Title: Cool Stuff Found on the Internet, again
Post by: fuzzyoctopus on February 01, 2006, 01:29:34 AM
Hey I get to start the thread, with the Forbes Fictional Fifteen!

http://www.forbes.com/2002/09/13/400fictional.html

I didn' t know Forbes had a list of the richest fictional characters, until my husband started researching the biography of Scrooge McDuck. (Don't ask.)

The Lego Suicides.  Safe for work, but potentially triggering to anyone who may have dealt with suicide personally. I seriously doubt anyone will be offended by this, but you know, just in case....

This might technically belong in webcomics, but it has wide appeal and I wanted to make sure everyone saw it.

On the Dinosaur Comics message boards, people started taking Garfield comics and removing all of Garfield's dialogue. The change is amazing--what used to be a junk comic about a smart-aleck cat is suddenly a hilarious, minimalist comic about a pathetic man. I can't stop laughing at these:

I haven't read thru all that legal stuff on that page. BUT, from my understanding, you can't copyright ideas per se, but the expression of those ideas. So you can copyright the a novel but you can't really copyright the plot-line. Now, TM is a whole different subject, and I don't wanna get into that. Still, the essense of copyright protection is what you produce from an idea, not the idea itself.

Guys--help me out?

we shan't again.

I meant not to have that discussion again BUT to help me find that thread. I don't remember what it was called. I'll try searching just "Copyright" or something, though... Sheesh.  :P

Edit: I should've been more specific, though. Oops.

I'd just like to point out that Fell's last post about the minimalist Garfield comic is awesome, and is much more deserving of idle prattle than some legal crap.
Title: Re: Cool Stuff Found on the Internet, again
Post by: Shrain on February 06, 2006, 07:23:04 PM
Indubitably. I just hadn't gotten around to pulling up that link. Besides, Bot quoted me, so I was just sort of responding to that.

Aaanyway, I the "minimalist" Garfield strips did make me laugh and, normally, I don't care all that much for Garfield.  (Crap, I forsee more sticks and stones headed my way... or maybe some angry ninja monkeys *sigh*)

I doubt there will be any sticks tossed over disliking Garfield.

Post by: Shrain on February 06, 2006, 07:55:58 PM
Phew!

P.S. Do you remember the name of the thread where we talked about all that copyright stuff? I remember it was last year but I can't pull it up with any searches... Eh, on second thought, nevermind. It's not worth it. Let Bot be confused.

If you don't see the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button, then you must not be on the main page for Google. If you just search in the Google toolbar, then it will actually give you normal results. You have to go to Google.com, put in the phrase, and click on the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button, which is right next to the "Google Search" button.

Note that the page that comes up is not *on* Google.

also, it matters little that Napolean was Corsican. He led a French Army and was the leader of the government of France. That makes his victories the victories of France.

Rats! The mediaplayer video keeps stopping after only 15 seconds. Dang it, I wanted to watch the whole thing. I can't figure out why it's messing up either. Oh, well, at least I got to see the first bit--enough to make me intrigued and amused at the same time. (The noise it makes is quite the drawback...)

They are cute, but only Mormons would think to send them to missionaries themselves.

FirstMateJack, those aren't really action figure so I think you are still free to make the Elder aciton figures. Also, I doubt Fisherprice would be able to sue you for making mission characters becayse their idea is probably to generic to be copyrighted. However, the market might be saturated by the time you get your action-figures out.

I post this more for its interesting premise than the video itself. Maverick is apparently a business consulting firm, and their new advertising campaign is a web video of three women (the Maverettes) singing "Our House Up the River from Wall Street," a spoof song about corporate criminal behavior. The intention, I assume, is for everyone to pass the video around (just like I'm doing here!) so that it permeates web culture and eventually a CEO will see it and hire them. Not a new tactic by any means, but a pretty transparent attempt at it.

The song itself is vaguely amusing, but it's never as funny as it sounds like it should be.

I want to post it on my livejournal. I have to mail it to my freaking self, wait 5 minutes for the email to get there and then copy the link out.  This is the internet, and i shouldn't have to wait 5 minutes for ANYTHING.  The doubleclicking hasn't been working for me.

Hey I found this messing around on Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sith

it's the complete fictional history of the Sith (in Star Wars)

Wikipedia also has the history behind every Jedi or Sith Lord ever mentioned in comics, video games, etc.  They did this just for fun, but it's still pretty neat because I'm such a big Star Wars fan.

Oh, and apparently there is Wookipedia, Star Warspedia, Sith Lord pedia, and Star Trek pedia too!  ha ha

Get BYU's Daily Universe on your computer for free:

http://universe.newsstand.com/

I know a lot of people make fun of the "Unifarce," but I still like to read it and keep up to date with what's going on at BYU. Plus it lets me know what activities are going on. For example, I was able to find out that the MOA was having a kids day with face painting, balloons, activities, etc. for free and it just happened to coincide with my niece's birthday (who was turning 6). Would have never known other wise and it was a perfect birthday activity.

Plus it's fun to read what people argue about in the letters section. Like right now they're arguing about whether the government has the right to make helmet and seat belt laws. Riveting stuff.

And if nothing else, there is the comics and the crossword puzzle.

No doubt.  I had a couple of letters to the editor published while I was a student at the Y.  On both occasions what they printed had been fundamentally changed from what I had written, and it became apparent as I spent hours trying to get it corrected that the person proofing the letters had simply not understood what I was saying and so changed it to something they could understand, which is to say, something stupid.  I eventually had to go to the head editor on both occasions and the staff I had to go through on the way to him simply didn't understand what my objection was.
Title: Re: Cool Stuff Found on the Internet, again
Post by: Skar on July 06, 2006, 07:36:56 PM
I worked for a while with a Journalism major at the Y.  He asked me once if I'd ever considered going into the FBI.  I said I had and he asked me why.  He said he wanted to know for an article he was writing for the Universe on why the FBI has so many mormons in it and recruits so heavily at the Y.

When I was done explaining my reasons for considering it he said he wasn't going to use my answers because they didn't "fit his concept"  I dug a little further and discovered that, according to him, the reason you write a news piece is to prove a point and so, to that end, you simply don't include contradictory facts or information.  He was serious and thought I was a little "slow" for thinking otherwise.

I have had a very low opinion of Journalism at the Y ever since.
Title: Re: Cool Stuff Found on the Internet, again
Post by: FirstMateJack on July 06, 2006, 07:42:53 PM
That isn't just the Y.

When my mother was mayor of our city she was confronted by several different media sources who would ask her what she wanted the research to say.

They explained it that they can get the polls and the stories to say anything she would like it to and it will tend to sway the people who do not know any better. Kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy thing.

I think most people are discovering this in the media and news and starting to reject the polls when they hear them.

I have no love for the big media. Too biased.

Underneath the UI, the Pacman on Atari and Arcade are all of the same source (code).

Besides, Atari was cool in its day! It had it's time, that time has passed. Now for the apes. Maybe they will play on the Wii and PS3 in a few years! I say Project X or whatever, they can fly apparantly.

http://www.engadget.com/2006/08/01/transparent-nxt-soundvu-equipped-screen/

Quote

Japan's Dai Nippon Printing Co. (DNP) is set to make the country even more futuristic this fall when they release their transparent "Crystal Illusion Screen" equipped with NXT's where's-that-sound-coming-from SoundVu technology. The screen itself measures a respectable 46 inches in old-school 4:3 and is coated with a special liquid crystal material that apparently only reflects the light from the projector, making it usable even in brightly lit areas. NXT's SoundVu system takes the display's flexibility even further, eliminating the need for external speakers, instead magically producing sound from the screen itself. It's not clear, however, if the projector is actually part of the system or if you have to supply your own. We hope it's the former, cause the screen's gonna cost you a hefty 480,000 Yen (over $4,000) when it launches in October.

Just read all of Part I and really got pulled into it.

I think one of the passages I like the best is this one because it made me think about the motives and what we really know about them:

"They were a powerful force in Iraq, but they were like shadows behind a curtain. We could see broad outlines, but were left to guess at who they really were, how they think, and what motivates them."

If the resolution is approved, the 12 planets in our solar system listed in order of their proximity to the sun would be Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Ceres, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, Charon, and the provisionally named 2003 UB313. Its discoverer, Michael Brown of the California Institute of Technology, nicknamed it Xena after the warrior princess of TV fame, but it likely would be rechristened something else later, the panel said.

I think we should most definitely have a planet named Xena.

Well, it's the Secret Word extension. Each day there's a new secret word, and every time you find it on a website you'll get a fun little surprise. You can also check your options to see what todays secret word is as well.

Yes, this is from Pee Wee's Playhouse.

Their primary sense isn't sight. In fact, it's something that Earthlings haven't developed yet. The lag is from their server trying to translate it into something we can see or hear, and failing miserably.

www.freeconferencecall.com

This is a free service that gives you a number you can use for conference calls. You have to pay normal long distance charges (but so many people have free long distance, that is negligible).  And I know most of you don't have a business where you'd need to have a conference call, per se, but I was thinking how nice it would be if you just wanted to have a call with multiple members of your family so you could all catch up at once. And people can come on to the call or leave the call whenever they want without causing a disruption with other people on the call. I just think it's cool!

And I've personally used the service and I thought it worked as should (i.e. no connection errors or not being able to hear people).

Love the blue Screen of Death? Well now you can get your very own screen saver from Microsoft
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Miscellaneous/BlueScreen.mspx

Quote
One of the most feared colors in the NT world is blue. The infamous Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) will pop up on an NT system whenever something has gone terribly wrong. Bluescreen is a screen saver that not only authentically mimics a BSOD, but will simulate startup screens seen during a system boot.

But don't expect to be able to download it if you use McAfee.

Quote
McAfee, for one, is actively preventing users from downloading the software. The company's security research team told ZDNet UK this week: "This is not a false positive. We are intentionally detecting this as Joke.Bluescreen.c, as it's meant to scare people."

The end of the year and the end of a thread (I reckon we'll be starting a new one in a couple days, since we're at almost 25 pages now) is a good time to review and take stock. So here's some best/worst lists for you. Technically, only one is actually about this year. But I reckoned, what the heck. I chose these based on humor. and all but the first one more because of the writing skill than the actual lists.

CNet's Worst Tech of 2006 (so far). (http://www.cnet.com/4520-11524_1-6478472-1.html)
sample: Worst Product that can get you Arrested *and* ruin your PC: Kazaa 3. "Is the RIAA in on this? It should be, because this P2P app is the best argument against illegal downloading we've ever seen."

Radar's Most Dangerous Toys of all time (http://www.radarmagazine.com/features/2006/12/toys.php)
Should I be bothered that I've owned at least three of these? And have recently let my kids play with one of them?

Arthur's Hall of Viking Manliness presents the 10 Most Manly Video Games Ever (http://www.arthurshall.com/x_2006_manly_video_games.shtml)
Warning, there's some language in this one that will put several of you off. Plus one of the games is literally the most tasteless and misogynist games *ever* (#3, Custer's revenge -- also featuring what I think might be a screenshot of some early 2 bit porn, so you might want to skip #3 altogether). From the bit about Streetfighter: "Although I was not sure if anyone who called himself a "Yoga Master" could be truly manly, Dalsim's ability to dislocate nearly all of his joints and club you with his arms and legs has caused me to rethink my initial position on this issue."

actually, in all seriousness, they do leap. Usually when they're frightened. It's quite comical. I've got a picture book full of photos of them. I now wonder why anyone would want to look at a picture of an armadillo if it wasn't a foot off the ground, legs sprawled out, tail dangling. Of course this also always makes me imagine them leaping when a car is "charging" them, then they get slapped into the front grill, and either stick there like something out of Looney Tunes or else are flung to bounce off something else as they roll into a ball.

I may need some help.

Two awesome stories from Yahoo news today.

Why I don't paraglide. (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070202/od_nm/australia_eagles_dc)

What not to do if you're a Wookie impersonator. (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070203/ap_on_fe_st/chewbacca_arrest;_ylt=ArfZju3_MqEhEceqOqvaqcMZ.3QA;_ylu=X3oDMTA3NW1oMDRpBHNlYwM3NTc-)

Some favorite quotes from the second one:

From a police lt.--"The lesson here is you can have the force with you," Vernon said. "You just can't use illegal force."

What the impersonater said: 'Nobody tells this wookie what to do."

I was looking at past Google April Fool's jokes, and I found the FAQ for Google Gulp (http://www.google.com/googlegulp/faq.html) funny (mostly because they know how to laugh at themselves; many of the questions seem to be referencing Gmail). I especially like the last question/answer:

11. When will you take Google Gulp out of beta?

Man, if you pressure us, you just drive us away. We'll commit when we're ready, okay? Besides, what's so great about taking things out of beta? It ruins all the romance, the challenge, the possibilities, the right to explore. Carpe diem, ya know? Maybe we're jaded, but we've seen all these other companies leap headlong into 1.0, thinking their product is exactly what they've been dreaming of all their lives, that everything is perfect and hunky-dory – and the next thing you know some vanilla copycat release from Redmond is kicking their butt, the Board is holding emergency meetings and the CEO is on CNBC blathering sweatily about "a new direction" and "getting back to basics." No thanks, man. We like our freedom.

If you want to see what a real Tasmanian Devil looks like, check out this link.....

I was in the States last year and everyone kept asking me if they were just like loony tunes made them out to be.  Yes they are nasty little buggers and I've had to share a tent with one before (you guys have bears after your food, we have the Tassie devil helping himself to ours). They have the strongest jaw for their size and only feed on carion, still I wouldn't want to suprise one.  However, they don't spin around fast and demolish everything in their path.  Unfortunately most of our 'wild' population are contracting a deadly facial tumour and while research is currently being done to find out what, where and how of this disease, it's looking grim.  Pretty soon it'll only be ones in the parks that can be seen.

When I was a teenager, my friend Jon Clark (we called him Schroom for reasons completely inexplicable) bought a book at the skate shop in the mall (it was the only store in the mall that sold RPG and bookshelf games like Avalon Hill). It was called Killer and was released by Steve Jackson games.

Killer was proto-LARP (published, I believe, in 1985). The idea was that all the players were assassins. Last one standing wins. You used squirtguns, nerf darts, or anything else that you registered with the referee as a weapon (variant: assign cash values and give the assassins an allowance). The problem was you were only allowed to kill your assigned target, after which you inherited their assignment. If you killed someone else, or an innocent bystander, you died too. The other rule is you couldn't be witnessed -- with one exception. If you wore a mask you could kill *anyone* you wanted, but in turn anyone was allowed to target you.

We played a massive game in high school, many of us getting detention for doing things like running into AP History classes wearing a ski mask and using a squirt gun on a target, then running out. My crowning achievement was taking out Raymond Soper. We were year book "computer editors" together, which meant we spent most of fifth period in the other room playing Bard's Tale (ah, Bard's Tale, how I loved thee! -- but that's another story). I renamed the Bard's Tale executable, and wrote a BASIC program that made the screen flash and present the words "BOOM! This computer has just blown up. You are now dead." Begin fifth period, I call John (the other "computer editor") into the main room to "ask him something." Wait 120 seconds. Hear scream of frustration from the other room. Grin with unnatural glee.

All this is a long way of preparing you for how awesome this link is. The problem with Killer is our current political environment. "Killing" people in public can not only get you detention, depending on how paranoid the local citizenry are, you could wind up in jail. At the very least you freak the crap out of everyone.

Enter Cruel 2 B Kind (http://cruelgame.com/). The principles are the same as Killer, though there are some complexities and point systems that I find very interesting. The main difference is that you "kill" by an act of kindness, three official "weapons" being determined by the referee and given power in a rock-scissors-paper scheme, so you can mediate ties. Thus, at worst, the local people will live in fear of packs of gamer nerds performing random acts of kindness.

By the way, Dan, I really admire those shoes.

Oh, well, yes, I thought there was confusion in part to what the link was to, I'm sorry. Actually, the daft hands link noted there is a similar video to daft punk's original song, harder better faster stronger, and is all done in one shot with no editing (which in its own right is neat for what it is, but i personally like the one that's edited together, because it's much more fun to watch.)

And not sure why, but Firefox seems to not like links at all anymore. Have to use other browsers for some reason...

Found this on Wired.

Quote
NASA needs your help! They are looking to name the newest section of  the International Space Station, Node 3, which is scheduled to be delivered by the Space Shuttle Endeavor in late 2009.

Votes are being taken at www.nasa.gov/namenode3. NASA is asking that the new name follow in the tradition set by the names given to Node 1, called "Unity," and Node 2, the "Harmony" module. Voting will continue until March 20 and the winning name will be announced in April.

There are four names to choose from on the right side of the screen. The front runner, as of this posting, is my personal favorite, "Serenity."

I just voted and it was at 82%. The name fits perfectly with the names the other two nodes already have (though it's kind of redundant to Harmony).

Look...a few of those drivers are women. In a lot of the video there is no way to tell whether the driver is male or female. I am bad at parallel parking; does that make me a woman? Don't be a sexist pig.

You are quite right. The same holds true for that last clip. It could be a woman. A woman won the nascar race a few years ago. Just goes to show that you can't take these things too seriously.

[Apparently, the animation is from a show called "Bleach"], and the song sounds a like it's a short clip from the Finnish group Loituma's song "Levan Polkka".  Loituma makes some great music, and the entire song is pretty good (though listening to Finnish scat is kind of funny).

To contribute, here's a Youtube clip of them singing the song:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4om1rQKPijI&feature=related
They sound better when not live, obviously, but oh well.

Here's a Chipmunks version:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJnOI9g6Z7M&feature=related

Oh, and here's an entire Bleach/Levan Polkka video (with the complete song, and some sort of accompaniment, which isn't something I'd heard before):  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nb_hG5q0OxQ&feature=related

It's Orihime from Bleach.

But do you use like 12 nearly-identical knives?  I mean, I can imagine using the pliers and screwdrivers and nailclippers and such (though, as you say, that tool would be too unwieldy to be practical), but an awful lot of those tools look to me like they would serve the same function.

Sorry to double post, but I saw this the other day and couldn't resist posting it here. Sorry if you've seen it before as it is fairly old. I also feel obligated to give a language warning, since they swear a few times.

Axis of Awesome: 4 Chords (Live) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1fQ1P4Mwlc)

It's basically some random band who took as many songs as they could find that used the same 4 chords and stuck them all together. That being said, I'm pretty sure that there are a couple of songs that they put in that don't actually use these chords, they just fit them as well. Either way, it's entertaining, and it does have a good point. Much of the music we listen to today is the exact same thing with different lyrics.

There's only one word to describe that video.

NO!

That's what I blurted out when I clicked it again today. Well, in my mind. And then I closed the tab as quickly as I could. *shudders*

Also, I love the quilts.  My favorite is the original Zelda stuff.

It doesn't mean I've finished moving (which is in 2 weeks), it means I've quit World of Warcraft and have free time to read the forums again. I've been gone a while, I know. I'm semi-back.

I had been. THEN when WotLK came out the husband wanted to play, and well DANG I very well couldn't let him do it alone. So I went back, with a vengence, but have been 'clean' for 4 months now. Finally my hands don't itch for my keybindings anymore.

It says quilt.  That's amusing.

Also, what you should do is get a timer set up.  So you can play for a certain amount of time, and then your internet shuts off.  Then you can enjoy the expansion without having to worry about spending too much time.

That would work probably for about a week. Then I would turn it off or something. Nah, it's better that I not play at all.

Twenty minutes long and really interesting.  Radio guy has a bet going with a video editor that posits the whole thing was done in a single shot.  Pretty cool stuff indeed.

It's cool to know how they did it. It was certainly a stupid idea to bet against it being one shot (though technically it was two for the diamonds). Betting on whether the horse/diamonds were CGI or not would have been a smarter bet.

Ee: awesome trailer, okay game, terrible movie. ;D
