Reading Excuses / Re: A poll concerning previous submissions

I don't use a Mac, but I can't imagine it would be particularly difficult to find an FTP client that runs on Macs. The use of FTP is too wide-spread.

For the record, FTP is actually older than MyFace or YourFace.

...oh, wait...

I think this is probably clear already, but in case it's not I should mention that we're not thinking of changing the submission process itself. This would be an additional feature: Those who are interested/willing put their work in the FTP archive, and those who want to access submissions from back before they joined can do so without everybody having to play email tag.

Well if that's not the perfect end to an 18-hour day I don't know what is. I go to bed and the bloody CEILING falls on me. No, really.

Yes, I do mean that literally.

...okay, fine. It was only one ceiling tile ("only") and it didn't land directly on me--it brushed me on the way down. It did, however, hit the nightstand next to me and knock over my water glass and half the stuff I had on there. (Thankfully not the one thing which would have really been breakable.)

It also flooded dirty water all over my bed and my floors (which I had to clean, since they're lamanate, and leaving huge puddles of water on them would ruin them). And got water all over the papers that I was keeping on the bottom shelf of said nightstand.

You can't make stuff like this up.

I am NOT IMPRESSED.

Edit: For those who require pictoral proof of the Assault of the Ceiling Tile: http://melody.byethost8.com/?p=313

^Assuming that Bejay's remark was in response to guessingo's question about Stackpole.

Ryos: Wow, thanks for that recommendation. Excellence indeed.

Books / Re: longest book

We read it for book club (at church) a couple of years ago.  A few of us got the full version and some got the abridged version.  It made for some confusing discussion.  One girl showed up with the Cliffs Notes, and when I looked at it I realized that it was the Cliffs Notes of the abridged version.

Hah! That sounds like a fun time.

Yeah, I need to read it too. It's on the list.

what are your problems? I think elistist gave it a bad review. I really liked his book Flash Forward.

I missed this before, sorry. And apparently I announced that I'd finished Wake twice. ::) What can I say--the last couple of weeks have been a bit hectic.

What Steve said more or less sums it up--a book with really cool ideas that didn't quite hold up to its potential. Caitlinn is a little too smart (it didn't bug me the way it bugs the EBR guys, but I did notice it), and I had a hard time getting past the first chapter. It essentially introduces Caitlinn as a boring teenage girl doing boring teenage girl things, and for me it was a complete turn-off. I got over it eventually, but yeah. That first chapter just did not do it for me.

I enjoyed the rest of the book rather more, but there were a couple of things... Caitlinn learns something about her father later on in the book, and I just don't buy that this was a surprise to her, especially since she's supposed to be such a smart kid.

There are a couple of side plots that could totally be way cool... in book two. In book one, they're really cool-looking ideas that don't accomplish anything other than setup.

That's my opinion of Wake in a nutshell.

guessingo: I haven't read Stackpole, so I can't offer an opinion there.

Thanks, Kaz--I'll definitely check it out. (I need to read some Zelanzy anyway.)

Sigyn: I'm always happy to read more "kind of like place XYZ" books, though they seem to be easier to find, and the mythology focus is for a specific project. =)

Ryos: I just popped Moon Viewing at Shijo Bridge onto my mp3 player. I'll try to give it a listen tomorrow when I go for my workout.

one of the guys nominated for a Campbell Award is writing an Islamic fantasy novel. No idea when it will be released. I

I heard about that! Can't remember the fellow's name, or I'd try looking into some of his short fiction. (Um, I think his last name was Ahmed?)

Nessa: Thanks, I'll check it out.

Books / Oddly Specific Reading Request
« on: September 15, 2010, 03:56:19 AM »
So I'm trying to come up with a decent list of fantasy stories that include non-Western mythologies, or stuff inspired by non-Western mythologies, and am having a tough time thinking of more than a couple. Anybody got any suggestions to throw out there for me?  (I know, this is specific enough that I might only get blank stares, but I figured it was worth a shot.)

They don't have to be novels. Short fiction counts.

Thanks!

Just finished Cumberland by Michael V. Smith (one of the professors at my university). It was often uncomfortable, but ultimately quite satisfying. It's not speculative fiction, though.

Also, I finished Sawyer's www:Wake recently, which was all right.
