Title: Burning away the curse
Post by: Miyabi on May 28, 2010, 11:18:41 PM

Below you will find a picture of me burning my paperback copy of Warbreaker.  You may wonder why.  Well, let me tell you:

(Note: I still have my hardback #2 copy)

For some reason, when this book was available on the forums and was first being written I didn't read it.  I'm not sure why, I just didn't, and I didn't read following copies.  Last year I went to the release party for Warbreaker and received the #2 copy of the book.  (I only got #2 because Llalimar got #1.)  This was the beginning of the curse.

A while later I printed off the book to read it, because I dislike reading my hardbacks and there wasn't a paperback out yet.  I ruined a printer printing off the book.  Then, I began read the book.  Soon after I got fired from my job, for reasons not my fault and the person who fired me got fired for unfounded firings of multiple people.

I stopped reading for a while and worked with my grandfather doing roofs.  I then started reading again at the beginning of fall semester last year.  Some wires got crossed somewhere and I couldn't get financial aid for school that semester and wasn't able to go to school.

Then I stopped reading it.  Period.  Then, the paperback came out.  I bought a copy and started reading.  My keys disappeared as well as my sister's wedding ring.  Again I stopped reading for a while.  I picked it back up determined to push through to the end.  My dog died.

Today, I finished the cursed book and burned it for all the problems it causes.

One good things did come from these curses though.  I changed schools and majors, which was good.

Oh my.  I hope things turn around for you!

And I hope you haven't just incurred the wrath of the Book Gods.

:( That's actually somewhat painful, to see a burning book. Any book really, but especially a Sanderson.

It better work for you, after going to this extreme.

And couldn't you have burned your printed copy? That I could stomach more easily.

Ummm, Wow.  That was not a good thing.  You don't really believe that a copy of a book can be cursed for any reason other than content do you?

Calm down guys, I still have my hardback copy. xP  This was mostly a joke.  Though everything I said is true.  I do know that it's just a coincidence, but it was really odd.

I don't think the issue is with people thinking you no longer have a copy. The issue is burning a book in the first place. There are close psychological ties between the burning of a book and the act of censorship via elimination. Larger-scale book burnings, throughout the centuries, have been used to eliminate and suppress knowledge. There are no good things associated with burning books.

Honestly, that photo makes me sick.

lol.
Well I push Brandon's books on anyone I can.  So I be not censoring.

You people are too serous.  Too serious indeed.

Am not! I just hate the idea of burning books. Any kind of books, even if it's one I hate. Donate them, sell them, leave them at the bus station, but don't burn them.

Wizard's First Rule was okay. It was shortly after that that the series really went downhill.

Went really downhill also.  Not so far as the ever so Canadian TV series however. :P

Oh man. I watched part of one episode of that before I realized how absolutely awful it was.

I'm a firm believer in getting rid of objects that bring bad luck. I support your actions but I demand the ashes be spread over an ocean.. or something to honor the book that was, even if said book was cursed.

Oh, see, I didn't think the series was so horrible. I mean, yes, it was horrible, no doubt about it, but that's what made it good. ;)

I was kind of sad to see it canceled, even if I didn't watch each new episode as it came out.

It certainly changed but I wouldn't say it went completely downhill.  Faith of the Fallen was probably my favorite book in the series, and it has one of the best wizard rules.

In fact, the wizard rules from those books might be the most amazing thing I have ever gotten out of any books I've ever read.

I agree with Miyabi about how serious this is being taken. Life was sucking, so I support the move, and I will laugh!

But I would never burn a book myself. I just don't have the stomach for it  ;)

Well, for some of us - at least for me - burning a book is tantamount to sacrilege. I'd feel the same if it was Twilight or Sword of Truth he was setting on fire, and I hate those books with a passion.

Wizard's First Rule was  a cheap knockoff of EotW IMO. Actually cheap is too weak of a word to describe how it was knocked off.

That's a pretty good cartoon, Terrisman.  I wonder, if people like that really do think that way, how much money Philip Pullman has earned so far.  Love his books; could never get why people burned them...
Hmmm....

same reason they burned HP--it's so popular that they assume it's part of some underground witchcraft movement:)

AAAAAAAAH I WEEP!

burning books is a saddening practice...But perhaps justified in this instance. I sincerely hope things start to turn up for you, now that the spirit has been exorcised. If things keep going downhill you know you've awakened a book ghost or something.
