Writing Group / Re: I hear voices...and I need answers. Soonish!
« on: August 28, 2008, 04:44:54 PM »
My opinion on this is simple.  Everyone has a voice for their writing, just like everyone has a voice for talking.  The trick is to figure out how to use your voice in service to your story.  It's not easy, but it's definitely doable.  Imagine someone with a smoker's voice, perhaps a ratty emaciated blonde woman who's been smoking for so many years she sounds like a fork being dragged though gravel when she talks.  While she could tell the story of a happy princess who finds the perfect husband after some minor travail, she would not tell that story using the same words, phrasing, gestures, tones, etc... as say...Pavarotti.  She could tell any story she wanted to, but, to be most effective, she would not use the same techniques as others. She would play to her strengths and be aware of and manipulate the effect her voice has.

Rather than 'finding their voices' writers need to figure out 'how to use their voices' to best effect.  And make no mistake; the same story told by the same person before and after they learn to use their voice effectively will sound very different.

Rants and Stuff / Re: Do Mormons tick you off?

Indeed.  But we've managed to avoid 'going at it' by mutual consent for quite some time now, so Comatose cannot be blamed.  Pat yourself on the back old chap and I shall do the same.

Oh no, MsFish.  If you paid for it, it's yours.  Is there some question about who owns the plastic shark I just bought? Does it somehow still belong to the rickets victim who assembled it in far off Taiwan?  In what way would a paper that I paid a legless Indian street urchin to write not be "my own?"

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Why isn't Mistborn 2 for sale on the Kindle?

Yeah! What he said.

I tell you Mr. Utopiagreen, you make a lot of sense.  Are you running for office anywhere?  'cause I'd like to vote for you.

Darn straight dude.  All Mormons are jerks.  It's like a requirement for when they get baptized.  "Are you a jerk?  Yes?  Well, here you go...(splash)."

The other thing is that Mormons are required, as part of their newfangled 'religion,' to go to internet forums and mock people.  Mercilessly.

Actually, I have it on good authority that the admins are together in the Bahamas wearing nothing but flip-flops and a light coat of oil.  I wouldn't look for the main site to be back up anytime soon... :P

Duh utopiagreen, Robison Wells is the reincarnated avatar of H.G. Wells.  He posts here under the pseudonym HouseofMustard.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Have you guys read Mr. Sanderson's books?
« on: August 21, 2008, 04:07:32 AM »
Yes! Warbreaker is awesome.  But be careful.  Because of piracy there are many bad copies of it out there.   If you get one that doesn't talk about the white buffalo you've got a decoy copy and should be careful because the publishers put a self-hypnosis algorithm in it that will cause you to do bad things and maybe get thrown in jail.  Because then you can't pirate anymore books if you're in jail.

Absolutely.  There is such a program and it has produced 20-25% of the New York Times bestseller list for the last several years.  I think they just made it available as a free download but I can't remember the exact name of the program.  If you find it, could you post about it here?  Because I totally want to use it.

Writing Group / Re: Novel idea needs some guidance

The  'most people have one of the elemental powers' / 'some people have all' with nothing in between, sounds a lot like Mistborn.  I think it would be interesting to play around with different combinations.  Some could have all, some could have two, some three, and which two or three or whatever manifest together really makes a difference in how you use them.

If they were talking about splitting a 120,000 word book into two parts then you'd have something to gripe about, but a 600K work?  Please, that's perfectly reasonable.

If Jordan were alive and turned in a 600K book, they'd split it into two for practical reasons.  Why should it be any different now that he's dead?

On another note, I don't think Brandon is going to hand in a 600K work.  I don't have any special knowledge, I just doubt it's going to be that long.  He and Jordan both have tighter writing styles than that.  Most of this 600K speculation comes from differing off the cuff estimates of how much he's got done now.  It's never a good idea to make plans based on WAGs.

It is alll about the money the story will be able to generate. Sadly in this world it usually does come down to money.

I'm honestly mystified by this attitude.  Publishers shouldn't make money?  They should maybe publish books for free out of the goodness of their hearts?  Give me a break.

Movies and TV / Re: Sword of Truth trailer
« on: July 30, 2008, 11:26:47 PM »
Wow, I know that this is only TV and all, but man...that looked really awful.

It's pretty indicative of the acting when they couldn't find any better examples to put in the trailer.  And, for all of you that haven't read the books, Richard is a large man.  Tapping an anorexic emo to play him seems like a bad idea.

Gah.
