup.

However, if you hold the battle in an arena formed at the nexus of two fictional universes, with each having only what he can carry from his own world, then I still just don't see Batman winning. Barring a can of force-repellant and an unblockable sword-blocker, of course. :)

Yoda made some relatively detailed prophecies. Pre-Vader Anakin foresaw the death of his wife. Luke saw Vader torturing his friends while still training at Dagobah.

In other words, the Force does appear to grant form of clairvoyance, to view both the present and the future.

Hey all. I have some time to critique this coming week but so much back log that I don't think I will be trying to do all of them since I'm not sure who is still active and still looking for critiques for older stuff. So, let me know if there is one you still waiting for more feedback on if you have an updated version of a submit you want some fresh eyes on. Otherwise I'll just pick out a few to do and let the pieces fall where they may.... :P

I also will be doing this. FYI, I only got two critiques on "To Wish Upon a Dragon", so I'm definitely interested in more if you have the time. :)

The same thing as regular lightning: static electrictricity generated by particulate collisions builds up until the charge difference between the cloud and the earth becomes great enough to cause a discharge across thousands of feet of atmosphere.

I could buy that. Ok, two more words: light saber. If you presume Batman's ninja training is equal to Jedi training (something that's impossible to guage), an unblockable sword is a pretty awesome upper hand.

It's possible Vader's extensive prosthetics have slowed him down. That's hard to gauge, since the choreography in the old movies was quite slow. Vader only really fought the aged Ben Kenobi and the amateur Luke Skywalker, so it's hard to say how much he may have slowed down based on his opponents.

Edit: also, if we're going adam west style batman, no contest. Bat-force repellent, anyone?

YES. With a label on the can, of course. :P

I don't understand the appeal of ludicrous speed in Internet connections. Here at work I can pull around 24 mbps peak, but most servers can't keep up with that. I don't notice much difference here from home, where my cable modem peaks at around 6 (most of the time it's more like 2 or 3, but I've been known to get as high as 8 out of it).

The only time it really rocks is downloading GB-sized files from servers that can keep up and being done in 10 minutes. But I don't do that very often...

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Nightblood and Metalminds
« on: April 17, 2010, 07:27:39 AM »
In allomancy, the metal is just a catalyst. It helps an allomancer open a channel through the part of preservation that resides in them and draw on Preservation's power. I think I read that in an annotation.

I recall from the chapter headings that allomancy comes from Preservation, hemalurgy comes from Ruin, and Feruchemy is of the balance. That's not explained any more than that, but I can speculate. Allomancy uses metal as a catalyst to draw on Preservation. Hemalurgy stores an aspect of a victim's body in a piece of metal and transfers it to another. Feruchemy allows one to store aspects of one's own body in metal, to be drawn out later.

Nightblood is similar in this respect to both hemalurgy and feruchemy. A bit of one person's soul (the Breath) was transfered willingly from one person to another; that person amassed quite a lot of Breath and stored 1000 of them in Nightblood. This mass of life force has managed to imbue the inanimate metal with the characteristics of human sentience, which itself probably (my guess) has something to do with the shards of Adonalsium, which, again, has something to do with the fact that metal inside a person can't be pushed or pulled.

(Honestly, I think metal inside a person can't be pushed or pulled because, were that not the case, Allomancers and Hemalurgists would have an excessively debilitating weakness. Clearly that requirement led to lots of in-world rationalizations.)

But I'm just rambling to take a break from studying. Sorry you had to read that bag of wind.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Suvudu Cage Match Finals, Rand vs Jaime

I'm with Shiver. It makes sense when you look at the history of the books.

Believe it or not, the WoT was originally pitched as a trilogy. However, as is so often the case with pitching trilogies, the strategy was to sell TEotW first as a novel that could stand alone, then to see if TOR could be convinced to pick up the rest of the series.

Clearly the series would have been tremendously different as a trilogy. I can't quite wrap my mind around the idea, personally. That said, TEotW has a reasonably satisfying ending and stands on its own better than any of the others, including New Spring.

See, New Spring ends at a beginning—the beginning of the series. (Well, a fair number of years before it, but we can infer rather well what transpires in that time.) You won't find it satisfying at all if you think you might want to stop at one.

And if all that didn't convince you, here's another fact about TEotW: it's fairly slow. There's a section in the middle that drags on. (You could apply that assessment to the series in general, too, but I digress.) If you make it to the end of The Eye of the World, you can be fairly certain you'll enjoy the entire series, because the end is great and very much worth slogging through the doldrums to reach.

Having never read anything by GRRM (I'm waiting for him to finish the series so I don't get caught waiting like everyone else), I couldn't really get into this. I also don't usually go in for these sort of "Whose bettar SAMUS or MASTER CHEIF LOL" arguments. But I've gotta admit, Brandon's final writeup was pretty funny.

Brandon has said he wants to do one eventually. The key word is "eventually". Possibly within the next five years, but then again, maybe not. That man has a ton on his plate.
