Video Games / Fun and Cool References in WoW
« on: December 22, 2004, 03:16:48 AM »
So I'm in Darkshore with my 16th level NE Warrior and having a blast.   And tonight, a little touch put in by the guys at Blizz made it all the better.

You get a quest from Onu that has you investigate The Master's Glaive... a deep depression with a moat and a big skull with a gigantic sword stuck through it.  There's a ton of bad guys around.

Once you defeat them you approach their altar where you're supposed to find something that can give info about their plans.  There are two books.

One book gives you the info needed.

If you open the other book, an arm pops out and swats you quite aways back.  Errr....wrong book.

Very nice, subtle, Army of Darkness reference.

Have any of you come across anything similar?

Everything Else / Ask Dr. P!
« on: December 21, 2004, 10:03:24 PM »
So I'm bored.  I have more freetime than I know what to do with right now.  I'll be on for some time while playing guitar and watching Sealab 2021.

So ask me a question.  Any question.  I'll answer.  The absurdity of the answer will depend solely on whether or not Sealab is on or b/t episodes.

Video Games / TWG WoW.  Time to Decide
« on: December 09, 2004, 11:43:47 PM »
Okay.  Time to pull away from the old behemoth thread.

We should decide which server we're playing on as TWG and what side.    I don't have that much time to devote to the game and I would like to devote a good chunk playing with TWG folk.

So Hyjal or CC?

Alliance or Horde.

My vote is CC Alliance, but that's b/c I like my Dwarven Paladin.

Video Games / WoW Tech Question
« on: December 08, 2004, 07:00:15 PM »
Okay, some I think I'm going to trade in some XBOX games and get either WoW or Pirates! as a reward for myself for doing so well studying for boards.

Here's the question... I hesitate to get WoW b/c of my RAM.  I have 256.  I know it meets min reqs, but I don't trust that so much anymore.  I'd hate to get it and have it run really poorly.   I meet or exceed all the other min reqs and even many of the recommended.

What do you all think?  I wish there were a video stress test lke FF XI had so I could see how it ran before I committed to it.

Everything Else / Second Round
« on: December 07, 2004, 01:02:21 AM »
When I wake up tommorow I'll be on my way to taking Part 2 of my Boards.  I'll be done at High Noon on Wednesday.

I've spent the last month trying my best to study for what is supposed to be quite a bit easier than the first round.  I feel like I did a lot but also like it wasn't enough.  I guess I'll know soon.

Tonight also happens to be a year to the day since I met Kim.  The celebration is on hold pending Boards.

Wish me luck.  I'm going to need it.

Everything Else / I need you help!
« on: November 29, 2004, 11:22:10 PM »
You might have missed this if you don't check "Site News," but I'll be unable to write The Nerdery #4 because I have Boards next week.

I need a guest writer so I'm opening the forum to ideas if any of you want a shot at it.

Site News / The Nerdery #4:  Call For Help
« on: November 28, 2004, 04:23:09 PM »
Well, the week of the 6th I have to take Boards so the week leading up to it will be full of studying, I'm afraid.  As such, I don't think I'll have time to write that week so I'd like to make a call for a guest writer.  Just post here with your topic in mind and I'll choose based upon my mood.   I'll write you an intro too.

The Nerdery #3 should be submitted by tonight.

Role-Playing Games / Sharn: City of Towers
« on: November 16, 2004, 12:05:36 PM »
For those curious about the new Eberron book, it's great.  One of the best city books I've picked up. Even if this weren't Eberron it would be really, really good.  I'm suitably impressed.  And the CD that comes with it is actually good.

Expect a review once I digest it.

And I'll probably update the Eberron Adventure Roundup with the new one from Dungeon soon.

Table-Top Games / War of the Ring
« on: November 05, 2004, 01:01:09 AM »
Holy Crap.

I just picked up War for the Ring because I saw the full game on display in all of its glory at the gaming store.  I'm so weak willed...

This thing is a monster.

I'll give more info once I actually read the rules

Everything Else / ENGAGE!
« on: October 31, 2004, 07:55:04 PM »
So I'm back in the country, in my new place, back on DSL (after four years of dial up) and...

I'm Engaged!

Yup, I proposed to my then-girlfriend at the end of the annual slideshow at my final Eyeball (the optometry school's big formal dinner/dance).  I added two slides to it.  One read " And now a very special announcement for one audience member" and the next said "Kim, will you marry me?"

Amidst the gasps of the audience (about 400 folks) she turned to find me on one knee with the ring.  She teared up and said a few words of disbelief but said yes. The whole crowd was cheering for us and came up around us clapping and forming a wall of people.  Folks were standing on chairs to get a look.  People coming up later said it was like a scene in a movie.  I was just relieved because it went off without a hitch.  Kim was ecstatic.

So the wedding is October 15th of next year, yeah!

And yes, this is the girl I met on eHarmony a year ago.  Another member of my class saw how happy we were after a few months of dating and signed up for it too. He's going to propose in a few weeks.  So, sceptical as I was about whatever system eHarmony uses, there seems to be something to it (based off a sample size of 8 or so...I won't bore you with all the other stories).

So, YEAH!

Role-Playing Games / Campaign Brainstorm: The Sequel
« on: October 16, 2004, 08:46:17 AM »
So post here what you'd like to run, are running, or ideas you have thought about running.  I like to hear others ideas.  Here's a whole slew of what I've been thinking about.

D&D Eberron: You've all heard this, I'm basically running the published modules (except Whispers...uh!) and then branching out on my own.

D&D Adventures: Basically a low time commitment D&D game, probably my back up if Eberron falls through. The PCs will acquire a keep early on which will serve two purposes: a home-base for the campaign and a money-sink which they can upgrade (a good reason to adventure). The campaign would have no meta-plot other than that. It would just be running modules or homebrew adventures...kind of like Jeff did with Hackmaster. Anyone could jump in or out at any time without worry. Plus, it could be run Troupe style so someone didn't have to DM the whole time. Pretty much the way D&D was played back in the day, but with 3.5E.

Savage Worlds Necessary Evil: Mmmmmmm... supervillains. The plot for the game rocks on toast. Would certainly be fun to play.

Savage Worlds Tour of Darkness: Thinking of running this to pull some of my non-gaming friends into the hobby. Their love of historical strategy wargames could make this a viable option. Actually, Weird Wars 2 would be better, but it's not out yet of course.

Angel - The Dark: People seemed to like my Buffy campaign. I know it was just about the most fun I've have running a game. Everyone really got into their characters and tried to emulate the show in all the good ways. My departure to Kansas City cut it short, but at least it actually ended (unlike so many other of my campaigns). The game was set in 1999, and ended just before the new year began. While I love the Buffy RPG, the Angel RPG is better for running any game not set in high-school/college/etc and as an added bonus if just about completely interchangeable with the Buffy RPG.

The Dark would revisit my Buffyverse version of St. Louis in present day. There's a lot of mystery and weirdness still left to uncover next to the bloody 'ol Muddy. This time, the cast are adults and the themes are more mature - leaving the fun-turned-deadly high school hijinks behind as Angel the Series did. The cast will be all new with the option of reprising their roles from the original series. Of course we have to figure out how they escaped from being stranded in the demon dimension the Lemps called home, but that's what flashbacks are for :)

Savage Worlds - Deadlands: Yup, Deadlands still rules in my book. I'm not entirely happy with the stop-gap free Deadlands to SW conversion rules currently available, but they're better than nothing. I would still love to run a Deadlands game. I may do it as a one-shot sometime or other. I think I'll wait for the full book to come out before comitting to a full campaign. C'mon Shane, write faster!

Buffy - The Gateway Season 2: I could run Buffy again, starting where the last game left off (on a very un-Josslike cliffhanger), but I'd rather run Angel.

Savage Worlds - Necronauts: Inspired by the premise of Orpheus and Flatliners, this would be a pulp era game about exploring the world beyond death and then blowing it to smithereens. Not too much developed here yet, just the basic idea.

Savage Worlds - Ruins Redux: Ruins didn't go anywhere near how I thought it would and I'm not that happy at all with how it turned out. The players did a great job, but I fell through as a gamemaster. Given the chance, I'd like to run a game starting with the same premise, but do it right this time. It would be run concurrently with Ruins history, but be set in a different part of the world. This is more of a pipe dream, there's a lot of stuff I'd rather run before this.

TWG has been scooped.

Front page of EnWorld (the biggest d20 site out there) has a link to here and to my Eberron Adventure Roundup under their reviews section.

So that's pretty cool.

Everything Else / Vegemite!
« on: October 14, 2004, 08:02:03 AM »
Well, as it was nearly my last day here in Australia, the office forced me to eat a Vegemite sandwhich while they all watched and laughed.

For those who haven't experienced this Australian 'delicacy' and have only heard of it though the Men at Work hit "Land Down Under," it's a biproduct of beer production high in yeast, salt, and vitamin B.  It's pretty healthy, except for high salt content, and seems to be a staple for kids down here.

Also, it looks like compacted sewage and smells like an old sock dipped in a stagnant toad-breeding pool.

All that considered, it didn't taste bad.  In fact, it was kind of tasty.  Apparently, the trick is to spread it very thin.

So there's one more experience under the 'ol belt.

Table-Top Games / 40K 4th Ed.
« on: October 14, 2004, 07:42:42 AM »
After debating for a while I picked it up.  Figured it would make decent reading for the flight back to the States.

All I can say is WOW!

Not only are the rules more polished, but they've finally got rules for small skirmishes that don't totally suck.

Plus the rulebook is absolutely gorgeous.

Entropy, I assume you've already played with the new rules.  If so, how did it go?

Table-Top Games / Battle For MacCragge
« on: October 11, 2004, 02:22:36 AM »
Yeah, I spelled it wrong.

But the boxed set looks pretty awesome.  If I had someone to trade away the minis I didn't want I might even pick it up and dip my toe into GW once again.  Maybe.

I should probably just stick to Warmachine.

Sigh, too many games, too little time and money.
