Title: WoK ARCs
Post by: Valkynphyre on August 15, 2010, 11:17:23 PM
Where's that forum for people who've read the ARC? 'cause I can't find a link anymore.

There's a board for discussing the arc over on stormblessed: http://www.stormblessed.com/forum/index.php you have to ask the admin steve to admit you to it, it's invisible till he's specifically give you access, tell him you've read the arc and you want to discuss it and he'll let you in.

I'm sad. Someone showed me their ARC, and I got to read a chapter or two from it, then he took it away. It feels now like I'm missing out on something...

That's terrible. I would NEVER* do that to anyone. It's too cruel!

*unless I thought it would be funny.

I'm relatively sure that being related to peter, and having brandon as one of your favorite authors would eventually lead to murder for this sort of reason.

Congrats all on winning one! Hopefully mine should arrive any day now.

Mine too! Hopefully. If they sent it media mail it could take up to a month to arrive! It could get delivered AFTER I buy one a copy in store!!

(yes i'm conflicted emotions about my post)

I asked the peps at Tor what service they used and they had no idea what shipping method they use.   >:(  :'(
I'm assuming that they would use at least usps to send them, which would mean no more than a week to most areas, but who knows.

Media mail = USPS. But if the whole reason behind an ARC is to get it and read it and post reviews BEFORE release date, media mail would be out of the question for their purposes. You're probably right about the week time period. Shipped on friday.. should be getting mine any day now. Where are the TOR offices located?

I'm sure Tor would ship them out using something that would arrive in a timely manner. What's the point of letting someone win an advance copy of a book, only to get it to them AFTER it's released?

K so how much do these arc's weigh? I've got 3 packages on their way and UPS is showing a package coming today that weighs 6.2 lbs.  Seems to heavy for 4 dvds or an iphone. So i'm assuming it must be the ARC.  Although I'm not positive. Anyone have an idea of the approximate weight?

Edit:
Amazon shows the shipping weight for the release version at 3lbs. So does the ARC weigh more?

I would think that ARC's would weigh less, since they're usually bare-bone versions of the book without things like dust-jacket, sometimes binding, and such. However, I can't speak for these specific ones, since I don't currently have mine.

Heh, back when I worked in the UPS financial department, i had access to the entire shipping system of the midwest, I could look up packages going to any specific destination that passed through any midwest facility.

I've been talking daily mailbox walks to check for a package from TOR publishers. Due to my low number of blog readers or watchers, even with the sent ARC inquiry, I highly doubt the "Way of Kings" Arc would come for that reason. Contest-wise: Anytime there's enthusiasm involved with the prize then there's always a low probability that I'll win the ARC. Therefore, I have to greatly abhor the item or be apathetic about it to receive that prize. Even with the proper methods of altering my thought processes, I still cannot disguise my excitement.

At least, I have my copy ordered from Amazon to look forward to. It's been six months since I originally preordered it.

The ARC weighs less than 3 pounds.

It's frustrating that these ARCs aren't arriving early. I mean, the book comes out in 11 days...you'd think the ARC would come early enough that you could finish it before the book's release.

Yes, yes it is. Yes, yes you would. I was hoping to finish it before release and put out a nice/horrible/indifferent (most likely nice) little review on Goodreads but the longer it takes to get here, the less chance of that happening. I thought that was the whole point of an ARC, to get it out so the average little people like myself can read and get an opinion out there that isn't a critic's POV.

Suppose it would help if I had a reference number or something huh. It's requiring it of me. We could compare info, if they are both 6.2 lbs, then it would definately be the ARC  :D

Which contest did you win Erangol?  Yeah, 5 business days which would have been today for delivery.  So i'm hoping it's not the 5 days that Erangol had...  It would help if there was some way to track them or something.  It's kinda depressing winning an ARC but having to wait forever to get it and maybe not in enough time to read it before the release. Kinda defeats the purpose in my opinion.

It was the one where you had to comment on a TOR blog post or something like that, it ended like 13th i think or somewhere along those lines. I dont much remember, it was almost like 2 weeks ago, and i entered more than one in hopes to win an ARC from various sites.

Laura at Tor says they were told by Macmillan's mailing house that the Goodreads ARCs were shipped on August 13th, but people keep asking, so they are looking into it further. She says you can contact her here: http://www.goodreads.com/user/show/2045333-tor-books-jen-laura

I had just contacted them, like an hour ago. Hopefully they can figure it out.  Thanks peter.

Here is the response they sent me:
" Tor Books (Jen & Laura) said,
I’m sorry that the U.S. Postal Service is moving so slowly. Delivery can take between 3-14 days though -usually- it does not take that long. Unfortunately, they must be really busy right now since it is taking so long. We have been notified that people have started receiving the ARCs as of yesterday. You should get yours any day now.

We're pretty bummed that they didn't get out the fans any earlier too, but unfortunately we don't control the mail. I know it would have been way more fun to get it well in advance of the release, but hey, you still have a really neat collectible that'll be apart of the history of The Stormlight Archive forever.

If you still haven't gotten yours by the end of day on Friday, let us know"

The ARC really doesn't capture the awesomeness of the final product.

It's heavy and it's gorgeous. All the artwork looks so much better, everyone's work is in there now (the ARC is missing some artwork, and I didn't realize just how much) and it's just a solid brick of a book. To be sure, the ARC is a collector item, but if you can't get one don't feel bad about it. You'll get the better product in less than a week.

You guys are in for a real treat!

We got 25 books today...but Sam Weller's oversold by...25 books. So Brandon needs to give them all to Sam Weller's...(Well, they will replace them with unsigned ones, but it's still funny.)
Title: Re: WoK ARCs
Post by: calvin on August 27, 2010, 05:53:23 PM
I got mine yesterday...yay!  Like Inkthinker said, it's not the highest quality of book, although it's clean and sharp looking, it's not as solid as a hardback.  But the whole idea of getting it early is way cool and it is a collector's item.  Proof that you got the early batch.  I found some of the cover markings interesting, such as "Uncorrected Advance Reading Copy - Not For Sale"  as well as the Marking Plans information on the back cover, as well as future ordering info that book stores will be able to use to get displays, etc.  Just another side of the industry that you never get to see up front.

I've always liked "backlot tours" almost as much as the actual production (what I wouldn't give to be on the set of Survivor without having to actually be on the show!)  To me, this is a small "backlot tour" into the book marketing industry.  And now I have my souvenir for the trip!

Currently devouring...will bring my copy to the book signing.  :)

Oh yeah, the art is great, having seen it first hand, and the UK edition at least is about twice the size of a regular paperback and just over a thousand pages long. It's technically a paperback, but it makes my hardcover of Warbreaker look thin and underfed. :D

The cover is very sturdy though, which is great- I dislike huge books with really flimsy paperback covers that are really easy to bend. I feel like I could throw the book around a bit without damaging it, not that I would. :)

Apparently the ARCs were as well. I'm not sure who did what, but it looks like several pieces by Isaac and all the work from the third artist were left out of the ARC and ABM copies.

So even for ARC owners, there's good incentive to seek out the retail final.

I'm not sure what to talk about before release. I kinda want the artwork to be a surprise for everyone else as well, and even talking about what's in there (and MAN, there's a lot!) might be a bit of a spoiler.

Plus, I only know for sure what I did, I'm not sure how it breaks down between Isaac and Greg Call. Peter would know for sure.

I got mine on Thursday and finished it yesterday.  It was SO GOOD!  Brandon's best?  Maybe.
I didn't post when I got it cuz, well, I wanted to read it!  I still can't wait for the release tomorrow!  I want to see the missing artwork, especially the map of Roshar.  It was frustrating to have him namedrop all those places and not being able to see how they fit together.  I want to see just how BIG this is.
The typos were annoying, but the big thing that really kicked me out of the book were the occasional notes about the text.  They threw off my groove! (I'm sorry, you've thrown off the Emperor's groove.) *aaaah!*

It's killing me, but I'm taking this one really slow, since I don't know when the next Brandon Sanderson book will be out.  I'm trying to savor the characters and world development a little at a time.  It's like eating an amazing sundae...it's so good you want to eat it all at once, but you know that if you do, it will be gone all too soon (and if you eat it too fast, you might get a brain freeze!)

I just want Brandon to work on these now. Long time Wheel of Time fan and holy crap he needs to stop writing those and finish this series!
I'm extremely inclined to agree with you because I haven't read the WoT.  I've been saying he should work on his own stuff the whole time!

Now you have something to do while you wait for Stormlight Archive #2. ;)

Be warned. Some radical Wheel of Time fans will destroy you if you say this without having read the series ;)

WoT may be hard to get into but if you have the time to read it it's worth reading.

The only things hard about WoT are that #1 is so much like Lord of the Rings, and that you need to find an enormous amount of time to get through them all ;)
